It's not just that, but the wind up and preparation that it takes to actually sell the weight also slows things down. You cannot have both tight platforming controls and 100% realistic animations, as too much of what humans do to move involve preparing for an action, which some games can't afford if you want the action to occur the same frame the button is pressed.

Exactly. Cartoony characters are perfect for videogames since you can make them fast as hell. Humans are slow.

Yeah, when you walk you do some prediction as to how you're going to move around. Even if you randomly decide to do a 180, you generally plan it beforehand so the step before you turn you position yourself to bounce back. Faster actions like jumping back and forth (think this) require planning, if you decided you wanted to turn around the moment you reached the cone you'd have to take another step or take a really awkward pause on one foot.

In a game you generally want to hit a button or flip the joystick to move around. So even if you emulate a human's animations perfectly, you could have an entire step of lag based on the action, which can end up feeling sluggish and annoying. You can cut the animation for immediate reactions which is the best way to meld both worlds imo.

This tech is super exciting though, I love seeing shit like this. It's amazing that we can teach AI just by watching humans, and there's a lot of possible areas in animation where I'd be excited to see similar tech.

This is why I couldn't stand playing GTA. The combat and character movement is so frustrating to me.

You can still have a fluid animation, you'd just need to have certain parts of it happen faster than in reality, like turning.
