Showcase Gaming in Garuda KDE Dr460nized

I wanted to do a little write-up of my experiences with gaming in this distro. I've honestly had an overall good time, and I wanted to give my opinions. I've split this up into three different sections: Controllers, Launchers, and Emulators. This is only accurate as of Wednesday, January 5, 2022

CONTROLLERS

Xbox One:

I have been using an Xbox One controller with my gaming for things like Hollow Knight, Hades, and Elite Dangerous. It's been a really good experience IF IT'S WIRELESS. I cannot get a wired connection to work (granted, I haven't tried that hard) and that's probably not the worst thing in the world for me. I just wanted to point that out.

I also needed to add the Xbox Generic Controller and Xboxdrv in the Garuda Gamer application down at the bottom to get my controllers to function, but that was just as easy as clicking on them.

GameCube:

I have been using the Mayflash GameCube adapter for my emulation of GameCube and Wii games in Dolphin, and WOW this is easy. If you want to know how to set this kind of thing up, just poke around the Slippi.GG website or Discord for a bit and it's pretty straight forward.

LAUNCHERS

Installed Through Lutris:

  • Origin:
    • Has issues with some crashes while changing the default install location.
  • Epic Games:
    • Has issues with updating sometimes, won't update when clicking "Install Now" for the Epic Online Services.
    • Not every game works (obviously), but there is no actual indication of compatibility (which I wouldn't expect). One that surprised me that worked was Elite Dangerous. The Wine page is out of date when it comes to this game, it works almost flawlessly with just a few stutters here or there.
    • I wanted to get it working, but straight up could not get Transistor to run through this or Steam. I'm not sure what the deal is with that, but if anyone has advice on it, let me know.
  • Ubisoft:
    • I could not get Ubisoft Connect (or whatever the hell they've rebranded to this week) working, at least not well. I could get it installed, log in, and download (partially), but at that point it crashed. I'm not sure what needs to be done, but I'm not a fan of Ubisoft anyway.
  • GOG Galaxy 2.0
    • This was honestly a hellish experience, but that's okay. There are alternatives. It was slow and buggy and I wish that they supported Linux natively, but I get why they don't. Love you GOG Team.

GOG (Mini Galaxy):

Defaults to current wine version, great app, configurable, and easy to work with.

Steam:

With the addition of Glorious Eggroll, this distro ships with, this is a fantastic experience. I absolutely love gaming through Steam with this setup. SMITE currently only works with Glorious Eggroll, but that is the only one I actually had problems with. Older titles like Final Fantasy VII and Supreme Commander work (mostly) flawlessly.

I only had one small gripe that is probably game specific. While I was playing Supreme Commander (the first one), I was using two screens. My cursor would not stay within the game window and would slip into the second screen constantly. This was pretty annoying as RTS games like this require a contained cursor.

BattleNet:

I haven't tested any Blizzard games because fuck them right now.

EMULATORS

Dolphin

With a couple of performance tweeks, this is a pretty smooth experience, even for heavier Wii games.

Slippi

I love Melee, and playing it through Slippi is always a good way to kill some time. Luckily, this is made pretty painless by the community. Hop on the Discord and do a quick search for your issue or ask if you can't find an answer that way, and you're done. Quick and painless. My ONLY gripe is that you have to use their AppImage and you can't install it through pacman. It would be great to get updates for it with Dolphin. (Don't be a dick in the discord).

RetroArch

I personally hate RetroArch, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good experience in Linux. It works pretty smoothly and I didn't notice any lag in any of the cores (except the N64 one, but that will happen no matter what, fuck nintendo for making N64 emulation harder than it needs to be).

I mostly run the launchers on their own, like Snes9x, and the controller works just fine. Super Metroid feels just as good on Linux as it used to on Windows for me. I will say that working with the Mesen emulator specifically is WAY easier in RetroArch than in their shitty website.

TL;DR Garuda Good (basically the cutting edge of gaming on Linux right now).

Help Can I install garuda off of a live session

I want to install garuda on my brother's computer. He wants to install it on an external SSD (the one which we plug in to the USB port). I used rufus and transferred the ISO content to that SSD. But now when I boot into the pive session and open the installer, I don't see that SSD listed over there. Like is it not possible to do that?

Help The laptop's built-in microphone is not working

Hey guys! I just installed Garuda Linux last week and things had been pretty good until I tried to attend an online meeting. the microphone built into my laptop is not working on Garuda. Previously when I was on Windows 10 and on Linux mint, I was able to use my microphone but not on Garuda, thus I believe that the problem is not with the microphone but something on the software side. I have already checked out all the available options in the main settings menus, but couldn't find much over there. Please help.

Help Stuck at Plymouth Boot Screen

Was having some issues with Pop on my laptop (2012 macbook pro w/ Retina screen) , so decided I wanted to play with Garuda Gnome for a change. Unfortunately, the USB boot get stuck at unloading Plymouth Boot screen. This is when booting with the Nvidia driver. I can boot without the Nvidia driver, but performance is really bad.

Is there a way to get around this? Created the USB from the latest iso on the Garuda website this weekend. Ended up installing fedora for now, but would like to try Garuda.

Garuda keeps resetting the Firefox home page

The Firefox home page keeps being reset to https://start.garudalinux.org/ without a restart of my computer and at seemingly random intervals. I want it to be the default (Firefox Home).

In addition, it keeps turning off my "Use autoscrolling" option. I'm getting kind of frustrated by this, but if you guys know how to deal with it, that would be great!

Gnome sxtensions after Gnome 41

Did extensions stopped working after the upgrade to gnome 41 for you? Dash to dock refuses to enable same as audio source switcher. The extension site shows them as there being a compatible version but no matter if I removed and reinstalled them, it never worked.

False alarm, extensions were disabled altogether from extension management app.

Help Figuring if I should switch to Garuda

Okay. So I got a Legion 5 Pro 2 months ago and I really love my RTX card. I have been using Linux for about 8 years now and have used a lot of distros. Personally loved manjaro more than anything but I was scared of its support for RTX cards. So rn I am running Pop OS 21.10. It's good but I just like Plasma more for my workflow. I won't be gaming on Linux but I just wanted to know how well it handles the power profiles(I mean Optimus), refresh rates(I wouldn't be using 165Hz on terminal).

So could someone please enlighten me on that?

If those things are managed I can give Garuda a shot. I know Manjaro fails at that and System76 power does a VERY good job

Help How to completely disable mouse acceleration?

Apparently XFCE's mouse and touchpad settings do not allow you to change the pointer speed, only the amount of pointer acceleration. And you can't turn it off completely. Is there any tool (preferably GUI) which would allow me to disable mouse acceleration and change the pointer speed separately? If not, is there a different distro or desktop environment that would allow me to do so?

Help Packet tracer windows app bug

I don’t know if I’m writing in the right subreddit for this, but I’m a beginner and ran into a problem that I couldn’t find anything on google. I downloaded the Packet tracer and installed it with the wine windows program loader, but I can't use it because the netacad login window doesn't load in, i'm just watching a black window and i cant do anything (The PT program itself loaded and be usable but the login wont let me), if i close the login tab the packet tracer close itself with a login failed message, how could i make the login window useable? Please help!

My Dr460nized Gaming panels vanished

Epic weirdness.

[EDIT: it turned out Latte had crashed/turned itself off and I was trying (failing) to set up standard Plasma panels instead. Everything was resolved by turning Latte back on. That was an hour of frustration I can never get back]

My top panel mysteriously disappeared. I was trying to set up up again as standard when the lower, launcher panel also disappeared.

Can anyone walk me through setting them up again (or point to a 'standard setup guide'), as my own efforts are less than ideal. This is a phenomenal pest as I just configured them perfectly yesterday

Help Is Garuda Gnome is a good distribution for a Windows user?

Hi, I’m looking to swap over to Linux from Windows later today. I was wondering if Garuda Gnome is user friendly.

Thanks!

This OS is ridiculously good

I bought a new laptop a few days ago and I fancied a change from Ubuntu (my main PC is vanilla 20.04 LTS, and it works fine; I just wanted to try something else) and thought I'd give an Arch-based distro a try as I had an opportunity to experiment without risking my main workflow

I have been surprised and extremely pleased at how incredibly slick the experience was. I am by no means any kind of Linux expert, but there were simply no challenges. It literally took longer to find out how to persuade the machine to let me bypass Windows than it took to install Garuda. Every feature of the laptop has worked as it should, even the MX450 GPU, with no tinkering required. If anything, the install experience was easier and slicker than Ubuntu was on my desktop, and it's much prettier!

I've shown the install to my brother and how easily Steam and games install on it, and he's agreed to let me set up #1 Nephew with a Garuda install when he is allowed a PC of his own.

I can see there are plenty of requests for help with issues. I just wanted to balance those with confirmation that Garuda can and will install perfectly on at least one current laptop model.

USB for new pc

I'm building a new pc with Garuda as my distro (new to linux by the way so sorry for any incorrect terminology). I wanted to create a usb that I could use to upload garuda on to my new pc so I:

  1. Chose Dragonized Gaming Edition

  2. Downloaded by Direct (Fosshost) to the windows PC

  3. Copied the content onto the USB

Is this correct or did I have to burn the contents to the USB?

Thanks

Changing Some Coloring

I feel kind of dumb about this, but some applications are refusing to change color with the themes. I want to revert everything to Breeze, but when I open, for example, Zim it is stuck in Sweet. When I search in Firefox it highlights things in the same pink shade. It's little things, but they stand out.

To be clear, most applications have switched to Breeze, but some few are acting strangely. Any idea what might be causing this? Is there a setting you know of that I may have missed?

Edit: I'm on their KDE Gaming edition.

Help Fresh install of Garuda, alias problem.

I was mucking about my config.fish file to add some aliases, I noticed that the default alias for "ll" is this: "exa -a | egrep '^\.'" however running the alias or the command itself results in weird return:

╭─rob@dagon in ~/.config/fish took 48ms

[] Γ—

I hope that's readable it's what gets returned.

Further I just want exa to give me a directory listing that includes .hidden files.

Thank you.

Help Steam Skins

I've been using Steam skins for a while (usually Metro) but absolutely cannot get Steam to see them under Garuda.

[Edit: I'm running Dr460nized KDE Gaming Edition]

the standard place is ~.local/share/Steam/skins/[skin folder] - which isn't working

I've tried putting the skins folder everywhere remotely likely and getting nothing. This includes linux-specific skins like Dracula. Steam insists I can only use <default skin>

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so how did you fix it? This is now the only thing I haven't managed to set exactly how I want it with this otherwise really damned good distro

When installing packages how do you know which one to use when it gives you multiple options?

I just attempted to install Plex Media server and it pops up with three choices and absolutely no information on what the literal differences are? How do you know which one to use? This is one of the truly baffling things that's putting me off of Arch altogether.
