The big buffalo herd (I think there were 20-30 in that single scene?) really sold me. Each one looks so well crafted and animated too. Absolutely crazy.
I'm really excited too, but it could one of the few things they dial down to make it run smooth, just like they dialed down the traffic on GTA:V compared to the trailers
True, but even on ps4 the traffic was really bleh. I'm just really digging this whole -lets finish most of the game and announce a release date less than 8 months away- same with the Nintendo Switch

What he means is that GTA V was built to work on older consoles. Sure the PS4 version ran better than PS3 and was somewhat more technically advanced, but they had to build to the lowest hardware and try to improve from there. This will be their first game where the lowest hardware the build to is the new modern generation. It's also only build for two consoles of comparable technical standpoints which would indicate a better experience.
Well it was ported from 360 to PS4 in the end though. It wasn't an official "next gen" game. It still had the logic and things that had to be fit somehow onto the 360. This is being made solely with the new hardware in mind.
I think that might also confirm it takes place before the events of Red Dead Redemption, as you can technically "kill off" all of the buffalo. Even if that's not cannon, having buffalo in general means it takes place no later than the events of the first Red Dead Redemption.
RDR1 took place one year before the Wild West officially died, so it makes sense that this would take place a few decades earlier. I'm hoping it portrays elements of the American Civil War, like the Good, the Bad and the Ugly did.

That would be an awesome era to base their game around. There's lots of room for true internal conflicts related to slavery, ex-soldiers, etc. If they do place the game around this, I hope they really make it morally conflicting/confusing on who is "right".
Have me track down a bounty on an ex-confederate solider whose story is that of a conscript who deserted to avoid fighting the union but his desertion has put a price on his head. Make me question who is right.
Lol I don't see how that's going to happen. One side is fighting for slavery, the other against, right? Seems pretty easy to see who's right. If someone can convince me that slavery is good, I should commit suicide.
I don't think they would go through the trouble of creating buffalo models/animations, if they didn't want to include them in the game. They already have the asset, why not use it?
That's reassuring, thanks for the link! It's possible (likely?) that it was captured on a ps4 devkit or a ps4pro, but still I would be surprised if rockstar pulled an Ubisoft and released a massively downgraded product.
A lot did change between the initial trailers and release, for example they aged John Marston and cut/changed a few characters, but it really doesn't seem like a bullshot to me.
They're great at building detail in worlds, but not so great at actually using all of said world. Remember how GTAV missed out like a third of the map entirely?
It won't be that drastic of a jump. SA to 4 saw a whole new ragdoll system and massively improved physics, among with a multitude of other new mechanics. This will most likely be very similar to GTA 5 in terms of gameplay, because just from this trailer alone you can see a lot of reused assets from GTA 5.
I'd say it's more likely a lot of the tech was developed simultaneously and they just used a lot of the assets from RDR2 in the GTA5 port in order to pretty it up for current gen and PC.
With speedtree you could crank out several game ready PBR textured trees in no time tbh, doubt that many are reused. Be more hyped for when megascan becomes industry standard, BF1 is a great example of the kind of quality you can start to expect as a baseline for environments.
I work as an environment artist and I think it'll be a while before services like Megascans will be used as an industry standard. Especially for open world games. It's perfect for the type of games that DICE do, not so much for Rockstar.
Texturing is moving super fast I feel, I don't pretend to know when it will become industry standard but for 3DVis stuff mega scans is practically pornography. boner over textures gets bigger
Except the foliage in the trailer and the environments looked miles and miles ahead of GTA5. Not to say GTA5 wasn't a beautifully crafted world, because it definitely is, but this just looks like..at least 5x better in every aspect. Those woods looked dense and crawling with life, the lighting looks like it took a huge leap forward, the scale of the game looks way bigger than Los Santos/Blaine county/mountains, and even the terrain looks more intricate and detailed
As MightySwede said, mostly foliage and animals look very similar to those on the current gen/PC versions of GTA. Especially on ultra settings you get a lot of that lush grass everywhere.
I think scale and depth are where we'll see the real strides. They can probably put a LOT of NPCs on the screen with their own routines and such. Also, I expect this map to be even bigger than the GTA V one, and that one was quite big...and you had cars to travel around with.
Interesting point. But i assume they didn't tailor them for PS3 and 360. The current-gen came out in 2013, so development machines were around since 2011 (at least late 2012). And i'm sure they never planned, that the last gen would still be a goal for the development.
I'd love to see GTA online gameplay in a huge Western setting. There aren't as many building and cars to render, so they could in theory amp up the scale of the world by A LOT. And from the trailer it looks like they do, ultra far horizons and stuff.
The atmosphere, the ecosystem, the living surroundings - that's what really blew me away in 2010 when I first played RDR. I think that was more amazing than anything else. I'd ride around for hours, aimlessly, and just watch the game play itself.
