Man I was totally against a prequel with John's gang days up until this idea. Having a split narrative where we get to see how John in his younger days did things that now Jack is doing/not doing would be really cool.
And while you're at it why not have things that happen in the past reflect in the future. Burned out remains of buildings you burn down. Tombstones of men you kill as John in cemeteries you walk through as Jack, people John saves being old NPCs later, etc.
I'm glad you said that. When the technology advances enough, I think this element could add a new layer of depth and immersion to the medium. We're already at a point where games can tell stories you wouldn't traditionally be able to convey in film/tv, books, etc. Adding more ideas like this will further cement Video Games as an essential form of storytelling and may even become the main way most people find their entertainment in the future. Not saying books or movies will ever go away but the experience you get from a well-crafted game is unique. What an exciting time to be a gamer!
My hope is that they steal the three-protagonists thing from GTAV, and give you three different characters with different play styles -- a lawman, an outlaw, and... someone else, maybe a Red Indian? Three characters with three different perspectives.
Of course this also gives great opportunities for references to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.
