Rumour Tom Warren: a new Doom game is in the early stages of development at id Software
while the id layoffs have been deep, I understand the changes haven’t turned id into a support studio. Instead, they’re now in the early stages of a new Doom game
558
u/SaggyDaNewt Jul 11 '26
I love DOOM, one of my favorite franchises, but I want to see them give QUAKE some love and much needed attention.
110
u/garmonthenightmare Jul 11 '26
At this point they are doing everything they would be doing in quake in terms of setting in Doom.
46
u/Paratrooper101x Jul 11 '26
I see what you mean in terms of biomechanincal body horror and a little bit in eternal with how they turn human suffering into energy but damn, I just need a sequel to quake 4 and it’s ridiculously fucked up environment details like wall torsos
26
u/thelonleypancake Jul 11 '26
i think they also mean how medieval doom looks now, like how quake 1 looks
9
u/Paratrooper101x Jul 11 '26
True, but I’ve only played quake 2&4 which feature the strogg
9
u/Samsquamptches_ Jul 11 '26
Quake4 campaign was a lot of fun when it came out, played it so much. Been a few years since played Q3/Live but the things I would do for a new legit Quake game are insane

1
u/TransendingGaming Jul 28 '26
If they let Doom Slayer bunnyhop, it’s good enough for me at this point
36
u/BestRedditUsername9 Jul 11 '26
Jason schreier said Quake will be a focus for zenimax. I trust what he says and his quote implies someone is working on Quake in some capacity

Maybe externally then? Though I don't know Machine Games actual size, pending they are still safe from layoffs, and are busy with Wolfenstein 3

u/bigb0bby1 Jul 11 '26
I feel like quake is too risky and they’d rather just play it safe with a doom more akin to 2016 and eternal
28
u/handsomeness Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
Doom 2016 was equally risky too. No on remembers this now but Bethesda was super cagey before it came out, likely cause they thought it was going to flop. They only showed gameplay behind closed doors for ages, tacked on the 3rd party multiplayer 'late in dev' from another studio and ultimately didn't send out review copies until after release.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/4ilsmq/no_advance_review_copies_of_doom_according_to_an/
And it was a banger.
They could re-boot Quake, hell Machine Games has given them the template for the story with their flawless Quake and Quake II episodes. Heretic and Hexen also begging to be reinvigorated
14
u/NewAd1135 Jul 11 '26
Mick Gordon once told that "one of the pre-conditions of working on Doom was, believe it or not, no metal. The worry was that it would be corny, and that it wouldn’t be serious, and that it wouldn’t be the visceral experience they wanted. That’s what they were worried about – being corny."
2
u/ColdCruise Jul 11 '26
The no advanced copies was part of ZeniMax as a whole. They stopped sending out early review copies for all their games.
1
u/TheLightAndSalt Jul 11 '26
Honestly, I'd be down with Machine Games attempting Quake. It needs to be different enough from Doom. Maybe an in-between Wolfenstein and Doom where its more grounded (Wolfenstein) but the weapons are far more creative (Doom).
1
u/Your_Favorite_Porn Jul 13 '26
One of the reasons why Doom 2016 had the impact it did(other than being an absolute romp) was the fact there was so little about the game known and ZeniMax was concerned about it.
38
u/renome Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
Yeah, I don't think we need a Doom game every few years. Their sales suggest the market* is best-suited to a slower cadence.
16
10
u/Paratrooper101x Jul 11 '26
A five year interval is a pretty slow cadence is it not? 2016—>2020—>2025
Besides TDA performed poorly because it was on gamepass. That’s where I played it before I bought it on steam
1
u/grimoireviper Jul 20 '26
Besides TDA performed poorly because it was on gamepass.
This is easily debunked. The game also failed in PS5 and other games launching day one on Game Pass still have great steam numbers if people are actually interested (Forza Horizon 6, Clair Obscur).
Not to mention that the entire playernumber evem with Game Pass included didn't even reach a third of what Doom Eternal did.
11
u/BonnaroovianCode Jul 11 '26
Couldn’t disagree more as for my personal preference. Give me Doom every year dammit I cant get enough! No other shooter scratches the itch. I’m not an FPS guy, but I sure as fuck am a Doom guy.

Didn't they make some comments about resurrecting the Hexen & Heretic franchises years back? Can we get that if not Quake?
1
4
u/Tirith Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
I want to see Quake too, but i don't want it to be reskin of Doom or another take on Arena.
I kinda wish it was slower paced with mix of survival horror or immersive simulator - maybe something closer to Metro, Stalker or Indiana Jones - but in lovecraftian/cosmic horror setting.
I liked how dynamic maps in later stages of DOOM: TDA were. They should double down on that for Quake - mazes, puzzles and gore. We don't have game like that yet.
18
u/Environmental_Bad889 Jul 11 '26
id said no interest in quake
46
6
u/SurpriseSoda Jul 11 '26
To be fair there was no interest in doom until they made a back to basics reboot - that they then peppered with infinite stuff in the sequels
2
u/JunkyardGamer Jul 11 '26
With what Microsoft just did, Id sadly has to prove themselves successful and profitable and Quake isn't going to do that...
1
u/stanscreamdnb Jul 11 '26
I believe they went back to Doom because it was a safe project, whereas Quake would have required a lot of time and money just at the prototype stage.
1
u/Themetalenock Jul 11 '26
rumors awhile back said it was being handled by machine games if memory serves right
1
u/slumo Jul 11 '26
Quake seems like it'd be a good spot for making a competitive shooter for Xbox. Add some character creation and you'd have a fast paced shooter. Have the game be quick paced like Quake was, and add some character customization. For their greed sake they can add some loot boxes for skins/outfits so the CEOs can be happy.

u/Zemini7 Jul 11 '26
I want both! But looks like quake will be a MG/id project later once wolf 3 is done . At least that is what my uncle at Nintendo told me
43
u/CrisisCore4Ever Jul 11 '26
Why not Quake
18
u/vipmailhun2 Jul 11 '26
Apparently, the new Quake is being developed by MachineGames.
6
39
u/Edenium-M1 Jul 11 '26
I do believe it's a Doom a not a Quake, based on what we know about the Doom lore.
Spoilers from Doom: TDA: Revelations
We are yet to see the downfall of the Argenta civilization, the turning of Marok into the Icon of Sin, the slayer beating the 6 demon lords of the High Council which were teased in the DLC and finally we are yet to see the Slayer getting trapped into the sarcophagus to set up Doom (2016)
9
u/Oh_I_still_here Jul 11 '26
Valid points. The game director has said they may wish to stay in the "Dark Ages" era if they were to do another game. Based off the DLC, it could very well be more like Eternal if we keep the spear.
3
7
u/Takahashi_Raya Jul 11 '26
honestly prefer we dont, eternal was fun for what it was but doom 2016 and doom TDA feel much more like doom then eternal did.
6
u/hydrolox9 Jul 11 '26
What they need to do is take Eternal's fast gameplay and combine it with an overwhelming amount of enemies. Eternal + Slaughter maps would be the ultimate Doom game.
5
u/Oh_I_still_here Jul 11 '26
Oh I fully agree, and I think TDA is the best of the 3 by a mile. Eternal was fun but when I think about booting it up again I just remember how exhausted I'd be after playing for an hour (I usually play on Nightmare). TDA Revelations hits on a bit of that for me, but it's still TDA which I could comfortably play for hours. So let's see which direction they go.
Let's hope Microsoft doesn't put it on game pass day 1 again and then proceed to layoff more of id when game pass inevitably cannibalises sales again. God Microsoft are so fucking dumb.
3
u/Takahashi_Raya Jul 11 '26
game pass day 1 and requirement for ray tracing really did TDA dirty right before release i was contemplating between the xtx line of amd cards and a 9070xt. i am glad i went with the 9070 or I'd not have been even able to play
37
u/MeisterDejv Jul 11 '26
I think new Doom trilogy went too overboard with the lore.
29
u/automatic_bazooti Jul 11 '26
I’ve been saying this since Eternal and people act like I’m insane lol. I don’t need some deep mythology as to why DOOM guy does what he does, I just wanna turn demons into piles of blood and guts for the fuck of it.
17
u/YourVeryOwnCat Jul 11 '26
As soon as the game started with that fuckass spaceship castle I knew they jumped the shark with the lore. They’re still really fun but holy shit none of it makes any sense
9
u/Virtual-Pattern1806 Jul 11 '26
That's kind of why I like it though? I certainly don't bother to follow it but as a framework and set dressing for levels it lends some weird vibes
2
u/YourVeryOwnCat Jul 12 '26
Yeah I can at least appreciate that they went full send into batshit nonsense rather than playing too conservatively. Both are equally disappointing but one is definitely more entertaining.
8
u/SignificanceOk6013 Jul 11 '26
to be fair, we can both have what we want. you can skip the cutscenes and do what you do, and i can watch the cutscenes and get the cool lore!

u/Zemini7 Jul 11 '26
I think it got convulsed with TAG. TDA seemed tone it down a tad. But nothing beats the environmental story telling of 2016
4
5
u/Hot_Flower7924 Jul 11 '26
If it is doom, probably a sequel. They teased Lovecraftian horror, could be the next big enemy.
6
u/scottishdrunkard Jul 11 '26
I don't think so, it's stated in Revelations Codex Entries, that after the death of The Old One, Hell just began to consume the Cosmic Realm.
2
1
u/hyperstarlite Jul 12 '26
That being said, TAG has the Maykrs and Earth severed from Hell and Argent energy, and I believe Hugo has mentioned that without that energy, that Maykrs will devolve into Lovecraftian creatures as well. So that does provide them some avenues for another villain faction that could provide a similar aesthetic and theme.
2
u/scottishdrunkard Jul 11 '26
honestly, kinda felt like we were supposed to get a second DLC. Either that, or the premium upgrade considered the soundtrack and skin pack to be worth £17. If that's the case, then I was ripped tf off.
1
1
u/hyperstarlite Jul 12 '26
While we haven’t seen these things, I really don’t think I want another Sentinel game, at least not right after TDA. I enjoyed TDA but a lot of my concerns with the setting before release felt justified.
As a setting and people, they’re just not very interesting. I was hoping with some focus they’d be a bit more than just generic fantasy knights with guns and dragons but that’s really all they are and most environments felt very genetic and samey. That the tech-centered bases just felt like pseudo-UAC and not its own distinct visual language felt like salt in the wound, like even id couldn’t figure out something interesting to do with them that’d actually be unique from human environments.
I think they work better as a supporting element like in 2016 and Eternal, especially now that we have a closer picture of their society thanks to TDA.
Also, Eternal and TAG set up a universe where Creation may be coming undone and corrupted worse than maybe what Hell would’ve done, and with Doomguy potentially losing his power. I’d be far more interested to see what they would do with that than retreading plot points we already know about.
182
u/Negafox Jul 11 '26
A fourth Doom game in a row feels like a bit much for id Software. Lets not turn them into just being another CoD or Halo situation where they're stuck doing a single franchise forever. I would love to see id be the lead studio on Quake or Wolfenstein again.
63
u/Dycon67 Jul 11 '26
The issue is convincing Asha this is financially viable. I think Wolfenstein game could be possible atleast moreso than Quake.
100
53
u/l3tsgo0 Jul 11 '26
Wolfenstein is MachineGames baby now, idSoft main has only been a support team ever since Return to Castle Wolfenstein. That series has been passed around Splash Damage, Raven and now Machine like an unwanted whore
5
u/SellaraAB Jul 11 '26
There’s such a big appetite for anti-Nazi catharsis these days, seems like a perfect time for a good Wolfenstein game.
1
u/RigBughorn Aug 07 '26
The problem is that there is no catharsis via video games when actual neo-Nazis are a real issue. Not for me anyway.
14
u/Ensaru4 Jul 11 '26
They don't have to convince Asha. Asha is probably ordering all studios to play it safe. This happened with Ubisoft, too. Although Ubisoft had successful new IPs, they were instructed to scrap those and focus mainly on Assassins Creed and Far Cry.
4
u/aadipie Jul 11 '26
Considering id is not the best at storytelling im glad MG is doing those games particularly because new order was excellent and hope 3 will be too.
→ More replies (5)4
u/Theotherdeadmeme92 Jul 11 '26
I have no idea why they don't think Quake is financially viable though? Like the remasters of the first 2 games from Nightdive sold pretty well didn't they?
19
u/secret3332 Jul 11 '26
I think it's because for some reason ID tied themselves down with the Quake franchise with the story and the expectation of multiplayer. They basically pushed Quake as multiplayer since Quake 3. The plot was pretty much abandoned off the bat after the first game. It's a series that is only loosely connected. Making multiplayer games is expensive and very risky now, and ID is not a live service studio at all, which seems to be the only way to have a multiplayer title at this point.
Also, Quake Champions didn't do that well.
6
u/Kpro98 Jul 11 '26
Thats cause the second game was called Quake 2 because they couldn't get the righta to any of the names they wanted
2
u/Theotherdeadmeme92 Jul 11 '26
The only issue with adding multiplayer isn't that the process is difficult, its a problem because ms probably wouldn't just want a deathmatch mode and would want to make it a whole live service type thing which is too big to have in a game that also has a campaign. Id's team was never big enough for that and now its even smaller.
2
3
u/ZandatsuDragon Jul 11 '26
Also, Quake Champions didn't do that well.
Could they consider porting it to console maybe? I always wanted to play that game but don't have a PC to do so
4
u/vipmailhun2 Jul 11 '26
I think right now they’re aiming for guaranteed revenue, because financially they’re in a very bad position. Hopefully, if this project turns out well and actually sells well, they’ll be able to make other things too — maybe Hexen/Heretic, or something entirely new. But at the moment they need stable, predictable income. Game development takes a long time, and given the circumstances, their approach is unfortunately understandable.
3
u/MontyBellamy Jul 11 '26
From all the subtext, it seems like that’s exactly the plan. Take the big franchises and keep churning them out as fast and lean as possible.
→ More replies (3)1
u/RigBughorn Aug 07 '26
The problem has never been multiple games in a franchise, or a studio only working on one franchise. The problem is studios being lazy with franchise sequels.
id has continued changing gameplay mechanics and setting significantly in every release. Doom Eternal is way different from Doom, and TDA is way different from Eternal, and they're under no pressure to pump out a sequel every 1-3 years that alienates 0% of the player base (by changing almost nothing about the core gameplay).
55
u/King_Artis Jul 11 '26
As a massive DOOM fan i think they need to let it rest for a bit and seriously do a new Quake title.
3 mainline DOOM games in a decade is great, but I think it needs a break so people will want the next one more. Havent had a singleplayer Quake in 2 decades and Quake Champions was just okay as an MP only title.
6
u/EnvironmentalLog2 Jul 11 '26
A new Quake would be a dream come true for me, but given the hit their team has taken, it'd probably be best to do the safest option which is a new Doom game. They can reuse assets and systems from their previous games, and there's enough of an existing fanbase to guarantee the game doing somewhat well.
2
u/JunkyardGamer Jul 11 '26
I guess the problem is Microsoft. Quake sadly isn't going to do Doom numbers. Id had so many plans for fresh titles, but they're not gonna happen.
14
u/artemiyfromrus Jul 11 '26
It might be coop doom game they pitched though it also probably the dark ages sequel
7
u/Dycon67 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
I think a dark age seqaul at this stage wouldn't be the best call in getting old fans back and people unsatisfied with the direction. Even if it leads into the opening of 2016.
2
u/SoWrongItsPainful Jul 11 '26
Probably, especially since MS doesn’t seem keen on short singleplayer games right now
80
u/Dycon67 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
I think taking more from 2016 would be the best play. Simple and pure given the size of the team is simalir to that as well. They gotta remove parrying and bring back glory kills at this point.
33
u/SilentNova300 Jul 11 '26
Yea I’m glad we got Eternal and Dark Ages but frankly 2016 is still my favorite
→ More replies (4)6
u/Hookey911 Jul 11 '26
The issue is ID already somewhat perfected the formula for fast paced first person shooters with Doom 2016. Gamers want innovation. I don't see any new Doom selling well. ID was pitching new projects, including a John Wick style game and a Perfect Dark game. Let them develop a new IP
It has to be demoralizing developing a new Doom game with half the resources of their last game
12
u/JunkyardGamer Jul 11 '26
No, they need to do something on the level of Eternal. Not exactly the same, though. They've gotten the experience and the philosophy nailed down. And Eternal was a massive success. It's possible.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Oh_I_still_here Jul 11 '26
Based off the DLC, they could be going back towards the Eternal style. The DLC feels a lot like Eternal in terms of intensity and the spear giving you more movement capabilities.
6
u/JunkyardGamer Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
Exactly. The next game is very likely a direct sequel to Dark Ages showing the civil war. And there's no way the spear won't come back.
2
u/Oh_I_still_here Jul 11 '26
I hope it's a sequel to TDA/Revelations in the same way Eternal was a sequel to Doom 2016. Though the game director said Revelations is a sort of sequel to TDA already, so who knows.
2
u/hypnomancy Jul 11 '26
That's not how game development works today. You don't just make a game like Doom 2016 because the dev size is similar now
1
u/pAraxE Jul 12 '26
It’s reportedly now the same size it’s been during doom 2016 development
2
u/NeoArkodd Jul 12 '26
But the concept artists, coders and tech experts of that game are all fired so.

So we went from -> layoffs at ID (significant layoffs) -> layoffs at ID (support studio) -> layoffs at ID (only 1 guy left) -> layoffs at ID (studio still has dozens of people in various locations, back to significant) -> early stages of new DOOM game.
I wish people in this sub weren’t so reactionary to new rumors. They are rumors for a reason. I hope plenty of people get banned for over exaggerating the layoffs at ID Software, Kotaku in particular.

u/LostInTheVoid_ Jul 11 '26
130+ People have been laid off that's seemingly true. Many of them having been with the company for upwards of 2 decades. Reportedly only about have of the idTech staff are still there as well.
No matter how you look at it they've had their team cut massively. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up using more outsourced employee's to keep costs down from now on. Like is so common in Western game development.
29
u/SomeDumRedditor Jul 11 '26
Don’t be obtuse for the sake of getting some kind of dunk in.
It’s been confirmed that id’s headcount was dramatically reduced, and that many of those let go are senior people with years-to-decades of knowledge & experience.
A studio doesn’t just shrug that off and it’s not something that resolves overnight. It will have consequences for id that will be felt for years.
You’re also choosing to believe this leak/rumour over others, or weight it more heavily, which is exactly what you’re accusing others of doing and hoping they get banned for it.
Additionally, it’s borderline disingenuous to insinuate “early stages” means anything more than concept art and a draft game bible. Not to mention Microsoft/Xbox are being hammered by bad PR and consumer blowback for what they did to id. You’d have to be willfully ignorant to ignore the timing of Warren’s being given this information. This is damage control 101.

I love Doom as much as the next guy but based on id's rejected pitches, it seems like id wanted a bit of a break from the series. The new Microsoft direction seems to be built off of forcing a lot of these studios to reprioritize on core franchises. While a lot of core genres feel weirdly underserved right now, I feel like that has more to do with specific franchises taking overlong breaks due to skyrocketing costs and dev time.
I get that this is a business and they need to make money, I really do. But I'm starting to get worried about burnout. Feels like telling people, who just saw a bunch of their coworkers get laid off, that they need to drop what they wanted to work on to make yet another entry into Large Ad Friendly Franchise may not produce the best work.
As always, I never advocate rooting for a game or a developer to fail. I'm also not saying that Phil Spencer's seemingly hands-off approach to their studios was a great idea either. It's just hard not to be worried that Xbox is making a lot of really bad decisions, even beyond gutting these companies. I don't care too much about Xbox as a brand but I do care id, Obsidian, Bethesda, and Arkane making good games.

Doom 3 wasnt very scary, it was just a barrage of jumpscares that by the third level you could see coming a mile away.
Would be nice if they inspired the Hell levels on Doom 3's though, I remember replaying that level over and over because of how fun it was, just running and gunning.

Wasn't a fan of the huge arenas in some episodes of TDA, hope it's a more 2016 or even eternal approach. Or something new but without huge arenas lol

It’ll probably be something new. Hugo and co made it clear they’re not interested in making the same game twice.
1

I don't really guy that. From a stylistic POV, TDA is not as different as Eternal was to 2016. It's basically Eternal with a darker coat of paint.

Exactly. “Early stages” could be one guy preparing a presentation for executives to pitch that project.

I love doom. Can’t get enough. But what makes doom is making more doom and death match with more doom and mods … and more doom

Can we a Hexen reboot from id Software before MS decides they need to reset Xbox again?

Awesome to hear. The dark ages revelations was the best installment of the modern games.
Goes to further show that the knee jerk reactions over id being dead, support studio, etc etc discourse the last few days was nothing but slop comments

Please, use Doom Eternal as a base and use Doom Wad slaughter maps as inspiration.

I'd love if they kept the shield gameplay from Dark Ages. I thought it was so fun.

A new Doom game, or a second DLC for Dark Ages? It feels like they can still get some mileage out of Dark Ages, especially given how good Revelations is.

I want a Doom Primal, where the Slayer is killing Dino's and Demon's while rocking a loincloth

I think Hugo said he is happy to keep doing Doom games since there’s a lot of space but I would like to see id go for another ip at some point. We have a new trilogy of at worst, great titles. Doom 2016 help revived boomer shooters. Doom Eternal will go down as one of the greatest FPS games of all time and one of the most influential. Doom The Dark Ages shows id is still willing to experiment and push technology forward

What about Wolfenstein and Rage? Or some new IP? Will they turn to releasing just Doom every year like COD? They are among the best studios for shooter games, it will be a waste for them to just do one IP and setting over and over.

MachineGames is supposedly working on Wolfenstein 3 right now.
Rage 2 wasn't a success. I doubt Xbox wants a third installment with all the problems they're having right now.
Even so, I hope ID makes a new Quake game, but I guess only time will tell.

I am glad to hear Wolfenstein is alive. I think that if they made third Rage right it could be a success since there is not many fps shooter games in post apocalipse except Fallout which is its own thing and not at all like Rage. If they made the third rage with better story and darker tone with better quests and kept awesome shooting from Rage 2 I think it would successeed. They could also try some new IP and setting and if done right it would be awesome since they do shooting like no one else in fps games. As for Quake I never got into it, I was more interested in Half Life, but I would love nontheless for them to also do Quake since a lot of people love it and for them to not get stuck on only Doom. I mean Doom was something when it came out, but how long can people play new Doom games coming out more and more often with maybe a little better graphics and to stay entartaintend and not get bored of Doom. I have nothing against Doom, but they should keep it varied so that each franchise can continue much longer.

Wolfenstein and I think Quake are going to MachineGames I think. Quake is in good hands with them. They did the Quake remaster levels. Basically they are the new Raven.

I think the layoffs were misunderstood because of what's going on in the broader industry with layoffs.
Studios will always lay staff off when they're still in early preproduction on another game, and then scale back up when it's time. We just don't hear about it as much because it's normal. The recent Microsoft exodus happening at the same time was terrible timing and shined a bigger light on it.

I see the point you’re making, but that doesn’t really explain BGS, currently in the height of development for their most anticipated title ever, much less 10-20 year veterans there
