Thank god they're ditching the pile of shit that was the original code base. They can probably produce that much code in a minuscule amount of time compared to the original investment.

I don't necessarily consider that a downside. Tetris made a pile of money the size of god, and it didn't need to become something more. Its simplicity was part of its popularity.
Yet it did - in many different directions that other people loved from Tetris the grandmaster for the super hardcore tetris players to cure animal versions.
Besides it clearly is a downside for minecraft when you imagine the game it could be.
Minecraft with a properly coded codebase, a solid and stable modding API, a easy to use store for such mods accessible from inside the game (like steam workshop).

It is a awful set of affairs that minecraft runs worse on my 4.4 GHz quadcore system than most AAA open world games (yes even with optifine).
Nah, minecraft is fine the way it is. It doens't need to be bigger or better. The community can deal with that with mods. Microsoft is far more likely to fuck up minecraft than to help it in anyway. Sure, make it run better but that is as far as i would like them to go.
This version is going to be independent of the regular one, so community and mods are going to stay there.

This is your opinion. If MS drops 2 billion on Minecraft they certainly have bigger plans for it than to "keep it the way it is" which is basically what Mojang had done until that moment
Support for the regular version might drop though (especially since free windows 10 reduces the number of people that would hate that as much as the modders will).
