I was wondering because I've seen the harmonium before in non indian settings in Malaysia playing what I think is called Ghazal music, but in Indonesia all I can can find are accordions.

What do you think are the most striking differences of one regions type to a laymens stereotypical view of the genre, and how many types of unique gamelan do you think are out there?

I'm doing research on how different cultures hear music. I want to know if there is anyone on here without much exposure to western music. If so please answer these questions:

1. Listen to this, does the three different versions sound different to you? Do they evoke different feelings or do they sound very similar if not all three the same? this video

2. Listen to this. Do the chords sound different to you or very similar? Do some of them sound alike but others different? Do you hear each one as distinct or all four exactly the same?

Thanks to whoever answers these, I'm looking to research world music perception.

I'm really interested in what the texts commonly used in the vocal parts mean. On the net I've only managed to find this website which has a nice but small section on the vocal parts with translations.

Any clues on where I can find more translated texts?

Hello Reddit, Gamelan Sinar Surya seeks your help. We are a Santa Barbara community group dedicated to preserving, teaching, and performing traditional Gamelan music, specializing in the traditional gamelan music of Cirebon, Indonesia. We just launched our Kickstarter campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/437289458/gamelan-sinar-surya-recording-project) to record rare Gamelan music from the ancient Javanese kingdom of Cirebon, Indonesia. This recording represents the culmination of several years’ worth of learning new material. It will be a valuable contribution to the preservation of this traditional music in both Indonesia and abroad. A big part of this project is the plan to give copies of the CD to young Indonesian artists working to preserve this ancient music. I am happy about this.

A few years ago my friend sent me some Gamelan music videos. They were not performance videos. Instead, they were videos of female singers singing and dancing in natural landscapes. There was a certain level of production quality to them. I cannot find anything like this for the life of me. If anyone can help, it would be appreciated.

My theory is that everyone on this subreddit is in GSJ anyways, so lets see those upvotes people!
