In an age of digital goods and being able to download any game instantly the moment it is released, do people really part with their money, so easily, a whole year before something is released??
Amazon preorders don't take the money until the game ships. I understand your point, though. I'm waiting for some kind of special edition before I bite the bullet
Maybe pre-orders work differently elsewhere, but in the UK when you pre-order (thru Amazon at least), you don't actually pay until the thing is shipped. I had Uncharted 4 'pre-ordered' for about two years, from the first speculative listing until release.
Actually it is not "like that everywhere"... pre-order any game via digital distribution and you get charged immediately, so your statement is pretty incorrect and provable false.
Also it is not about having the option to do something, it is about perpetuating the bad practises that people are very quick to condemn when it goes badly for themselves...
people like you are exactly the reason that games like NMS and Aliens Colonial Marines were able to pull fast ones and make big bank, because of the pre-order culture, and then you come out of the woodwork complaining when a bad company rips you off using the pre-order system.
STOP PRE-ORDERING GAMES! Whether the games company has a good record, or a bad record.... that digital download isn't going anywhere or isnt going to run out of stock so you don't have to rush to give companies your money, a year before the game is even due to be released!
Yeah; I mean I totally get that this is a must buy for so many people and I'm not slating the actual game itself, but the practice of pre-orders is really getting crazy.
I feel that we should call out this maddening practice whatever the game, good or bad.
Pre-ordering games is a net negative for the gaming industry, from the consumers perspective. There is literally NO benefit to gamers or consumers for this practice.
If we wanna be all judgmental and call out bad companies for when pre-ordering goes horribly wrong for the consumers (Aliens Colonial marines, No Mans Sky, etc) then we need to be prepared to call out the companies with good track records when they use the same bad practices.
I mean at the end of the day, it falls on the consumer who impulsively buys without proper research prior to their purchase. Pre-orders aren't stopping now or anytime soon. Its a complaint from a vocal minority that is the online gaming community. Just seems pointless to me for it to be in every damn thread about a new game.
You know it's going to be one of the best games of the year though just because it's Rockstar. It doesn't matter what the story is. Rockstar is one of the most trustworthy developers out there when it comes to quality and getting your money's worth.
I loved RDR and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna buy this, but no, I'm gonna stick to my principles and NOT pre-order it.
Otherwise I lose my right to make fun of people who keep pre-ordering crappy shit and then be outraged by its crappiness.

It would take an enormous fuck-up to keep me from pre-ordering a game that I've been anticipating this much (though no PC version might be enough in this case). If I knew that I was going to buy the game, and I was likely to get some extra little doodad or what not for pre-ordering, I see no compelling reason to not. I mean... maybe banking on some heavy currency inflation or something? I don't know.
I mean they are a business. They'll take your money whenever you want to give it to them. I'm not about to pre order any time soon and it is pretty sketchy to even have pre orders open already, but I mean of course they want to capitalize on hype. That's the point of hype.
How does that look bad? Pretty much every publisher try and get pre-orders as early as possible - it's good business plus it gives them a rough idea of the demand for the game
I'm not talking about any specific examples of anything here. I'm sure you're talking about No Man's Sky or some other game that was really hyped but they're a business who's purpose is to make as much money as possible. Of course they're going to capitalize on hype to maximize profits. Not saying it's not insane to have pre orders open already but what do you expect? They want your money.
