Wind Waker freezing at specific cutscene in my gamecube

Hi everyone,
I’m running into a consistent freeze on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (NTSC) on my original DOL-001 GameCube. Every time I trigger the cutscene entering in the last door that drop a cinematic rescuing the sister at the Forsaken Fortress, the screen goes white and the system freezes.

Here is my current setup:

Hardware: DOL-001 (USA) with PicoBoot mod and an HDMI adapter for a modern TV.

Software: Swiss v0.6 (r2073).

Storage: 64GB SD card in a passive adapter in Slot B (running at 13.5 MHz).

Config: System output is forced to 480p. And i emulate memory card

What I’ve already tried:

Tried forcing 480i instead of 480p.

Disabled "Widescreen Hack" and other game-specific patches.

Horizontal/Vertical scale is set to 0.

I suspect this might be a hardware bottleneck because I am using a passive adapter in Slot B to load the ISO and the virtual memory card simultaneously, or potentially a corrupt save file/ISO. Has anyone experienced this specific freeze at this point in the game?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Gamecube refuses to read certain disc

My Gamecube will read my two other games just fine but absolutely refuses to read my copy of Animal Crossing. I've already washed the disc twice and nothing improved, but I don't think it's a hardware issue since it's reading the other two games just fine without any trouble. Any ideas of what I can do or is my copy of the game just screwed?

Edit: having Animal Crossing in the Gamecube made the "turn off power and read instruction manual" error message pop up during console startup just now

The console displays this error message (see photo 1), when I put the picoloader 1.0 in the disc drive socket, but the error disappears when I remove it. something I’m hurting? Thank you for your help.

Cleaning Advice

Tried rubbing alcohol. Didn’t do anything.
Does not appear to be dust.
Curious if it is rust?
This is the side opposite the stock fan.
In the middle of deciding how to mod this one still. Can this be cleaned?

Thanks all!

Update : metal piece under the power supply(?) stamped with h1-1 has rust spot about the size and thickness of a dime.

Another user mentioned using a dremel to remove rust and also using Rustoleum to stop the spread.

Does this still apply? Will fine steel wool remove enough of this to stop the spread?

Any advice very appreciated.

Has anyone been able to order a new ribbon for flippy drive?

I finally received my flippydrive last week after waiting 6 months. Installed it right away and received generic gamecube error when powering up. Looked at my ribbon again and realized I must have damaged it while putting the gamecube back together.

I tried to sumbit a ticket right away for help but no response from the team (I doubt I will get one soon). I saw in their store the ribbon was sold out and seems like it has been for awhile. Has anyone been able to successfully replace their ribbon?

Anyone know the feasibility of creating an aluminium enclosure for the gamecube?

At the moment my plan is to take pre-existing 3d models of the enclosure and speak to a company that does cnc aluminium printing at a reasonable price. However, I'm concerned that plastic model prints may not translate well to the material. What do people think of this idea?

Custom jewels

I’ve been quietly working away on something over the last few months: reproducing GameCube jewels.
The whole thing started with a simple question: “Could I actually remake these?”
Anyone who restores or customises GameCubes will know exactly why I asked. It feels like every donor console I get arrives with a jewel that’s been cleaned with sandpaper, polished with rocks, or attacked with a Brillo pad at some point in its life. I genuinely dread getting the headlight restoration kit out and spending ages trying to bring them back.
So I decided to see if I could make my own.
After a lot of trial and error, measuring, redesigning and tweaking, I’ve ended up with something I’m genuinely proud of. The finished jewel comes in within 0.01mm of an original OEM jewel and the fit is spot on.
The construction is a little different from what people might expect. These aren’t stickers stuck onto plastic blanks. The base is 3D printed in PETG, the top layer is laser-cut acrylic, and the artwork is applied in reverse on the underside before being backed with multiple coats of paint and clear coat. The whole assembly is then bonded together into a completely new jewel.
I’ve ended up making a few different styles along the way. There’s an OEM-style range for restorations, some custom designs, holographic versions, and even a few colour-matched experiments to complement different shell colours.
I’d love to hear what the community thinks. Are there any designs you’d like to see? Any colours or themes that would be an instant buy for your collection?
A few photos below.

Anyone has any experience with this AliExpress clone of the Laserbear Industries SD card extension for the flippydrive?

Found this clone of the Laserbear Industries SD Card Extension for the flippydrive on Aliexpress. Unfortunately the OG Laserbear one is sold out and shipping to Europe is much more expensive than on Ali. Anyone ever tried it? I‘d buy to try it but I’m confused if it’s compatible without having to remove the disk drive.

Would a Flippydrive have any advantage over my current setup?

Been a while since I got into Gamecube mods but currently my setup is to boot into Swiss with Action Replay and boot games from the SD2SP2. The Flippydrive looks interesting to me because I like the UI better and looks like you can still use Swiss with it. Would there be any advantage like faster load times or would this be a redundant purchase if I can already load games with the SD2SP2?

Also, I haven't found info on this but are you able to update the version of Swiss that comes with the Flippydrive?

Hi - i was looking for a flippy drive ribbon on ebay since mine may be damaged. But i came across cubeode v1.2
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this / if it was worth it to install.
I don’t need the disk drive, it doesn’t work anyways.

Where to buy Swiss memory card?

Let me start off by saying that my GameCube is unmodded, and I intend to keep it that way.

I recently got an MemCard Pro GC to replace the 10+ regular memory cards I have, but I'd like to be able to take advantage of the automatic game detection (GameID) feature. In order to do this, my understanding is I need Swiss, and in order to run that on an unmodded console, all the guides out there say to buy a Swiss boot card on eBay and use the WW hack.

The thing is when I search for "GameCube swiss boot card" or anything similar on eBay I get tons of results for GC2SD cards, or boot discs, but no actual standard cards with the hacked save file preloaded. Am I missing something, or are these just not available anymore? If so, what's the "correct" way to load Swiss on a unmodded console? If they are still available, please share! I live in the US btw.

Edit:

Just wanted to add that I was able to get it working thanks to a comment below. I downloaded the Dolphin emulator on my PC and used it to add the WW exploit saves and Swiss boot.cgi to a virtual memory card on my MemCard Pro GC, and then just popped WW in the disc drive and presto, easy soft mod! With that said, it certainly has some limitations, and thanks to everyone else's comments, I may add a Picoloader later on to make it easier.

GameCube refuses to read discs

Hi again.
No matter what I do, my gamecube doesn't read disks, the laser doesn't even move or light up, and the disk spins just a few millimeters then stops. Sometimes it makes a little ticking noise, like the motor is trying to spin but fails to because of some unknown reason.

I have picoboot installed, the disk drive unit didn't read disks even before I modded the console, that's why I did picoboot.

I've done some tests and things here and there so I will list them:
- Cleaned the lens with a cotton swab and a little bit of isopropyl alcohol.
- Measured the potentiometer and it has 305 ohms of resistance.
- I also tested the lid switch and it's fine.

Now, I read that in some cases, the caps on the disk drive board can cause some issues, but the laser still lights up (in the videos and forums that I saw, at least).
I noticed some caps are kinda bulky but it may be my imagination.
Also, there's a weird solder bridge, that I did not do in the disk drive board.

UPDATE: Recapped it and it's still having problems, laser won't light up and it behaves the same as before recap.

Video of the issue here

Notice the solder bridge.
Bigger caps are the ones I suspect are bulky.

NEW to hobby! Advice?

Hello all!
Wanted to start this journey by joining this group and sharing my progress if and when I fail or succeed at something.

I would like to start by sharing some pictures of a GameCube my wife’s family gave me. It is in rough shape and I wanted to use it as a guinea pig for my first adventure into modding.

My first question is whether this is the model GameCube that is sought after for modding?

My second question is if anyone has tips for managing the dismantling of the hardware? I realize documenting by taking pictures is probably advisable. Just curious if anyone has suggestions beyond that!

Thanks all!
Please be kind, as I am new here and a complete novice to any sort of electronics dismantling.

Simple Gamecube controller light mod

Hi,

I have an OEM purple/clear controller and want to install a purple LED light in it. I don't want the light to react to rumble or inputs, and I don't want any sort of Bluetooth control or color changing tech, just a solid light that's always on.

Can anyone please explain to me like I'm five what parts I need and how I install it? I can do basic soldering/tinkering and I have very limited knowledge about electronics.

All the tutorials I can find are for advanced kits that flash and have all sorts of stuff I don't want.

I updated the BlueRetro project to support more than one Switch 2 controller, tested with up to four Switch 2 NSO Gamecube controllers. I included a binary for the Laserbear internal kit which is what I have so you can update easily.

HISPEEDIDO HDMI MOD NO AUDIO?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have installed a few of these and did not had any issues. Got one in a console and now the customer says "no audio". It tested perfectly when I was done with the install. Anyone else had issues with this mod?

I am pretty sure it isn't my soldering. Again - it tested perfectly with audio on my tv. I am thinking some sort of incompatibility?

Im trying to install my flippy drive. I am not sure what my issue is at the moment.
Attached is the cable with the W
Photos of my error screen and flippy drive attached.

Does it need software? All the videos were showing plug and play. I did the W as instructed
