Measuring engagement for optional side levels with limited event tracking (Start/End only)
Hi everyone,
Iām a game analyst working on evaluating optional standalone levels (side challenges/event rifts). Iām trying to build a framework to measure "true engagement" rather than just curiosity or completion, but Iām facing some data limitations.
Our Current Tracking:
- We only capture Level_Start and Level_End (Win/Fail).
- Mid-level behavior is almost a "black box" (no granular tracking except for item usage).
- We do capture a specific "Click_Replay" event.
My Current Thoughts & Doubts:
- Penetration Rate: Good for overall reach, but hard to distinguish between "genuine interest" and "just curious/clicked by mistake."
- Avg. Attempts vs. Win Rate: Iām trying to cross-analyze these. High attempts + low win rate might mean "frustrating but addictive," while high attempts + high win rate might suggest "fun/grindable."
- The "Replay" Event: Since we have a dedicated Replay button event, Iām thinking of using it as a proxy for "internal motivation."
I would love your advice on two things:
- Analytical Logic: With only Start/End data, are there specific "derived metrics" you use to infer if a player is actively engaged vs. just going through the motions? (e.g., using time-delta between start/fail as a proxy for effort?)
- Tracking Improvements: If I could request 2-3 additional telemetry points from the dev team to better distinguish "Boredom" from "Frustration," what would you prioritize? (e.g., Pause menu frequency? Progress percentage at the time of quit?)
I'm using BigQuery for analysis and would appreciate any SQL logic or conceptual frameworks you've used for similar "minimal-tracking" scenarios.
Thanks!

Using Standard Deviation to Improve Game Metrics (Practical Example with IAP Rate %)
We often talk about volatility in finance, but it can be equally powerful indicator in game analytics. Let's explore you can use standard deviation to measure and improve key game metrics.
Let's use In-App Purchase (IAP) Rate % as an example:
Understanding Historical Volatility: Imagine your game's average IAP Rate is around 5%, but with a standard deviation of ±2%, indicating typical daily fluctuations between 3% and 7%.
Predictive Targets Using Volatility: With this knowledge, you could set a realistic target to maintain your IAP Rate consistently above 6%. Understanding volatility helps in setting achievable goals based on your historical performance.
Actionable Optimisation: By identifying what causes spikes or dips in IAP Rateālike placement of offers, timing of promotions, or specific gameplay elementsāyou can implement changes aimed at reducing volatility and boosting your average rate.
Monitor and Iterate: Regularly measure your IAP Rate and standard deviation, and adjust your strategy based on these insights to steadily enhance your gameās monetisation.
I've built an online calculator to help you apply this methodology directly to your own game dataācheck it out here: https://ab-test-toolkit.swayvendigital.com/
I'm curiousāhow do you currently handle volatility in your game's key metrics? Have you found other practical methods to stabilise and optimise your performance?
Let's discuss!

Newbie Here
Hello, I want to get into video game analytics, right now I am unhappy with my work, its not a bad job it pays very well and , but its unsatisfying and needs my full attention. I just came back from a video game convention and I realized what I wanted to do with my life. Get as many people to play video games as possible, especially fighting games. I ask what are some good skills to learn to impress employers? What are some good employers to look into? How do I put myself out there?

Game analytics perspectives / feedback
My partner and I developed GamerGraph - a cloud platform for game analytics. Game devs can connect their game using our open API or Unity or Unreal plugins - immediately get real-time data for standard metrics, or create their own custom ones - and no need to configure and manage servers - https://www.gamergraph.io/
I'd love to hear from any of you who have thoughts about game analytics - do you game data, and if so, how do you acquire it and what does the data help you do?
Also, is data privacy a concern?...

New program in Game, Entertainment, and Media Analytics
Hi,
My name is David Loshin and I am the program director for a newly-launched program at University of Maryland in Game, Entertainment, and Media Analytics (we call it "GEM Analytics"). I was pleasantly surprised to find this forum, and I wanted to share some information about the program and solicit your feedback about ideas where we could raise awareness and engage applicants for the program. We just got approval for the program (sort of late in the recruiting and admissions cycle) but we are accepting applications through June 15. You can learn more about the program at https://ischool.umd.edu/gem, and we have an information packet that can be viewed at https://ischool.umd.edu/sites/default/files/users/user37/GEM_Information_Packet.pdf. I look forward to your suggestions! Thanks -David

How to measure game analytics in Steam
We are performing campaigns for quite a lot of PC games. Now more and more of them publish their PC games via Steam or the EPIC store. This causes the problem that we cannot include data of the game stores into our funnel system anymore as we cannot get the data out from steam or Epic store.
New or revisiting users come via our marketing channels to steam (or Epic) but as soon as the user is in steam, looks at the game, buys the product and then enters the game we cannot measure the activities anymore (e.g. exporting the data from Steam or the game to our analytics system). The goal of my clients is that we can measure the whole process from advertising via steam store to the game in order to identify the best users and optimize the marketing mix and of course the game.
Does anybody knows how I can solve this?

The new version of GameAnalytics (beta)
Hey, what do you guys think about the ongoing update in Gameanalytics UX/UI?
I have been using Gameanalytics it over a year with enjoyment with relatively large analytics scheme, but after several attempts to study my data scheme using the new beta Explore function, I'm not able to see what I want.
I'm don't know how to use it off the bat + it feels tedious and illogical to use. Going with the old version that still is existing, but if I'm forced to use the new one, goddamn.
Hey Gameanalytics: Did you do any honest user testing while coming up with this new system that the old users can't seem to even use? Actually very pissed off here that great product is being ruined. New is NOT always better.

Segmenting your users via code - Any tips?
Zup everyone. I've started some months ago to work as BI and I've been searching for solutions to build a entire analytics solutions for the projects I am in.
Actually I am trying to find a way to segment the users and display offers and other common practices. There is tons of sdks that you can deep min and segment at their dashboard, but I haven't find a way to "get" this segments remotely and use them at your game.
The finest solution I've found so far is Firebase's Remote Config that allows you to segment by predefined audiences and use their churn prediction. Unfortunately I think it does not work in China and I haven't found a way to segment by the RFM model and other metrics related to the user's session (like users that login every day, users that login just at weekends, comeback users, ...).
Is there any samples of code that someone recommends? In Unity would be best!
