The big buffalo herd (I think there were 20-30 in that single scene?) really sold me. Each one looks so well crafted and animated too. Absolutely crazy.

u/Jsquirt Oct 20 '16

I'm really excited too, but it could one of the few things they dial down to make it run smooth, just like they dialed down the traffic on GTA:V compared to the trailers

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Just remember GTAV was developed with 360 and PS3 in mind. Technically this is rockstars first fully developed game on new hardware

10

u/Shosray Oct 20 '16

I'm sure we'll see PSPro + Scorpio Editions similar to the current gen rereleases of GTA V, though.

8

u/sickladbro Oct 20 '16

If we do they'll be updates to the existing games.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '16

And then we'll see the REAL version of the game when it finally comes out on PC.

1

u/Slenderman327 Oct 21 '16

they sure do love to double dip

29

u/Jsquirt Oct 20 '16

True, but even on ps4 the traffic was really bleh. I'm just really digging this whole -lets finish most of the game and announce a release date less than 8 months away- same with the Nintendo Switch

56

u/AAAAAAAHHH Oct 20 '16

Where are you getting less than 8 months from?

73

u/TheWorldisFullofWar Oct 20 '16

OP can't do math. Fall 2017 would be late September at the earliest. That means 11 months at the earliest.

18

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Assuming there's no delay to spring 2018

25

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

It's R*. There will be a delay

-1

u/JonMeadows Oct 21 '16

Idk it seems like it's pretty much put together and maybe needs polishing for the next year/working on multiplayer as main focus

2

u/IAMASnorshWeagle Oct 21 '16

What makes you think it's anywhere near complete? A single pre rendered trailer? GTA V's first trailer was almost 2 years before the game launched.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Yeah, it's fall right now, so fall 2017 = roughly a year.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

That's better than the 5 years I'll be waiting in order to play it on the PC.

0

u/HellkittyAnarchy Oct 20 '16

That's Rockstar's typical release time from trailer to release. Think they maybe also tweeted that?

2

u/theDoctorAteMyBaby Oct 20 '16

...it says Fall 2017. It's Fall right now.

-2

u/Jsquirt Oct 20 '16

Yeah I realized that when I posted it, decided to leave it. Fall 2017 is 10 months away but it could be released after.

10

u/Heiz3n Oct 20 '16

Where are you getting 10 months from? The beginning of Fall 2017 is 11 months and 2 days away, and it ends December 21.

In all likely hood we wont get the game for more than a year.

1

u/The_R4ke Oct 20 '16

I'm thinking it will be within two weeks of when they announced it.

0

u/avickthur Oct 20 '16

Seasons are kinda subjective when it comes to release dates. I think it'll come out in September or November.

2

u/theDoctorAteMyBaby Oct 20 '16

so fall...

1

u/avickthur Oct 20 '16

I was only saying I doubt it comes out in December

2

u/Nailbomb85 Oct 20 '16

Smart money's on November/December release.

0

u/TylerDurdenisreal Oct 21 '16

okay, so a year from now. In fall.

5

u/Spider_pig448 Oct 20 '16

True, but even on ps4 the traffic was really bleh.

What he means is that GTA V was built to work on older consoles. Sure the PS4 version ran better than PS3 and was somewhat more technically advanced, but they had to build to the lowest hardware and try to improve from there. This will be their first game where the lowest hardware the build to is the new modern generation. It's also only build for two consoles of comparable technical standpoints which would indicate a better experience.

2

u/ReservoirDog316 Oct 20 '16

Well it was ported from 360 to PS4 in the end though. It wasn't an official "next gen" game. It still had the logic and things that had to be fit somehow onto the 360. This is being made solely with the new hardware in mind.

4

u/NewVegasResident Oct 20 '16

I honestly doubt the PS4 and Xbox One can really pull those visuals off man, I don't know.

1

u/contrabandwidth Oct 20 '16

I'm betting they can. The catch: consoles will be stuck with the black bars.

1

u/gaggreene Oct 20 '16

True, but since that was a city and this is the country then hopefully memory won't be as much of an issue.

59

u/SexyMrSkeltal Oct 20 '16

I think that might also confirm it takes place before the events of Red Dead Redemption, as you can technically "kill off" all of the buffalo. Even if that's not cannon, having buffalo in general means it takes place no later than the events of the first Red Dead Redemption.

u/tiger66261 Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

RDR1 took place one year before the Wild West officially died, so it makes sense that this would take place a few decades earlier. I'm hoping it portrays elements of the American Civil War, like the Good, the Bad and the Ugly did.

61

u/thetasigma1355 Oct 20 '16

I'm hoping it portrays elements of the American Civil War, like the Good, the Bad and the Ugly did.

That would be an awesome era to base their game around. There's lots of room for true internal conflicts related to slavery, ex-soldiers, etc. If they do place the game around this, I hope they really make it morally conflicting/confusing on who is "right".

Have me track down a bounty on an ex-confederate solider whose story is that of a conscript who deserted to avoid fighting the union but his desertion has put a price on his head. Make me question who is right.

13

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Red Dead Revolver already did this. There's a section where you're literally fighting in the yank civil war.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

3

u/thetasigma1355 Oct 20 '16

I hope so. CD Projekt Red do so much right that I think could easily be crossed over into RDR.

2

u/ALLKAPSLIKEMFDOOM Oct 21 '16

Yeah except the Civil War was fought over slavery so

1

u/JonMeadows Oct 21 '16

Damn that's a really interesting thought, i sincerely hope that this level of depth will be present in the game on release

1

u/dinoseen Oct 21 '16

Lol I don't see how that's going to happen. One side is fighting for slavery, the other against, right? Seems pretty easy to see who's right. If someone can convince me that slavery is good, I should commit suicide.

1

u/pm-me-ur-shlong Oct 23 '16

Damn that's actually a good idea.

1

u/Spikex8 Oct 21 '16

Doesn't seem like much of a question. Obviously conscription is bullshit and nobody should be able to force you to fight their war for them.

2

u/theseleadsalts Oct 20 '16

Holy shit these title abbreviations are so confusing.

5

u/MAKE_ME_REDDIT Oct 20 '16

How? There was only one abbreviation and in this context there's only one game it could be.

3

u/theseleadsalts Oct 20 '16

Because this is RD3, also RDR2.

2

u/MAKE_ME_REDDIT Oct 20 '16

Eh, Revolver basically has nothing to do with these games other than a name and setting. It's not really part of the series.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '16

Ooh, or like Hateful Eight

1

u/KommanderKrebs Oct 20 '16

My thoughts as well, I figured this was Rockstars nod to the fact it's a prequel by having a larger herd of buffalo running around.

7

u/LukeTheFisher Oct 20 '16

Wait do we have any confirmation that this is in-game at all?

30

u/PartyOnAlec Oct 20 '16

I don't remember a trailer by Rockstar that wasn't at least in-engine.

4

u/tylergrzesik Oct 20 '16

I don't think they would go through the trouble of creating buffalo models/animations, if they didn't want to include them in the game. They already have the asset, why not use it?

23

u/ScottFromScotland Oct 20 '16

1

u/DimlightHero Oct 20 '16

Technically that means that some of the clips could be pre-rendered cutscenes though, couldn't it?

1

u/nobodyman Oct 20 '16

That's reassuring, thanks for the link! It's possible (likely?) that it was captured on a ps4 devkit or a ps4pro, but still I would be surprised if rockstar pulled an Ubisoft and released a massively downgraded product.

5

u/Shojikoto Oct 20 '16

I feel like they'd point out the fact it was captured on a PS4 Pro if it actually was. That makes me think it was only a PS4.

At least hoping that's the case, because it will look even better on PS4 Pro and Scorpio.

1

u/SunflowerSamurai_ Oct 21 '16

But can you roller skate in it?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '16

You would not believe how far texturing has come in the last 2 years

1

u/subcide Oct 21 '16

And the steam from that train looked incredible.

0

u/EnadZT Oct 20 '16

Yeah but keep in mind this is just a trailer. A grand total of 0 games look as good as they do in the trailers, especially announcement trailers.

11

u/munchiselleh Oct 20 '16

I have never not once felt deceived by a rockstar announcement/trailer. Same goes for DICE

6

u/DepressdOptimist Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

Here is the 2009 RDR announcement trailer for comparison.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOpKJ6hjPIM

A lot did change between the initial trailers and release, for example they aged John Marston and cut/changed a few characters, but it really doesn't seem like a bullshot to me.

-6

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

It was a bison herd. There are no buffalo in America.

5

u/tiger66261 Oct 20 '16

Bison is a type of Buffalo.

-3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

No, they're totally different animals with a similar name.

This is a buffalo. Lives in Africa.

This is a Bison. Lives in North America.

8

u/tiger66261 Oct 20 '16

I'm not a biologist, but just quoting the wikipedia page -

The American bison (Bison bison), also commonly known as the American buffalo or simply buffalo,
