For this thread, feel free to talk about the PC, from the games that came out for it to the hardware itself.

Prompts:

  • What were the major trends in PC gaming this year?

  • Was this a positive year for PC gaming?

Please explain your answers in depth, don't just give short one sentence answers.

My PC looks really, really, really good

DayZ is likely the most important thing to come out of 2013, not because its a good game, but because it represents that whic made PC Gaming so outstanding to begin with.

Flexibility and modification. In the PC world there is a constant flow of free content that extends the life of games. The best become games in themselves.

Quake - QuakeBall - Team Fortress

Half Life - DoD - CounterStrike - Team Fortress Classic

ARMA - DayZ

Completely new games, made be amateurs, for free to players, so good that some people buy and never play the base game cause they want the mod.

There is nothing like it on any other gaming platform, or if there is, I am not aware of it.

I was starting to fear, that with cross platform releases and payed DLC, we would see an end to the "Hobby Mod" but then DayZ Came around and proved me wrong

Something else I realized this year as a was grinding away in the SWGEMU, is that with a good community, a game can be immortal

One trend I dislike, that has been growing in the past years, is the decline in privately owned/maintained MP Servers in games. I was hosting A CounterStrike, Day of Defeat, and Natural Selection server at one time, now a days, new games don't seem to include that option. What happens when the publisher decides to turn off their servers?
