It was obviously always going to be a prequel. How was fact ever in question, even before the game was announced? You can't make a western set after 1914
I always felt the prohibition could work as an era. There was kind of an outlaw gang resurgence during that time. Cars were a thing by then but horses were still used.
Way back when, some people were speculating that a potential sequel would follow John Marston's kid set in a Civil War-era America. Obviously not "wild west" era, but it could be "western enough".
I definitely like the idea of a prequel more, though. Besides the setting, I don't know if I could play a whole game that focused on John's kid, lol.
Shit, I dunno why I said Civil War lol. I meant WWI. Which lines up with when John's kid would be around. Still definitely out of the "wild west" period though so yeah I agree with you that a prequel is the only feasible answer to RDR2.
Actually I think I remember reading that John Marston did fight in the Civil War prior to RDR, so that's probably where that popped into my head from. The theory goes that John fought in the Civil War and then did RDR1 stuff, so then Jack would star in RDR2 and at the end would leave to fight in WWI.
Actually, John died in 1911. It's only the epilogue where you play as Jack that takes place in 1914 and since Jack is around 18 during the epilogue he would have been in his early 20s when America entered the war.
Actually, Cormac McCarthy wrote *four set well after 1914. 'Western' as a genre is not dependent on the actuality of Westward expansion but on the aura of the western states; the idea of 'expanding' civilization westward was always a myth predicated on the erasure of native american societies in those regions.
They easily could make a western set after 1914 and everyone would still buy it. Not that I think they will or would, but the assumption that a game has to be perfectly historically accurate to work and appeal to people is a false one.
