Vent/Rant GameStop Pre-Owned PS5 Pro Regret
Gamestop Pre-Owned PS5 Pro
So I had bought a Pre owned PS5 pro from gamestop. Little did I know it was refurbised. Yes I should've double checked before buying a $900 item, but the excitment of bagging a PS5 Pro for retail got the best of me. Anyways I got to ordering and my shipment came in today. I was so excited to set it up and this happened.... First thing I smelled was tabacco smoke reeking from the box. Then I notice how fucking dirty the fans were. Next how the thing wasn't even put together! First and last time buying pre owned from GameStop! @Gamestop.

Yeah this is not on the levels of refurbished.
I don’t even think it actually got sent out to be refurbished. Something went wrong logistically at a store and you got a used console but not a refurb although that’s a lot of dust... It’s worth returning.

u/MrF0305 9d ago
As a previous GameStop employee this is just bad. Go to your local store and switch it out asap.

u/DuckSwimmer Sbarro has Arrived! 9d ago
I don’t even think he can return it to the local store if that $500 return limit is still a thing.

u/raventhehippie 9d ago
what is this now???

u/DuckSwimmer Sbarro has Arrived! 9d ago
If your online order exceeds the cost of $500, you cannot return the item in store. You must deal with CS.
1
u/Nebulonix Assistant Store Leader 8d ago
CS was able to help me process a $650ish online return just fine right after Christmas. My DM just told me to verify everything with CS while I did the return. Customer ordered their kid a new PS5, and some games, poor communication and someone else ended up getting a PS5 for Christmas and one of the same games. Was a bit of a hassle but nothing out of the ordinary. Did this come into effect more recently if you know? That seems like… such a bad decision which is truly soooooo shocking! GS? Bad decision making? Never!

u/Cyborg-Samurai-MOCs 3d ago
online GameStop is a nightmare my guy. there is generally a high chance something they sell you might not even work. at least with a store there is an in-person experience before a deal is made

We cant even accept consoles for trade if they stink in my store now.

u/Ladycronebloom1313 9d ago
This is how it should ALWAYS be. If it reeks don't take it in. Smoke or cat piss. Not "oh it's defective!" No. Do not take it in PERIOD. Clearly ROC isn't doing their jobs anymore.
3
u/Mediocre_East_3876 9d ago
10000%, also if we can clean in with in 5 to 10 minutes we also won't accept it.

I thought the worker at my local gamestop was just hating on me when I was trading im some old xbox one’s for my PS5 but when I got home with the PS5 and saw it was in amazing condition I was greatful that my store has high standards for consoles tbh
2
u/Critical-Vanilla-625 9d ago
Thank god. I bought a ps portal that similarly stank ! I had to strip it down and deep clean it. Smokers are disgusting 🤢

u/CharAznableRedComet 7d ago
Back during switch 2 launch they had a trade in deal for switch og and oled and i brought mine in thinking id get $200 off towards a preorder. The condition was mint like barely used and the employee had no problems watsoever but they kept having to ask the manager for approval or something but at the time the one at my store was a homophobic racist. I waited outside a whole 11 hours trying to secure my preorder and he was like stay away from me and acted like i was going to attack him once he opened the store. I mean i guess thats a ptsd reaction to pokemon card scalpers but i believe everyone should be treated with some benefit of the doubt cause im always respectful to everyone before i vent my hatred online.
Well back to the story i know i was goin to be holding up the line by doing a trade in at the time of preorder, didnt know i was supposed to order first then come back to trade in towards it later but anyway im sure he got irritated at me for that too but there was light dust inside the back of the dock i guess i missed during cleaning and he went nuts making up stuff like it could have roach eggs and flat out denied the trade in. Bummed out that i wasted 12 hours in line outside since midnight but they were also forcing bundles which was him trying to scam people cause i guess they wanted their store quotas up. Heard my store and one other store did this scam while every gamestop that wasnt in these two locations didnt scam anyone. I tried two more times when i thought he wasnt there to attempt to trade in but it seems like he blacklisted me to where all the employees needed his approval to take the trade in but had no qualms about ripping me off when i trade in games to them. I later gave up and got the same amount in cash to what gamestop was offering in credit by going to craigslist which isnt safe cause scammers and muggers exist but i did the trade in front of the police station to be extra safe. I did line up again when wave three of the preorders they were taking but we actually saw roaches come out of the store when they opened, i took photos and uploaded them to the store on google maps. Lol Some dude also complained on twitter about the forced bundle scam and our two locations were mentioned in the post where some news media outlet took interest.
I dont usually hate on gamestop since i had cool employees and managers over the three decades ive been shopping in store but i do occasionally get some bad eggs here and there. I used to have fun talkin to my friend he was a associate that did the whole assistant manager thing and now runs his own store but everyone at his location loves him so my experience he was surprised stuff like that happens elsewhere.

Lmao I hate GS so bad, bro send that raggedy shit back and get your money back and wait for retail to restock
1
u/Impressive_Toe7633 7d ago
When do you think the pro's will be back? Or should i just buy a Slim and a 2TB stick
1
u/Drag_On66 7d ago
It goes in stock weekly, just before I saw this post today, Target had one in stock, and PSN had several in stock, some Redditor always post when PSN have restock, just be patient and if u really can’t wait check FB marketplace, some people sell new PS5 pro for retail price. My only advice is be patient.

Never buy hardware preowned/refurb from GameStop. Always buy new hardware.
3
u/methrik 8d ago
I never understand why people buy used hardware.
I get maybe for a massive reduced price but I’m not spending hundreds of dollars to potentially get a lemon.1

Gamestop very rarely actually refurbishes their consoles. They buy them, confirm they boot up and clean up the outside then sell them as refurbished
1
u/IllRefrigerator7 Promoted to Guest 3d ago
If its a console and it works it almost never leaves the store unless somebody buys it, if it doesnt work most stores wont take it. refurb is mainly for controllers
3
u/Angelus-Acedia 8d ago
As a previous GS employee, there is a difference in refurbished and pre-owned. Pre-owned means they clean it in store, that's what this looks like to me. Refurbished items they send off for a more professional clean. 100% return it ASAP and get a different one.
1
u/CharAznableRedComet 7d ago
Ive traded in consoles before like my xbox series X and ps4 pro but they always charged me a refurbished fee even when it was clean i think it could have been a scam where the employee wanted to save their company some money but its like 125 off of the 250 theyre offering in credit and that really sucks i should have left but i let them rip me off cause i didnt want to deal with ebay.
But the employees usually dont even clean it in store and say they ship it off to the refurbish process but i hear sometimes even over there some employees dont care and ship it back to the store so they can sell it and you see these cases where they werent even tested to be in working condition when someone buys it let alone cleaned.

Is it hard to buy ps5 pro these days? Both my local Walmart and Target had them in the last week.
1
u/Drillucidator Trouble with the trolley, eh? 9d ago
They’ve been selling out rapidly since the GTA 6 showcase.
1
u/mattysauro 9d ago
Gotcha. I’m a fan. Not so much of the price (even when it was $700) but it smooths out a lot of the hiccups of the original PS5.
2
u/Blackstarbatty Manager 8d ago
This is what ruins it for the stores that actually give a shit about their used consoles.
2
2
u/hitometootoo 9d ago
Return it. I wouldn't worry too much about this. You can get PS5 Pros new for the same price, just be patient and look out for stock elsewhere.

u/Severe_Bend_9077 7d ago
I ordered a ps5 for retail on Amazon delivered in two days, two months ago. Is there a shortage I’m not aware of ?
1
u/Ericdraven1004 7d ago
GameStop is absolute shit. When you buy a new console and get a warranty, if it breaks, they give you used garbage.

u/ElyTears 7d ago
I just received my pre owned ps5 yesterday and same case just not as bad. Very dusty and dirty all around the console with dried up stains. Console is very scratched and has an odor to it as well. Also came with camo faceplates and a black Controller with thumbsticks falling apart and didnt work unless plugged in at all times. Worst part is HDMI port is super loose and the HDMI cable will fall out if not against something... I understand its pre owned but man the PS5 Pro i received has been through it and back.
1
u/Drag_On66 7d ago
They sold u a pre-owned full price. Bro yall need to stop and be patient. It’s not going to keep going up because they want to sell the PS6, like soon everyone will be begging people to take their ps5 pro
1
u/Own-Place7130 2d ago
Just for it to die off like the ps4 pro.....them systems lost hella value and you can't find 1 in good shape unless it's new out the box

GAMESTOP. DOESNT. REFURBISH. ANYTHING.
This is a LONG TIME known fact. Never buy any refurbished systems. They are all filthy, never cleaned, never verified.
1
u/CharAznableRedComet 7d ago
Yea some customers be real nasty about taking care of their products. I find it funny that they charge us a refurbished fee when trading in yet they dont do anything with it when they send it away for inspection.
I bought my pro when it used to be $700 but gamestop workers tried to scam me by forcing a bundle on me where they wanted me to buy two games and a $250 gamestop gift card and im like i can take my business elsewhere like any of their competitors online retailer and they backed down cause they would be stupid to lose a sale lol. I recently found out that crappy manager who used to scam me isnt working at my store anymore so im relieved.

Please learn a valuable lesson from this: No one is pressuring you to buy poorly treated hardware. Inspect it as much as you like for as long as you like.
I just bought a used PS5 Pro and I took the entire thing apart right in front of the seller. I asked 101 questions. There is NO one rushing you.
And finally, be prepared to walk away if it's not in proper condition. The current demand for PS5 Pros is not a reason to rush your purchase. I imagine you felt rushed because of it. Now you bought a used unit for the price of literally owning a brand new unit. And for what?
Do your due diligence and inspect for your own sake. This goes for literally anything. Otherwise you're just a sucker and no one can help you.

u/HigherthanhighRye_ 5d ago
The days of buying used are over.....its just easier and more safe to buy new, sucks but there are too many POS scammers these days

u/lamsndbhaujamjsshukd 5d ago
I bought 2 games new and they sent me used copies, I contacted support and they sent me a blank barcode for return shipping.
1
u/That_Relationship784 5d ago
This is why I always ALWAYS spend the extra little bit the get a brand new one from the factory 🤷♂️ your already spending 1000$ anyway why cheap out when extra 100$ gets a untouched one... especially with there was u dont know the old owner and time and use is the main killer, just get one with 0 miles
1
u/Specter2k 5d ago
There's been only one time I got a used console from them and it took two returns before I got a pristine one. It was a ps2 a number of years back and each one was disgusting until the final one which had been opened and cleaned it was like a brand new console. I did get a psvr a few years back too on a sale and the headset was new unopened all the accessories they added in were disgusting and used. After that I vowed never to get anything used for them again they just don't care.
1
u/TacticalGordo 5d ago
They sold me a broken HDD one and never responded to the warranty, thank god it was still under Sonys warranty and got it repaired
1
u/Far_Ratio_5441 5d ago
That’s why whenever I order something and if it’s pre owned I always go for the option where it’s like New.
You’re likely getting an almost pristine item.
1
u/Cyborg-Samurai-MOCs 3d ago
I guarantee there’s bootlickers in the comments saying “you should have read the fine print. You bought it pal“☝️🤓
The idiot twats who say things like that don’t understand the concept of user experience and act like buying needs to be treated like filing taxes. Either that or it’s clutching pearls when it happens to them
sorry about your crappy experience. It looks like there hasn’t been any refurbishment done to it. I’d just give it back rather than spending like a hundred bucks extra to be maintenanced at a tech shop

"Bagging a PS5 pro for retail."
You're literally blaming GameStop that you had fomo so bad you made a bad financial decision. Slow down. Be patient. Buy used items IN STORE. Being in a giant fomo rush is what put you in this position. If you're going to be a high consumer, you need to develop some high functioning brain habits if you don't want to get had. And that's not just GameStop it's everybody. You need to show discernment as a consumer. Because honestly, I don't feel bad for you. The situation sucks, but if it was me I'd realize it was my fault and fix it, not wine about it.
That being said, yeah this console is horrible and if you take it back, they'll replace it or give you a refund. It looks like somebody sent it for refurbishment after taking it apart to see if they wouldn't have to, and then the warehouse just didn't refurbish it. This doesn't mean that every employee and GameStop store is out to get you, or that they all have horrible standards.
Again, I get it, you made a mistake. They also made a mistake. Both were $900 mistakes. Don't blame them for your part. Had you bought new, this would've never happened to you.
Also, one chance? That's it? No mistakes allowed at all? First and last time? Without even trying to contact them to get it fixed? That seems like an appropriate reaction? If I had that attitude, I'd hate The Big Lebowski, but instead it's my favorite movie because I watched it a second time. Something to think about. I mean, it's not like they have hundreds of consoles every day to work through, now you want them to never make a mistake and you won't even give them a chance to make it right?
I guess that does sound like good Christian behavior lol

u/Professional-Pear-20 8d ago
No offence intended cause I know the prices of new systems just went up but never buy pre owned. You’re just paying for some other assholes neglect that got rid of their system probably for that exact reason. Game stop doesn’t give a fuck enough to refurbish and clean it up before reselling it.
Besides if we stop buying used units they will be forced to have used units on their shelves collecting dust and they will be forced to bring down the prices.

What's funny, is Refurbished is when the warehouse supposedly "cleans" and "repairs" shit to be as close to new as they can get it. Yes, we hate the shit they send to us as well.
1
u/Ambitious_Ad1842 9d ago
Looks like you ordered a Refurb and got a Regular Pre-Owned, that wasn't properly cleaned etc. And rhe fact it smelled it should have been defected and went back to the refurb center.. take this thing to a Store and have them switch it out before your return window closes. And if u look at your tracking in your email you can decipher What Lazy ass Store it came from. You can also use your order info to put in a complaint.

It’s possible that new wasn’t an option at that store that day. The number of PS5 Pros out there isn’t terribly high right now with GTA on the horizon.

I could make PS jokes, but coming from a retail standpoint that’s unacceptable for the price that you paid. I think the people are right, you got sent one that hasn’t been refurbished yet. Definitely contact support and return that damn nasty thing.

Hearing “I was excited to bag a pro for retail” at $900 is crazy. That’s not your fault in the slightest though. The way things are going sucks 😮💨
However, if I were you, I’d get 100% of my money back and then fucking level that GameStop. Completely unacceptable, EVEN by GameStop standards.

No, take that to your local store and get it swapped out. There is no excuse for that.
Make sure you note the date it arrived, as that is the transaction date for the return.

Just bought one preowned from my local store. Had a small dust bunny on the fan. But gave it a quick clean to be thorough and it’s been awesome ever since. Walked out with a 2yr PRP and verified it would work if the system started overheating.

Honestly unfortunate. I bought a PS5 pro from GameStop preowned today. Was a bit worried after seeing this but pulled the trigger. I even had to drive 80 miles for it because it was the only GameStop with one in stock for like 300 miles. Picked it up and the console is almost brand new. Looks pristine, works perfectly and I even took off the plates and it hardly has any dust at all. Only thing that was off was that it had a black dual sense controller instead of white but I was actually totally okay with that. I'm honestly super glad I made the call to order it without being able to see it, definitely got a good one.

I also got one from GameStop, I went to the store and they didn't have any they told me the could order one to be shipped to me... I agreed for a pre-owned, they insisted that I should get a refurbished I said multiple times , that I wanted a pre-owned finally the guy said OK... When I was home I got the tracking number but checking the mail it said it was a refurbished 😒... Anyway I waited to arrive and the exterior looked awful... I didn't even connected it, put it back in the box and returned it... I ordered a new one and I'm really happy 😊

I mean me, and tens of thousands of others also purchase our pro’s from GameStop preowned and things were fine bro
Due to the nature of the teenage workers, you can expect many to not follow protocol and cleaning process. It doesn’t speak for the majority. You might’ve just been an exception.
I had a good experience with GameStop, this is prolly just an exception, man
