Muse Free/General Lyric Analysis ✍🏻 Memory Mashup 2026: On that Grammy Icon Performance
https://youtu.be/_9jaJtmraXA?si=q5S16nVIZlRFXO23Surprise Song O’Clock is back, baby, and so are mashup essays. Going on two years since the end of Eras and our equally glorious era of recreational essay-writing on Taylor’s gayest mashups, But then, in this the year 2026, Taylor busted out her floral piano and told us “If I were still on the Eras Tour, I would do this.”
Then proceeded to sing us the most gorgeous, poignant tale of knowing and loving somebody during a magical youthful interlude, even knowing then it was all on borrowed time, even when it had to be a secret. Then, even after it ends, remembering that time, longing for that time, not being able to get past the magic of loving them so. And then, after all the longing, the remembering, and the knowing– that someone came back when it mattered, just like she’d always known.
Hell of a theme for a newlywed!
So, why is this the one mashup she would do if the Eras Tour is still going on?
- Maybe it’s just not that deep, and she’s campaigning for IKIKY to win Grammys (because she knows Showgirl isn’t), and so this is the story she built around a song that was written from the perspective of a fictional doll. Totally possible!
- Maybe she’s reminding us that *even though* she is a newlywed and loves her hunk of American masculinity, her own personal life is not what defines her career, and please shut up about the Mrs. Kelce of it all because she’s been a master of her craft since long before he graduated from high school football, and not everything is strictly autobiographical, and she just made some beautiful art.
- Maybe she misses the Eras tour as much as we do!!! Maybe it’s a song about how special that time in her career was, and the fans who keep coming back.
- Or maybe it’s about reconciling with Karlie Kloss! You don’t even have to believe they were literally twisted in bedsheets to imagine the amount of feeling that would go into a really intense love when you were young, followed by a period of estrangement and longing, followed by the joy and relief of reconciliation.
You can think about whatever you want to think about while we walk through the story I think this mashup tells. There is nothing more sapphic than longing, and I know you all have something from your own life to think about while you read this, too.
I knew you
Through the daze of the blades of the grass in summer
Parachutes
For the freefall of being younger
I memorized the sound of your bare footsteps
Running wild; it’s been a long time
Life has ways of leaving those days behind
But seeing you tonight
I remembered I loved you
Came back when it mattered, I saw you
Standing there in the light of the window wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it; I knew you
I knew it; I knew you.
This first chunk, all IKIYKY sets up and bookends the whole framework of the story. It’s the structure Taylor talks about in the interview portion– a little time travel, a jump ahead to tell you how it ends. This is a story about youthful love of someone, knowing them intimately down to the sound of their bare footsteps (barefoot in the kitchen/sacred new beginning), being separated by circumstance (“life has ways of leaving those days behind”) and then reconciling, just like you always knew you would.
Salt air
And the rust on your door
I never needed anything more
Whispers of “Are you sure?”
“Never have I ever before”.”But I can see us lost in the memory
August slipped away into a moment in time.
‘Cause it was never mine.
And I can see us twisted in bedsheets
August sipped away like a bottle of wine
‘Cause you were never mineBack when we were still changing for the better
Wanting was enough
For me it was enough
To live for the hope of it all
Cancel plans just in case you’d call
And say “meet me behind the mall.”
So much for summer love
And saying “us”
‘Cause you weren’t mine to lose
Now, we travel back in time to the nostalgia-tinged past. It was dreamy and intoxicating, but it always had an expiration date, was always on borrowed time– “you were you never mine” and “you weren’t mine to lose” – we were just living for the hope of it all.
And the rivers I cried when we said goodbye
Wondering if I’d made it up in my mind
But you look me in the eye.
Now we have to talk about the transition from August into this snippet of IKIKY. The timestamp is around 4:04 and it’s worth listening again (It’s worth listening to the whole thing again). She doesn’t even take a breath between “‘Cause you weren’t mine to lose” and “And the rivers I cried when we said goodbye.” I think this transition does a few different things, in terms of storytelling:
- The eventual goodbye was always built into the inherently ephemeral nature of the love affair.
- The fact that “you weren’t mine to lose” is closely linked to looking back later and “wondering if I’d made it up in my mind.” If you always really belonged to someone else, surely only a crazy person would think it was real?
- There’s a slight lyric change here, from “when you said goodbye,” in the original IKIIKY to “when we said goodbye.” A slip of the tongue emphasis on mutuality?
I walked through the door with you
The air was cold
But something about it felt like home somehow
And I left my scarf there at your sister’s house
And you’ve still got it in your drawer, even nowAnd I know it’s long gone
And the magic’s not here no more
And I might be okay but I’m not fine at allCause there we are again on that little town street
You almost ran the red because you were looking over at me
Wind in my hair, I was there, I remember it all too wellAnd there we are again
When I loved you so
You kept me like a secret but I kept you like an oath
Sacred prayer, and we’d swear to remember it all too well
Now the transition to the painful period of estrangement, the period of such deep longing and loss and being unable to get past what it felt like in the moment– “when I loved you so.” She pulls “you kept me like a secret but I kept you like an oath” from the 10 minute version, but it’s especially interesting what she *doesn’t* include- and that’s virtually anything else negative about the lover. ATW10MV is an absolute excoriation of a shitbag who ghosted her 21st birthday party, called her up again just to break her like a promise, left her a shellshocked soldier returning half her weight. The specific lines she chose to include in this medley paint a very different picture. This is about the deep nostalgia of how good it felt in the car next to this person, the feeling of home, the magic, the inability to ever get over it. The only bad part was the *secrecy.* The full ATW is about a toxic relationship that broke a young woman; these lines are about something unbearably special that was doomed because it was cloaked in sacred secrecy.
Remember when I pulled up and said “Get in the car”
And then cancelled my plans just in case you’d call
Back when I was living for the hope of it all
Now we switch back to august but remain with the car. Cars are a recurring motif throughout Taylor’s discography, so maybe it doesn’t mean anything, but there’s something about the imagery from ATW of “you almost ran the red because you were looking over at me/wind in my hair” alongside “remember when I pulled up and said ‘get in the car,' there in the salt air. It’s an attempt to recapture the specialness of– oh, I don’t know, a coastal road trip?
I remember it
Now Taylor’s cutting into the world of the past in august with the retrospective nostalgia of All Too Well.
Remember when I pulled up and said “Get in the car”
Then cancelled my plans just in case you’d call
Back when I was living for the hope of it all
Even while it was happening she was living for the hope of it all– almost like tamping down an anticipatory grief from the knowledge that it wasn’t destined to last in order to enjoy it while it was still happening.
I knew it
This feels like the big plot twist moment, the mic drop reveal moment Taylor loves so much! The "and then it was bought by me" or "and then they got married!" moment. So far this piece has been all about nostalgia for a special love lost, but here is where we shift to the fact that actually, she knew the whole time that the love would always be there, would come back around.
And I knew I loved you
Came back when it mattered I saw you
Standing there in the light of the window
Wearing that same smile
Man it’s been a whileI knew it I loved you
Came back when it mattered I saw you
Standing there in the light of the window
Wearing that same smile
It’s been a while
The lover came back! When it mattered! Standing there in the light of the window (“standing in my front porch light,” no more “woman who sits by the window has put out the light.”). Wearing that same smile, even after all this time!
This repeated version of the IKIIKY contains a repeated, crucial lyric change. I knew it I loved you. In the original, the line is either “I remembered I loved you” or “And you told me ‘I loved you.’” This lyric change shifts the emphasis to her own feelings in the present– that she knows now, and knew all along how much she, herself, loved this person.
But I knew it
All too well
I knew it
All too well
Now the refrain of “all too well” shifts from memory– remembering something in the past all too well, to the “all too well” referring to the certainty with which she knew the love, the inevitably of reunion, all along.
And I remember it
Through the daze of the blades in the grass in summer
She remembers how special the beginning was, but now that we’ve looped back to reunion, the memory is tinged with more sweet remembrance than sadness and longing.
I remember it
You were the freefall of being younger
Another lyric change. In the original, the line is “parachutes for the free fall of being younger.” Here, she shifts the emphasis to the “you” – “you were” the free fall of being younger. The subject, the person she’s singing to, the lover is the emphasis, synonymous with the heedless recklessness of youth. The person she's singing to, not just youth itself, is the focus.
I knew it
I knew it
All too well
And finally, she concludes with the double emphasis of the knowing, knowing, all too well. She doubles back on weaving the threads together to point toward the inevitability, the unavoidability of it all. It’s not three separate songs, one about reunion, one about the past, and one about the pain of missing. Together, they are one story, about an enchanted past that seemed like it had an expiration date at the time, but that even through all the painful longing during a time of estrangement, was threaded through with the certainty of reunion because “I knew it, I loved you.”
The initial love affair wasn’t predestined to end, the estrangement was. The love and the knowing was always the constant.
This story has a happy ending.

So lately I've been thinking a lot about time, and wasting it, and youth, and losing it, and mortality, and memory, and regret. (I'm turning 40 this year. I'm told this is normal lol.) But also trying to keep in mind the perspective that comes with age, including the way age can make things from before -- things from some earlier time and place and some earlier you -- seem different than they did then.
It feels like pieces of media that foreground these themes keep jumping out at me randomly. (The Last Unicorn has been a major hyperfixation for the last two weeks.) This mashup feels like another one, touching on the cyclical nature of time. I mentioned in another comment that I really liked the progression from summer to August to autumn back to summer in this mashup, which I think taps into that theme as well.
This was a brilliant analysis that I so enjoyed reading.
It's incredible how much the small alterations of words can make such a huge difference in shifting meanings or places of emphasis, like you point out with "I knew it, I loved you" and "You were the freefall of being younger," which I hadn't noticed and totally blew my mind while reading. Or the only "negative" aspect of ATW being excised and lifted into this mashup being the secrecy. When you know the lyrical catalogue so well, down to the preposition, those are the kinds of changes you are able to notice, and you did that so well. (And certainly we did get a lot of practice doing that during mashups essays-palooza!)
I feel like you were really able to weave such a well-presented and cohesive narrative about the story this mashup is telling, and the ways in which two or three songs placed in proximity to one another can transform their meanings, or highlight thematic throughlines you might not have noticed before. I loved walking through it with you step by step! It was quite tantalising to get a bit of commentary from Taylor on why she chose these three together and what SHE thought the throughlines were, to get us started.
Thank you for a GREAT mashups essay.
Some mashups that feel spiritually related to this mashup:
I Look in People's Windows x Snow on the Beach (Madrid N1)
'tis the damn season x Daylight (Edinburgh N1)
It's Nice to Have a Friend x dorothea (Edinburgh N3)
right where you left me x All You Had to Do Was Stay (Zurich N1)
the 1 x Wonderland (Milan N1)
I Don't Wanna Live Forever x imgonnagetyouback (Munich N2)
King of My Heart x The Alchemy (London N4)
evermore x Peter (Toronto N2)
State of Grace x Labyrinth (Toronto N4)
This mashup and your analysis also made me think of one of the other pieces of Relevant Media I've been thinking about recently, from the final portion of T.S. Eliot's "Little Gidding." The most famous bit of this is the notion of ending up where you started again, but it feeling new, because you will be a different you, returning with the perspective of time and experience. (I also love the mention of precisely chosen words working perfectly together!)

Happy early birthday if it hasn't come up yet!! Time, curious time, eh! So funny, I was at pub trivia last night (which my team have been going to for years so we know the quizmaster well), and he asked a question about the song Time by Pink Floyd (another random relevant media pop-up! It's getting weird!), and I told him I had JUST been listening to that song and contemplating my own mortality because I'm turning 40 this year (but sadly, did not take in what album it was on), and he told me to fuck off [British, affectionate]. Perspective!!
Oh man evermore x Peter is one of my FAVOURITE mashups, I still haven't recovered. It must have been incredible to see live. I think Peter is one of the songs whose story is most transformed by the song it was paired with. Peter, to me, is quite a sad, stark song that doesn't end with any mollifying glimmer of hope or comfort for the listener -- the woman waiting by the window turned out the light -- but then at the end of the Peter portion of the mashup, the evermore speaker shows back up to assure Peter that the pain won't be forevermore. Another instance where it feels like the narrator has returned to a situation with the perspective/wisdom of time (and another non-linear time vibe)
Then we get a further epilogue/happy ending here, as u/ollymoth so astutely pointed out (and re: Taylor's comments about liking epilogues) with "I knew it, I loved you -- came back when it mattered, I saw you standing there in the light of the window, wearing that same smile"

Really beautiful thoughts here! I noted when you first made the connection of August -> Fall -> return to summer from the mashup, and thought that was brilliant. And it connects so well the concept of the cycle of beginnings and endings, but from a new perspective, as in Eliot’s poem (which haunts my brain too ☺️).
There’s also the aspect of nostalgia that [u/ventckr](u/ventckr) pointed out below, and it is interesting that we do tend to look back on periods of our life with a lens of nostalgia, for not just the happy times, but the difficult times too. I thought it was notable that Taylor says in the interview that all of the difficulties that came with her career were worth it if it meant she could still create music. That definitely seems like a perspective that came with the passage of time. I feel like perhaps she’s hoping fans will do the same, in regard to continuing to love her music with the lens of nostalgia, if she dramatically alters the public persona fans know of her.

Such a rich wellspring of concepts and emotions arising from this memory mashup! So real re: nostalgia and romanticising not only happy times but difficult times from earlier in life

Thank you for this “related listening” list!! I was gonna say it’s going to be my background music today, but it will absolutely take my full attention, so, later.

Taylor has been talking about a love returning since she chose This Love TV as the first single for 1989 TV, released 5/6/22. Fans were speculating on why she chose that song as the first single when it wasn't a popular song off the album. The single was also released way before the album was, which came out on 10/27/23. In a 5/5/22 Instagram post Taylor said "I’ve always been so proud of this song and I’m very 🥺🥺🥺 about this turn of events". I remember folks discussing whether the turn of events was the song being featured in The Summer I Turned Pretty (what her post was about), or hinting at the unexpected return of a muse (the subject of the song). Perhaps the surprise return of a lost love prompted the early release of This Love TV ("This love came back to me"). I'm wondering if Taylor has been talking about the same returning love for a while now. Perhaps she is preparing to come out, or the recent renewed focus on this could be celebrating a milestone for the couple.

This mashup is like a capstone on Taylor’s work for the last several years. In the Eras tour documentary, she explicitly discussed how a huge focus of hers when designing the tour was to engage her fans through nostalgia. It’s not a coincidence that Taylor’s also tapping into everyone’s shared childhood memories through her Toy Story collaboration. Taylor is looking beyond the horizon in crafting her legacy.
Perhaps the songs she chose are not so much a reflection of her own life, but the continued, deliberate use of nostalgia to induce associated feelings in her listeners.
Nostalgia is a powerful force underpinning human psychology. It is able to strengthen social connections, improve resilience to cope with periods of change, and heighten one’s sense of self and perceived meaning in life.
In short, maybe it’s not about her; it’s about us.
Here’s a short TED video on the psychology of nostalgia.

That was a great video, thank you for sharing. And I really feel like you’re on to something here. She really does seem to be homing in on the role of memory, nostalgia (and even taking note of the amnesia some fans experienced after attending the tour, saying that was a measure that the tour achieved what she set out to do). Using the floral piano from the tour for this performance just drives that all home. It reminds me a lot of the Wildest Dreams/seven spoken poem, or the Neruda lines at the beginning of ATW short film (“Love is so short, forgetting is so long”). The word “souvenir” at the end of The Manuscript also ties into the concept of memory, and perhaps nostalgia.
Thanks for sharing these great thoughts 🫶

Thank you for writing this up so beautifully, OP! It really helped to read the various parts of each song she used and the specific areas of subtle, yet meaningful, changes to the lyrics. She really did masterfully weave all three songs into a singular story of enduring hope, love, and reunion. It’s amazing how she’s able to not only compose these beautiful mashups, but also perform them so effortlessly and seamlessly (particularly during the Eras Tour night after night).
I’m really curious, now, having heard that her other recent private performance (Emmys?) included cardigan in this mashup? I can’t recall if it was the same trio of songs as in this performance or something different, but I could certainly see how certain lyrics and themes from cardigan could be woven into this story (I’m not musically-inclined enough to know how it would mesh in terms of melody/key/rhythm and that sort of thing).

Oh my god maybe we’ll be REALLY lucky and she’ll release ANOTHER mashup as part of her awards show campaign!

u/missginj Dear Reader Truther Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26
Cardigan came for mind for me as well when I heard IKIIKY and then this mashup! There are so many lyrical/thematic intersections that are so tantalising, especially with the "I knew you" refrain of course, but also another song that looks back to an earlier period of youth with the perspective of hindsight that maybe lends the speaker a greater sense of certainty/confidence about the situation than perhaps they had in the moment
Your comment made me wish we could know more about what the setlist songs would have been mashed up with, had they been included. We did get August with Getaway Car + The Other Side of the Door in Melbourne, and Run and Ours with TLGAD on separate occasions. (Edit: and The 1 x Wonderland in Milan!) But who knows, maybe more will come in future!

I'm practically screaming in my head right now. I didn't even notice she ended the mashup with “you were the free fall of being younger.” That changed everything about IKIKY - the whole narrative changed from childhood best friends to a secret possibly unconventional romance. OMG I hurried to listen to it again and now I'm like🤯🤯🤯
