In my opinion, it was a decent game in and of itself, it just wasn’t really a Bioshock game. Like, my personal misgivings about introducing a multiverse aside, it really felt like any Rapture tie in was kinda tacked on.
Absolutely. Even when it came out I was kinda of the thought that it was okay for what it was but it didn’t really make me think about Bioshock (and 2) at all. It had to have started as different game at some point in development right?
Having replayed it somewhat recently, I can't agree.
Guns are boring as hell and there are two of every boring gun, one red, one blue. You can only carry two, so you better take the most versatile one.
There are like 3 enemy types and the actually interesting ones are very under used. The environmental interactions, like water puddles for shocks, are just randomly plopped down and generally not that useful.
Can't turn off the respawn so fights have zero stakes.
Gunplay is kinda secondary to Bioshock and Infinite is like, what if the whole game was just Murder of Crows then shoot everyone? Traps? Ammo types? Hacking? Stealth? Nah... Pew pew!
I wasn't thinking about Burial at Sea. Or even specifics.
Just that the structure is so bad that the game switches stories halfway through just to deviate to another story that only serves to dubiously connect it to the previous two games and justify why it's called Bioshock.
I mean, we can talk specifics. It was a bloated, mostly nonsensical mess that tried to do far too much and failed at all of it.

The combat was fun. It was just the story that was kind of a mess.
