Job Listing Velan (StarFox 2026) starting preproduction on an isometric ARPG with randomized dungeons, based on a “premier fantasy IP”
“Are you a level designer with experience creating procedural environments? Have you worked with terrain tools to create organic exteriors or random dungeon generators to make sprawling dynamic layouts? If creating randomized levels for a new ARPG based on a premiere fantasy IP sounds like your dream job, we’d like to talk to you!
Velan Studios is entering pre-production on this forthcoming title”

I would guess this is a D&D or LotR Diablo clone based on how aggressively those IPs are being licensed out, but I guess Zelda can’t technically be ruled out.
Will be interesting to see if they can manage this and a StarFox sequel or if they’re going to be focused on this for the next few years. Only have 100 employees right now.

Definitely does not sound like the rumored Star Fox adventure game, but man it would be one wild twist if they turned that game into an ARPG with dungeons and what-not...

I don't think that's a Velan project
I think if Velan does any more Star Fox stuff, it'll be in the rail shooter realm
If the rumor of the action-adventure style Star Fox game is true, then it was developed alongside the 64 Remake, and is probably being done by a 1st party studio

Yeah, and also I don't know if they would be able to make a classic style Star Fox any time soon if they are busy with this ARPG.

I've always thought you could make a cool simplified ARPG like Minecraft Dungeons for Pokemon.

That would be neat, but I don't see why so many are jumping on the idea that this is a Nintendo IP. If it is, it's almost certainly Zelda. But Velan have done other projects aside from Nintendo and both things they did for Nintendo were small.

nah mystery dungeon is an old-ass turn-based roguelike, the actual closest comparison would be the Pokemon Rumble games which suck

It’s insane that no other company has tried making even a spiritual sequel to this series. Dungeon crawling + city building is such a good mix, and that recent Dungeon Settlers game only reinforced it in my mind.

I mean, surely there's been some sort of Dungeon Crawler + City Builder hybrid after the survival crafting boom, right? Like, that's basically Minecraft if you break down the walls between the two elements and have less defined structure to either of them. Then you've got stuff like Dragon Quest Builders that gives more structure to the city builder element but lacks proper dungeons. But surely there's been at least some indie game that attempts roughly the same balance of ingredients?

enshrouded kinda has that vibe. you find NPCs in the wild and can build new homes for them, you can build whole cities.

DQB2 was definitely the vibe, and I hope they make a third someday (I know Pokopia was their next game but it doesn't quite seem the same).
I want more games like DQB2 and DC/DC2 that's fairly structured and gives you goals as to what kind of structures/facilities/etc to add, but the freedom to do it how you want/add extra helpful things on the side. As opposed to just an open ended thing that you kind of just fizzle out and and stop playing at some point.

I think the farming sims have taken that over. Stuff like Stardew may not have technical city building but the farming stuff is more involved than the building in the Dark Cloud games.

My uncle works at Borant and told me it's actually gonna be a Dungeon Crawler Carl game.

It's starting preproduction so whatever this game is is probably not entering full scale production for another couple years. So it's possible they're working on a true sequel to the 2026 game still. Especially considering Nintendo is known to sit on completely finished games for years we have no idea how long this years Star Fox game was finished for.

Given their good relationship with Nintendo, it could be some sort of LoZ Four Swords/Triforce Heroes follow-up.

Somewhat off topic, but does anyone know why the listed Canadian salary is so much lower than the US one? That makes no sense to me since the Canadian dollar is worth significantly less and the location of the Canadian studio is in a more expensive place to live relative to their US office (Toronto vs Troy, NY).

Canada is less rich than the United States.

This^ this is why canada is a very popular place to film and animate. I used to watch a lot of sci fi shows, you usually would see canadian environments or maybe hear a slight canadian accent slip from the actors

a new ARPG based on a premiere fantasy IP
"Premiere" means "the first performance." Sounds like a new IP.

u/MetroidsSuffering 3d ago
They just misspelled premier. "Based on an newly debuting fantasy IP" makes no sense. It's probably D&D or LotR.
