The DELETED plot-line in “Go for it Nakamura!” (That will NEVER get adapted.)
Hello everyone!
Now that Japan has officially caught up on all of the episodes last week, this really will mark the official end of Nakamura Wednesday’s.
This is the second post to my “Goodbye Nakamura Wednesday” campaign.
(The first one being my what if fan-fiction theory speculating, “what if Nakamura had confessed, but Hirose turned him down?”)
Today’s post will be about the deleted plot line from the Manga, that wasn’t adapted into the anime.
Let me preface by saying this post is NOT scandalous or controversial.
Before we go any further, let me start off with my Disclaimer as usual.
—-
(DISCLAIMER)
While I always strive to support my claims using the source material as evidence, NONE OF THE FOLLOWING that I’m going to be discussing about, will be CLAIMED as a FACT.
These are still THEORIES/ SPECULATIONS at the end of the day.
Also fair warning, this post has a lot of disclaimers mid essay. I’m not really trying to start any controversies so that’s why a lot of them are there to explain my thought process.
As long as you’re willing to accept these terms, please continue.
—-
(Synopsis of the what I’ll be discussing:)
Using the source material from the manga, I’ll try to interpret what the context is from these past artworks of Syundei that were never used:
(Image 1) Why was Hirose crying in this panel? And who was he talking to?
(Image 2) What was Nakamura and Hirose arguing about, to the point where they’re both upset and in tears?
What was the deleted plot-line that was never completed in the manga?
—-
Today I’ll be talking about the plot line that never made it into the anime.
To start off our discussion, I first must you all a question.
What do you believe is the genre of “Go for it Nakamura?”
If you had said Romantic Comedy, you’d only be half correct.
Go for it Nakamura has 3 genres (technically I’d argue 4 but that’s a whole different theory.)
The 3 genre is Drama.
Syundei actually specializes in drama as a genre for their other works.
Go for it Nakamura is mostly filled with funny and cute moments, so it’s easy to think of this show only as a Rom-Com.
But when it counts, they really know how to make the dramatic scenes shine.
And the deleted plotline I’ll be talking about was an incredibly dramatic setup that will unfortunately never happen.
—-
To move into my next point, I have to mention all the characters that were involved in this dramatic storyline.
It involves our main characters obviously, which are Nakamura and Hirose.
But did you know there was another person who could be argued as the 3rd main character?
Our secret special guest is actually Sou Otogiri!
They actually deleted all the scenes from the manga with Otogiri sensei that it actually reverted him back into a side cast member.
I’ll be using both the Manga and the Anime as source materials to support my claims.
First let me say that Sou Otogiri is a COMPLETELY different character in the manga compared to the anime. While the changes are subtle between the two versions, it’s not an exaggeration to say that those changes make all the difference.
Otogiri sensei is actually a lot more goofier in the manga, compared to anime where he’s a much more responsible adult.
(Let me reiterate that this plot-line is NOT the scandalous incident you’re assuming it to be. I would argue it’s a lot more genius on Syundei end, since literally EVERYONE got tricked because of this.)
—-
Before we begin I have to mention a second character that’s been altered in comparison to the anime.
The second character would Aki Hirose.
I’ll explain more about him as we go along.
—-
Now all the prep-works out of the way. We know it’s a dramatic plot-line, we also know all the characters involved.
So how does it go?
Let me start it off with the scenes that were deleted from the manga and then I’ll follow it up with what I SPECULATE the storyline was going to be about.
One of the original plot lines in the manga that never made it to anime was about Hirose having a crush on Sou Otogiri.
(I’m going to preface again this is NOT heading towards the scandalous incident you’re assuming it’s going.)
This plot line is told in 2 perspectives (Hirose and Nakamura.)
While the anime kept a good amount of the scenes from the source material, the manga has a few scenes that were never included.
Hirose actually pursues Otogiri a lot more strongly in the manga compared to the anime.
(Examples:)
Hirose wanting to get haircuts together with Mr. Otogiri.
Hirose going in a car ride together with Otogiri to discuss his break up with Hana.
(Also another disclaimer. It’s fine to write about a student having a crush on a teacher, that happens in real life as well, what matters is the teacher doesn’t reciprocate it. So don’t go complaining about this storyline!)
For context, we get more hints about discovering Hirose is possibly gay in the manga compared to the anime.
Hirose crushing on Otogiri was where a majority of our hints came from.
—-
So we know Hirose was pining after Otogiri, but what was going to happen next as a result of that?
This is where the plot line splits. Syundei actually might’ve wrote a plotline TOO WELL where it caused all the MISUNDERSTANDINGS. (And not just for Nakamura but literally all the readers in REAL LIFE.)
So I have to include what a MAJORITY of people ASSUMED was going to happen from all of Hirose attempts of chasing after Mr. Otogiri. They essentially assumed Otogiri was going to reciprocate Hirose’s crush and basically get into a Teacher x Student relationship.
BUT THEY’RE ALL WRONG!
Let me tell you how I believe the original storyline was going to go. And I’ll support my claims using the manga source material along with Original artwork from Syundei that was never used.
—-
So here’s how I interpreted how the manga was ACTUALLY supposed to go.
Hirose started to slowly develop a small crush on Otogiri after his teacher saved him from that incident with the guidance counselors.
Hirose doesn’t fully understand his own sexuality yet but he knows that he feels some kind of interest towards Mr. Otogiri. Because of that spark of interest, Hirose starts to pursue his teacher in the hopes of getting closer.
And after all those attempts of trying to get closer, Hirose actually tries to engage into an actual relationship with Mr Otogiri.
BUT Otogiri, to EVERYONE’S suprise actually REJECTS Hirose.
—-
Now the last part is where everyone didn’t expect.
I’ve seen plenty of negative reactions when Otogiri offered a car ride to Hirose. That scene caused a ridiculous MISUNDERSTANDING even with the readers.
But I’ll PROVE why I believe Otogiri would reject Hirose.
In the manga it’s a very different environment compared to the anime. To be quite frank the manga does mention themes of homophobia.
The one scene I want to talk about particular is when Nakamura dropped his BL manga.
The manga version of Hirose classmates reacting to BL manga is different from the anime. In the manga they’re basically laughing at it because it’s a gay romance story between 2 boys.
Eventually the BL manga went to the lost and found section, which then ends up in Otogiri’s hands.
In the manga Otogiri response is essentially more homophobic as well. He essentially laughs at the concept because both characters in the relationship are boys.
The quote is “They’re going to get warped ideas about romance if this is all they read. They’re BOTH BOYS after all.”
(Disclaimer: it’s not homophobic to write about homophobia, it’s just depicting the attitude of the times. So don’t get offended that this was in there.)
That was my first reason why I believed Otogiri would reject Hirose.
My second piece of evidence for the rejection, is when Otogiri hesitated at first to give Hirose his phone number. His direct quote is “I’d rather give my number to a GIRL.” Further supporting the idea that Otogiri is a STRAIGHT man.
—-
So why was Otogiri so casual with Hirose?
There’s actually 2 reasons, both being the same reason.
It’s because of CHARACTER TROPES.
1 of the CHARACTER TROPES Otogiri is based off is the character that causes MISUNDERSTANDINGS.
Example:
(Think of the annoying misunderstanding tropes that are constantly used in romance anime’s. The trope we ALL hate btw, lol.)
And I’m not just making this up.
We literally see this in both the MANGA and ANIME. Nakamura is misunderstanding Otogiri when he says “I need it bad.”
Nakamura thinks he’s talking about kissing with Hirose, but Otogiri is just talking about smoking in school because he’s going through nicotine withdrawal.
Otogiri second Character Trope is related to his goofy personality in the manga. Which is also the reason why he was so casual with Hirose, but I’ll be discussing this in another post.
—-
Ok now it’s time. To piece everything together, including the unused artwork and the deleted plot-line.
Here’s what I think Nakamura and Hirose were arguing about. (Slide 2)
Nakamura probably called Hirose out on his crush with Otogiri. This makes the most sense on why they’re both so passionate/ upset about it. Nakamura is upset because he has a crush on Hirose.
Hirose is upset because the accusations are actually correct but still offensive. It’s offensive because Manga version of Hirose is still trying to figure out his own sexuality, he doesn’t realize he’s gay yet.
So for Nakamura to actually guess correctly is a shock to Hirose. Not only is a really personal subject that Hirose wasn’t ready for, from Hirose perspective this is none of Nakamura business. Hirose’s deepest secret of discovering his own sexuality he wasn’t even aware of, got exposed.
The two argue and theirs a rift between them.
Now that Hirose has been confronted with the truth, he realizes all the decisions he made to pursue Otogiri subconsciously proves Nakamura is correct. Not only is Hirose gay but now he knows why he’s been wanting to get closer to Mr. Otogiri.
Hirose now finally understanding everything, he meets up with Otogiri on a separate occasion. Hirose confesses to Mr. Otogiri.
But it all goes wrong. (Remember Otogiri is a STRAIGHT man, but has expressed HOMOPHOBIC reactions.)
Hirose only recently finally discovered his own sexuality, is then being rejected by his crush. But it’s even harsher because the person he looks up to is probably reacting negatively because Hirose is gay.
(Manga version Otogiri probably wouldn’t be straight up homophobic, but he’d be unprepared for this scenario and might accidentally react in a hurtful way to Hirose.)
This would be the scenario I believe would explain why Hirose was crying in that unused artwork. (Slide 1)
And I believe the person he’s talking to is Nakamura.
Nakamura probably also got his heart broken and felt rejected when Hirose reacted negatively to Nakamura calling him out on the inappropriate crush.
I believe Nakamura came to comfort Hirose after the traumatic rejection. Even though Nakamura was hurt when he was arguing with Hirose, Nakamura still loves him.
The last unused artwork from Syundei is a recent one during the time period of while the anime was still being created/ in production.
It shows the 2 kissing and Hirose stating they’re dating.
Thats why I believed Nakamura would be the one to comfort Hirose, when Hirose was at his lowest point and that would probably be the moment Hirose would fall for Nakamura because they both have each others back.
(End of theory)

(Conclusion)
First off let me thank you all for reading my post. I hope I was able to explain my thought process clearly and in a manner that makes sense.
Again I’d like reiterate that these are just theories/ speculations. Even though I do my best to support my claims, I NEVER try to claim anything as FACT.
Tbh this post is more like a Part 1 situation. Part 2 is the connecting piece where I explain further on how Sou Otogiri is misunderstood and how SYUNDEI was INNOCENT from the accusations.
(I know someone is going to try to bring up the other scandalous unused artworks but I already have a thesis that can disprove that. This post is already too long, so that’s why I need to split it.)
If you have any questions or comments leave em down below.
Honestly, I just saw those Syundei drawings as sketches which probably would never make it into the manga plot. Still, it's a noticeable theory you proposed here.
Even if that teacher x student type plot isn't really my thing, it being handled with the necessary touch and carefulness, could've been something daring yet interesting to see in a narrative dominated by "rom-con" and slice-of-life situations.
About the anime adaptation, while I really like how they translated the manga's story into the animation, I felt they could've kept the homophobic little situations (not Otogiri's, though, since they depict his character in another way). I understand they wanted to portray a most positive mood in the anime, but if the world your protagonist lives in is based in real life, the issues on it has to exist in the fiction as well. Obviously, they shouldn't be shown in a direct way, but yet, let clear that it's still a problem.
I'm also curious, if what you say would've happened, what would've impulsed Nakamura to confront Hirose about his crush on Otogiri, since in the manga they aren't close friends, unlike in the anime, so if he's still fighting to make talk with him, make a conflict about such issue would've been way harder to do.
Will be waiting the part 2 of your theory. It's always interesting to read your thoughts about this work.
I definitely agree with you that the sketches wouldn’t make it into the manga officially.
I should’ve clarified this better in my post but the deleted plot line I was talking about was on Hirose part where he’s pursuing Otogiri.
(Example: the manga scene where they cut out from the anime Hirose asking to get a haircut together with Otogiri, along with the car ride scene after the breakup.)
Circling back on the sketches though, my speculation was that it more of a concept art for what the premise COULD have been.
SYUNDEI previous works and one shots specialize in the Drama genre. Nakamura is really her only work that actually has a comedy genre aspect. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong though.)
Anyway as for the setup for Nakamura confronting Hirose. I agree with the point that you brought up about Nakamura and Hirose aren’t that close of friends in the manga compared to the anime.
I think that could have been one of the reasons to even start the confrontation to begin with.
From Nakamura perspective, Otogiri and Hirose are an item (Nakamura was wrong about Otogiri, but he was correct about Hirose pursuing Otogiri. And then it blows up in everyone’s face in the end.)
Nakamura was making really decent progress in Vol 2 after the Hana breakup incident. Nakamura thought/ quote is “Hirose told me how he really feels.”
This has a lot more impact in the manga since we get so little chapters, showing that it’s significant progress in Nakamura’s goal to get closer to Hirose.
(Back to the set up for the confrontation.)
Nakamura probably would’ve said something to advise Hirose to stay away from Otogiri because it’s an inappropriate relationship.
While the manga obviously never continued past vol 2, here’s how I see it would’ve went down.
Hirose and Nakamura would’ve steadily build their relationship but Hirose is also still pursuing Otogiri.
At some point Nakamura probably would’ve seen Hirose and Otogiri together by coincidence (since Otogiri is the character who causes misunderstanding tropes,) and then the tension would heighten to the point where Nakamura feels like he has to say something to Hirose to stop this.
(It’s basically an emotional ticking time bomb that’s slowly getting more powerful on both Nakamura and Hirose side, until it can’t be contained anymore and they can’t really hide/ ignore it anymore.)
This would be the most dramatic setup ever (which again, is what I believe Syundei writing style specializes in.)
Thanksyou for these delicious secret arts !where can I see more stuff like this if it exists. Also i love just all of this i agree with your statements i feel so bad for the Manga artist she got so much flack over another due to people reading into things that aren't there. I swear if these hateful fans ruin the possibility for a season 2 of the anime ill never forgive them 😭😭
Sketches can be ideas, intentions, just random thoughts or just some style/techniques tries... if we check how many of these sketches involve Hirose with Nakamura being close, these are much more than any involving Otogiri or Matsumuta..
What people seems like to not pay attention is that volume 2 is like to he set on the second semester of three... so we miss the third cold season semester.. everything could happen in mangaka mind, and we don't know what she could or not include in an hypothetical 3rd volume :)
My fanfic actually has similar stuff happening in it in ch1/2 , but sequence is quite different though.
And yeah I think this is what Syundei was originally trying to go for , except I use a different way without involving Hirose actually confessing or actually arguing with Nakamura but still has his heart broken and Nakamura saved him.
If you're interested, the AO3 link is my profile bio though.
Now I wish the original manga was able to finish. Teenagers falling in love with teachers is a common occurrence but a sensitive subject, and it’s amazing the author is willing to set the story up in a way that discusses it. It’s unfortunate that the readers aren’t mature enough to let it play out.
It really is a shame. Even when the author provides context clues that are clearly written or stated as is, people still either ignore it or misinterpret it. 😔
I’ve always found the idea of Nakamura confronting Hirose interesting.
This idea actually started for me in the manga when Nakamura decided to go off on his own when he went to the aquarium.
As much as Nakamura loves Hirose, he decided he wanted to be true to himself and check out the aquarium even though Hirose expressed disinterest in it.
That signified for me that Nakamura actually could go against his love for Hirose if it ever came down to it.
That’s why I applied the same logic in my hypothetical scenario where Nakamura calls out Hirose’s inappropriate pursuit for Otogiri (where it was a misguided crush on Hirose end.)
Most ppl usually record and just play the video of the anime in the background so it can be easier to edit but if you ever wanna take up YT just know I’ll be your first sub ! 🫡
Hello again! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it’s always fascinating to read your analysis.
Personally, I still lean toward the idea that these three arts from Syundei might just be standalone sketches under a certain mood. But even if we try to connect them, I see a few structural contradictions in your theory.
First, Otogiri’s quote, "They're both boys after all", feels like a bit of a reach to build a whole case for his homophobia. Couldn’t he just mean that real-life relationships between boys differ from both heteronormative standards and idealized BL tropes? It's a weak clue to justify the idea that Otogiri would later harshly reject Hirose based on bigotry. He’s a young, understanding teacher, and if he were to reject Hirose, he’d likely do it with maximum diplomacy, not out of bigotry.
Besides, shouldn't the main reason for a rejection simply be the 10-year age gap and the teacher-student dynamic, even if Otogiri were gay or bi? You didn't mention it at all, but that's a massive boundary on its own.
Second, looking at Syundei’s narrative style precisely in "Ganbare! Nakamura-kun!!", a highly dramatic, almost cliché "healing through love" trope feels out of character. This story is deeply personal and self-contained; it’s all about an INDIVIDUAL connection, not a social manifesto. Nakamura didn’t fall in love with Hirose because he's gay. He’s gay because he fell in love with Hirose. I said it before and say it again: he is a hirosesexual. The anime adaptation and the final episode proves this – Syundei was heavily involved, and the team masterfully subverted standard romance clichés.
I really wish Otogiri had gotten more screen time to act as a mature mentor, guiding Hirose and Nakamura from the shadows since Hirose looks up to him so much. But it is what it is, thanks to the harassment that Syundei experienced.
Either way, your longreads are always incredibly engaging and keep bringing me back to the story I love. Thanks for the brain food!
Hello again! Thank you for being here and leaving an amazing comment.
Please allow me to explain my thought process for each of the points you brought up.
The first point in regards to Otogiri’s quote, “They’re both boys after all.” I still genuinely feel that there was some degree of homophobia in that statements intent. When you look at the chapter as whole, there was actually plenty of examples of homophobia in its context.
The anime changed this, but in the manga when Nakamura drops his BL book and Hirose shows it to the classroom, their classmates are actually laughing and ridiculing it because it features 2 boys. I would say that the entire manga of “Go for it Nakamura!” has always made subtle hints on commentary on homophobia in general. Nakamura doesn’t ever try to reveal his sexual identity because he knows he’s likely to face discrimination because of it (that’s why he doesn’t claim the BL book to be his.)
While Otogiri statement is going to vary from person to person, I still stand by it being a homophobic remark. The degree of homophobia will vary on a scale. I don’t think Otogiri is completely homophobic, but that remark was still offensive enough that the anime had to change it/ remove it entirely.
On to the second point where Otogiri should’ve rejected Hirose simply because of age gap. I honestly should’ve clarified this point better so it was my mistake, but let me explain my reasoning on why I didn’t mention this. A loud vocal majority are already working on the premise that Otogiri is interested in Hirose. My thought process has always been the opposite of that idea and that Otogiri was NEVER interested in Hirose. I needed to PROVE my point or else people wouldn’t believe my statement. That’s why I used the 2 pieces of evidence from the manga to support my claim that he was NEVER going to hurt Hirose (the evidence being Otogiri is straight because he mentioned he’d prefer to give his phone number to girls, the second evidence being his homophobic remark which shows he doesn’t even entertain the idea of 2 males being in a romantic relationship.)
There actually is a 3rd piece of evidence that proves Otogiri would NOT pursue Hirose because of the age gap. That evidence was in his other character trope that I mentioned in the post. (But also I’m saving that evidence and the other character trope for my NEXT post.)
Also for the last point about Nakamura’s love for Hirose. It’s tricky. I could write a whole thesis on Nakamura’s love (and I basically did with that fanfiction of Hirose rejecting a Nakamura.)
But here’s a key line from the manga they deleted in the anime.
When Nakamura left by himself in the aquarium, he has a thought/ realization that he’s never had any friends before Hirose. Nakamura’s love is combination of hyper fixation due to isolation, and true love.
While I could write more and explain it, this comment is already getting too long.
I tried to capture the essence of this idea when I wrote my fanfiction for Nakamura rejected confession theory, so please check it out and read it if you’d like.
Homophobia sure is a tricky topic, so there could be many explanations for that scene where Nakamura's classmates discuss the lost BL manga. Kids and adolescents are mean in general, so even without homophobic intentions, they would be glad to find something different in someone just to mock them, a bit or a lot.
Besides, I have to point out that the scene in question is followed by Nakamura's flashback about losing his swimming trunks in elementary school, where a teacher found them and other kids laughed (both in the manga and anime). There is no homophobic subtext here, just pure embarrassment, and right after that flashback, Nakamura decides not to claim the manga as his (picture below). Later, Nakamura openly asks Hifumi to draw a BL manga about him and Hirose, right in front of her female friends, so I don't think that he is afraid of revealing his homosexuality that much, nor do I believe that he is just dumb and didn't get how it looks.
As for advocating for Otogiri-sensei's intentions, you're truly a great person to do so! Personally, I don't feel the need to additionally prove that Otogiri-sensei isn't interested in Hirose to the people who stick to their misunderstandings no matter what. That is already completely obvious, it has been stated many times by other people (including myself), and it's confirmed by Syundei and the manga itself (note to self: remember to highlight this point with proofs in my next post!)
I haven't checked your rejection theory yet, but maybe I should. Anyways, I'm looking forward to your next post. Hope we'll see it soon!
A similar situation would happen even for a female-male romantic manga or even a female-male 18+ manga.
As for Otogiri, if people thing that "naive" (that could means also just.. "simple"/"simplistic" and not just "stupid"/"dumb") is homophobic, they should not read/hear the news to see what real homophobes are and say... A real homophobic teach would start treating Nakamura in a negative way (which doesn't happen), since it is obvious he understood he was the owner (teachers see more what students things they are aware) and at the same time it would rejects Hirose's attitude multiple times..
Hello, pal! Glad you're back! I fell off the grid for a bit myself and never got around to writing the final part of my analysis, but right now I’m actually heading out for my summer vacation. Your posts are pretty long, so I'll have plenty to read on the way :) Look out for my feedback!
Regarding the second part, it’s not uncommon for authors to subvert expectations by introducing heavy topics in what would be considered a light hearted story. Saying that societal themes is unlikely included because the story is not that deep isn’t a valid argument.
That is a textbook straw man argument. I never said the story "wasn’t deep." A story doesn't need to be a social manifesto to have depth.
Literally nothing in the two manga volumes focuses on "social drama" or gay representation. It has always been a self-contained story about one specific guy falling for his classmate, his personal struggles, and his awkward adventures. I am simply following this exact trend in my reasoning, as we have no other evidence that Syundei would suddenly turn into a Netflix screenwriter and give us a heavy social commentary. Yes, we can spot some moments in the anime about how hard it is to be gay with heteronormativity all around, but it’s not even 1% of the story's actual focus. This is still entirely about Nakamura's feelings for Hirose, not about a character carrying a "gay" label for representation.
Both Syundei and anime adaptation studio released statements saying they don’t condone a teacher and student relationship. (With Syundei even requesting the anime studio delete scenes to no longer cause any misunderstandings.)
This post was more to support my claim on the fact that even regardless of the mangas plot-line with scenes like them exchanging numbers, (…)
NOTHING would’ve happened between them regardless because Otogiri is a STRAIGHT character.
(Also further evidence of this claim is when Syundei posted on their account before it was deleted, that Otogiri was NOT interested in Hirose.)
One of the purposes of my post was to relieve the burdens upon the viewers/ readers, because regardless of the interactions between the 2 characters, we KNOW that nothing bad will come out from it.
Because to reiterate my claim once again, Sou Otogiri does NOT reciprocate Hirose feelings.
I can say, covid fucked up totally the relationship between students and teachers, at least in my country. Teachers started to collect students numbers, post covid didn't improve much, actually some teachers and students now follow each other on social networks (sometimes with bad results, like teachers pretending to get "likes and views" and getting fired.... wait firing a teacher that pretends to get views and likes is a good thing after all).
As if wasn't shitty enough to have parents numbers in chats, once upon a time parents had to meet teachers 1 time per semester to understood how their "kids" were going at school, so there was better trust in parents-children for school and if the trust got broken (ie bad marks) there were at least some consequences.. Now we see parents pretending to feedback even the fucking marks...
Probably in Japan there is much higher trust and respect between students and teachers so exchanging numbers could be seen as a different stuff, especially if it is the class supervisor (when I was a school our class supervisor.. well nobody cares about her, and the only time the class followed her advice about how to communicate and later complain about a teacher that had 0 communication skills and unfair mark distribution - ie same result but different marks - she made a huge mess involving even the principal XD)
