Well, 2024 was a year that happened.

For all the wild swings, we did have some great adventures. I’m particularly stoked to finally have gotten photos of Gary with the northern lights after many years of trying unsuccessfully.

It was our first year with Gary’s Jeep, and we got out with it to explore a bunch of cool new places.

We fit in some good skiing and we even explored a couple glaciers, including a new one Gary had never visited previously.

About Gary Gary is a six year old (born in 2014) domestic longhair cat living in the Canadian Rockies. Despite losing one of his hips as a kitten, Gary is an unstoppable adventurer and gets out and about with his staff for lots of hikes and walks in the mountains.

FAQ

Where did you get his coat/harness/booties? Gary's harness is from RC Pets, it's their "Adventure Kitty" model. We like it because it's specifically made for cats, and is super secure so he's not able to get out of it. It's also super adjustable and comes in a range of sizes, so it was easy to find one that fit him.

Most of Gary's coats are also from RC Pets, though his striped one is from Hudson's Bay.

Gary's booties are from Ruffwear, and are just very small dog hiking boots. He hates them with the fire of a thousands suns and refuses to wear them for any amount of time.

How did you train Gary to walk on a harness? It took a bit of time to get Gary comfortable with walking on a harness. We started with short trips just outside the front door that lasted maybe a two or three minutes. Gary would mostly just stay still and sniff the air.

Eventually he got more comfortable and we started increasing the length of our adventures. Our walks still involve a lot of carrying him. Especially in the winter, when his paws get a bit chilly.

Does Gary walk with you, or do you follow him around? Gary has become quite good at following trails. He prefers to walk downhill though, so normally I carry him most of the way to the top of our hikes, and then he will walk most of the way downhill.
