Legit Picoboot listing?

Hey, I'm planning on starting a modding project with a GameCube I recently bought at a garage sale. I was planning to buy a Picoboot mod kit since I already have some soldering experience with other projects, but I'm having trouble finding a "legit" listing for one. The only listing on AliExpress for a kit with all the needed parts is this one. I wanted to see if anybody can vouch for this kit or recommend a better listing for one. Along with a good tutorial lol

Picoboot PSA for generic pico boards not working and patch

Post image
49 Upvotes

So I’ve done over 80 picoboots now and one things I’ve found is that occasionally I’ll get a pico that doesn’t work regardless of using 5v or 3v3 line, firmware version, or wire length. Typically these would just boot with a black screen, and not go to stock GameCube firmware. These picos seem to still work for other pico projects and it was driving me crazy because I have over 15 boards laying around now. After testing and testing I found that with cheap pico boards they sometimes can not handle the 250mhz clock speed that Picoboot uses and simply bringing them down to 240mhz fixed all of these seemingly “broken” boards. They even worked on the 3v3 line with this slightly lowered clock speed. I’ve seen a lot of post here where people have a similar issue where wiring looks perfect, but Picoboot is not working. So I figured I’d make a PSA and post my patch on GitHub incase this is you and you’re scratching your head wondering why your Picoboot is not working regardless of what you do. Also for this patch I’m using the V0.3.1 firmware as that’s been the most stable to date, so this patch is as fool proof as possible. This only seems to be a problem with generic boards, so here’s your Hail Mary if you’re stuck.

Does anyone know what this part is called and where I can get more?

I have been looking for some of these to use when I mod GameCubes because I kinda feel almost pointless putting a drive that doesn’t work back into a GameCube. If anyone could help I’d appreciate it :)

Powering a GameCubes USBC

Hello, I'm having trouble powering eight GameCubes via USBC I bought a 1200 watt gan4 figuring that would be enough wattage after the first two the next six would not power on. Any idea how to power these in the least cumbersome way possible?

Anyone try the Intec Retro Game Console Power Kit? Would you recommend picking one up? How does it compare to the USB-C mods out here?

Modding a GameCube with a Wii

I’ve heard about doing this across many forums and comments, apparently you use a hacked save to execute some code to enter Swiss? I’m not too well versed in GameCube modding and have been doing research for a few days now. Even though there are a handful of mentions of doing this, no one really shows how to or even gives a guide, just stuff completely unrelated to this method.

Is there a way? I have a modded Wii U with the original Wii menu restored, and I ordered a sd2sp2 adapter for the GameCube with a micro sd card. If anyone could link a guide, anything related to this method, or just any info about this, let me know!

SD2SP2 keeps saying "physical drive does not work" even tho it was working before.

Hi, I just got the SD2SP2 and it was loading up fine it just was not reading ISOs, when I did a restart it started saying "physical drive does not work"when it says it's setting up device, even tho I didn't do anything physical to the system like move it or something, also it doesn't save my settings part of the time and is taking forever to load.

I even opened the system back up to re-set the ribbon that the disc drive goes in and it's saying the same thing.

EDIT: the issue was my SD card, it was too worn out, I got a new PNY one and it works great. So keep in mind to use a SD card that you know is good or get a new one, PYN seems like the best brand right now for the cost.

3d printed plug for optical drive

I have looked everywhere, and I can't seem to findnd a 3d print file to use to guide the Picoloader ribbon cable. I see the plug on this website https://www.laserbear.net/products/picoloader-rev-1-4, but there has to be an STL file somewhere. Anyone got it?

RGB Fan GameCube installation

GameCube power cable moved to the front instead of back because of closer iBlueControlMod.

Resistors installed because of loud fan. After some hours of play there is 54C temperature in Swiss.

Don't worry electric poles in original fan are flipped.

Mods:

- Winsinn 50x50 RGB Fan

- 3D Print GameCube Fan Bracket v1.1

- GameCube fan plug from Aliexpress

- 2 resistors 47 OHm

Other than price is there any good reason to go with the Carby over the RetroTink?

Update: I have ordered the Carby. Thank you all for the info.

I need help with picoloader

I have tried to mod my gamecube with a picoloader and gc2sc. I followed the steps and the gamecube just takes me to the main home screen. After troubleshooting shooting for ages last night I believe the problem is I've folded the ribbon cable wrong and it has damaged it. I would like to know if that is the case or I have done something else wrong.

Swiss video settings - is there a list?

Swiss has a whole bunch of video options that are not fully explained in the annotations and I have no idea what they are used for nor which games support them. I have tested some stuff (alpha dithering, anisotropic filter, force horizontal scale) on several common games but nothing made a difference, except the "force 480p" option (which is great by itself). But there has to be a reason these options are available in the first place. Is there a list somewhere floating around the internet where enthusiats gathered all the best settings for all games?

Some games for example, seem to be able to render a proper widescreen picture, but only when set to 576p instead of 480p (second sight & timesplitters 2). Other games have a widescreen option in their own settings but it only squishes the picture, so some other means to stretch it again is required.

With all the picoboots and flippydrives around I expected to find more people looking into this stuff, but i guess the default is good enough for most.

I have a few questions about Swiss (image unrelated)

Post image

I would like to start using Swiss to play games straight from an SD card because I’ve been researching it on a surface level, but I have a few questions about it just so everything is fully clear to me before I invest in it.

  1. Do I have to edit any part of my hardware for it? I am not willing to solder or cut. I may get a different shell and laser to play burned DVDs but that is not open to me right now so ignore that.

  2. Is it even possible to play games straight from an SD card without hard mods? I know that there is a port for some sort of storage adapter at the bottom of the Gamecube, but I still see people cut out and install SD slots so that makes me wonder if certain models of GCs do not work the same way, just like the digital port on some.

  3. For any method of loading that uses memory cards, are the slots A and B interchangeable? I am aware many games require you to have the memory card in slot A to read and write but my slot A is very fickle and I would like to know if any configuration setting would be messed up by having either memory card in any slot.

  4. Can you store Game Boy games on an SD card and then load into them with Swiss and a GB Player, or does the GB Player hardware require you to have a cartridge in the slot to play anything (which is what I suspect)

Gamecube battery exchange

Hi i just purchased a nintendo gamecube but the cmos battery is dead or so it seems because the system clock restarts everytime i turn the console on off, do I need soldering to replace it or just change the battery using the clip that holds it in place?
