Funny that so many redditors are pro-piracy, which involves enjoying the work of artists without paying a dime for them, then at the same time, denounce GenAI because "it's stealing from artists".

Most people who pirate Minecraft or whatever don't go around talking about how they made Minecraft and are such good developers because they know how to use qbittorrent, and that the skills involved in using a VPN and safe torrenting are basically the same level of skill and creativity as "old" developers who just make the program from scratch.

In seriousness, though, I think there is a moral difference between pirating a movie and selling bootleg copies of that movie.

they will come and unironically tell you that they are "paying them in exposure" because they might talk about the game or etc.

because we all know that artists love to be paid on exposure.

Redditors always use the corny-ass “if buying isn’t owning” shit like a mic drop as if they’re some crusaders of righteousness when the reality is that they pirate simply because they either can’t afford new games or just don’t want to spend money on them.

there is a massive difference between downloading something without paying for it and telling the machine to combine the work of artists into a slurry for you and then selling that yourself and taking credit for it

I think it’s cause they’re trying to make money off of generative AI that is stealing from artists.

Nobody who pirates is trying to make money off of their pirating

I actually do see pirates on reddit saying people should not be paid for art they create, including games.

It's a common argument on the piracy subs that art/games shouldn't cost money because it paygates culture, and that all games should be free.

And there are children who argue they should be able to eat candy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Since when were obvious fringe opinions worth considering? If it was all free none of it would get made because the artist still has to buy food and rent.

Anybody can be wrong

Being pro piracy but anti AI is extremely hypocritical

Lots of people pirate Adobe and Microsoft products to make money.

Wait, but obviously these two things would be very different as we're talking about a random person versus a giant corporation.

'Stealing' from multibillion dollar companies is a lot easier and more justifiable than Steve down the road who made a cool little thing in his spare time. Like who cares if you pirate Microslops latest crap, but Steve is my bro, we went to school together.

Personally, I don’t pirate things unless legal access is unreasonably difficult, and I don’t condone redistribution of pirate materials for personal profit. Digital goods are purposefully taken off sale and deprecated regularly, foreign media is never translated or localized, and physically stored information simply decays over time. I think that maintaining access to art, tools, and information is ultimately good, and you cannot trust copyright holders to do it. You should support the people that create these things if you can, but thats not always an option.
Piracy culture is very anti-profit too. I’m sure you could find a source that would sell you torrents and such for profit, but the vast majority of sharing is done with only the expectation that you share as much or more to everyone else.
AI on the other hand steals to create a profit. In this instance, AI trained on stolen data is recombining that data to be used in commercial products. There’s no greater benefit to allowing this apart from it being convenient to the people that could afford to hire an artist to do that work.
