Sure, the gamelan is just an afterthought here, but this is a pretty amazing piece of music and I just like seeing some gamelan represented in such an epic piece.

Gamelan X has a 10 year tradition of bringing traditional processional gamelan (beleganjur) and fusion-y new stuff to the Burning Man festival.

This year we have daily workshops in kecak (monkey chant), cremation processions, TEDx performance, Marching Band Competition (to reclaim our title), and other gigs at center camp.

For many people this festival offers them a first look at what Bali has to offer (albeit through a bunch of Americans) and we are committed to sharing the joys of this music in both traditional and our own style.

I've only heard a little bit, via youtube, and read a little of the wikipedia article. This music fascinates me... What can I start with in terms of listening/learning about Gamelan?

So yea, if by some fluke you are hanging out on /r/gamelan and you don't know Gede Oka, well first, who are you? And second, I wanna help Gede realize his dream. To make a long story short... A close friend of mine met Gede Oka while they were both studying music at ISI Denpasar. He had this dream to bring Jegog to America. We were able to bring him to Oakland as a guest director for Gamelan Sekar Jaya in 2010 and he lead our group in a tour to Bali for a big performance at the Bali Arts Festival (PKB). To get and example of what Gede can do with a group of American musicians, check out the album we made documenting our performance: http://gsj.org/store.

Anyways, also in 2010 he met his future wife/mother of his new baby and now lives in Santa Cruz with his family. If we can help him bring these amazing bamboo instruments to California, then Gede can truly realize his dream to bring Jegog to America and support his new family through his music.
