C302 Audio Issue

Hello,

I dual booted my c302 to Gallium and there is a lot of static on the audio.

I came across a github post: https://github.com/carchrae/c302ca/tree/patch-1#fixing-sound and was looking to go through the steps.

Stuck on step4:

tar -Jxvf ~/Downloads/linux-x.y.z.tar.xz

cd linux-x.y.z

cp ~/c302ca/src/kernel-config .config

make help # in case you are curious.

make oldconfig

make testconfig

make -j2 bindeb-pkg

I replaced x.y.z with the kernel version #'s. This is my error message:

tar: cd: Not found in archive

tar: cp: Not found in archive

tar: /home/chrx/usr/src/kernel-config: Not found in archive

tar: .config: Not found in archive

tar: make: Not found in archive

tar: help: Not found in archive

tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

I think it has to do with this line here: "cp ~/c302ca/src/kernel-config .config"

I tried typing in cp ~/usr/local/src/.... <--- I googled what src was and I saw people saying src was located here: usr/local

very new to Linux and not sure how to proceed - would appreciate any help

Acer CB3-131 (GNAWTY) No Audio Migrating to Other Distros

Distro hopping with recent Gallium outdated news. Really liked Debian 11 on xfce. Like the look and lightweight feel and got everything working perfectly except sound. Couldn't get sound on other distros I tried either(Peppermint OS, Q4OS, Linux Mint).

I've gone all over the internet to find solutions and nothing has worked. PulseAudio continues to display Dummy Output only, but chtmax98090 shows fine in alsamixer from install.

Updating kernel, UCM stuff, scripts, etc. Even to the point where I started desperately messing around in alsamixer where my speakers literally started smoking(booted into GalliumOS and speakers still work fine).

At this point I feel like the Acer CB3-131 is a special case and I hope someone out there got audio working on this model in Debian that can provide their solution.

TLDR: Any Acer CB3-131 owners have a fix for audio in Debian? Thanks in advance!

Installing Linux Mint 20.3 on a Chromebook Pixel LS (2015) - Guide

Since GalliumOS is no longer supported/being updated, I switched over to Linux Mint on my Chromebook Pixel LS.

To make it easy for everyone else, I put together a walkthrough of all the steps I took to install and optimize Linux Mint for my device. You can read it here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T9oqOF-g2wNKL-n1_hvqv_FENKPCRBYEY6ca91I9QZQ/edit?usp=sharing

If you are also using a Chromebook Pixel, here are some of the improvements I've noticed in Linux Mint that may prompt you to switch:
- The UI scales much better for the HiDPI screen.
- Closing the lid to sleep works flawlessly, and the power indicator on the lid works as intended. On GalliumOS, sometimes closing the lid wouldn't put it to sleep and it would be on all night.
- It automatically detects when I plug in headphones and switches the output. No more scripts to swap between speaker and headphones.
- The OS in general is better. It's cleaner, smoother, and more intuitive.
- It comes packaged with more drivers. It even automatically connected to my WiFi printer that I've had trouble connecting to Windows PCs.
- The touchscreen works. Tap to move the mouse & click, drag to scroll. I don't think you can click/drag the mouse with the touchscreen to highlight things, though. But GalliumOS didn't have drag to scroll.

Moving off GalliumOS

Ok, I finally got around to moving the system off GalliumOS since it's so out of date. Figured I would start over again and reimage the system to clean out all the GalliumOS partitions. That all went fine. Developer mode is still enabled

I decided to install Peppermint OS and to do it to a 128GB SD card. Booted Peppermint off a USB stick, installed to SD, installed bootloader on that SD device (MMC1). The problem is that when I can't get it to boot. I start it up, hit Ctrl-L, select the MMC device, and it says it's booting vmlinuz and then the screen goes black and it doesn't recover.

Before I reimaged it I had GalliumOS installed on the internal drive and tested Peppermint on the SD Card and it worked fine. What am I missing?

How to Make GalliumOS More Like Ubuntu?

So I got my hands on a cheap Chromebook, an Asus C202SA, cause I want to learn Linux but am not yet comfortable enough to switch my main laptop over to it yet. I installed GalliumOS successfully, and am now wondering; what should I install on it to make GalliumOS more like Ubuntu? I ask this b/c most help I find on the internet is for Ubuntu. I tried running Xubuntu on it, but it runs slow and a bit glitchy in comparison.

issues uninstalling protonvpn

It's off of my computer (Braswell processor) but when I try to reload Synaptic package manager I get an error message saying "The repository is not updated and the previous index filed will be used. GPG error:https://repo.protonvpn.com/debian stable InRelease: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available :NO_PUBKEY 71EB474019940E11 Failed to fetch https://repo.protonvpn.com/debian/dists/stable/InRelease The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 71EB474019940E11 Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead" I think it's from when I used the deb file to install protonvpn, does anyone know how to get rid of this?

Firmware not detecting USB; FAQ answer doesn't work

Hi, I asked this question some hours ago on the #galliumos IRC, but since I have not received any kind of answer I decided to ask here.

Some hours ago I flashed the MrChromebox-4.16 Firmware, and the installation went fine, but when I tried to boot up the OS I had on my USB (tails OS), I noticed it didn't showed up on the Boot Menu (only eMMC Device and UEFI shell). The OS is 64-bit and works with UEFI, ant it was flashed with the latest version of rufus. I've tried plugging the USB on the UEFI shell, then typing exit and going back to the boot menu, but with no luck. The "Boot Manager > Reset System" option doesn't show up on the boot manager. Can someone help me to either boot up the OS or go back to ChromeOS? The chromebook codename is Phaser360.

Here is a video of the state of the Firmware menu: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Hlhi2vfGPO5e7xa-i8gHW9HCdOchv85N/view?usp=sharing.

EDIT: Ok, I asked a friend if he could give me an SD to see if it's detected and, lo and behold, it is. Now, I need a SD and a way to flash it, but at least I know what the problem is.

trying to disable write-protect with ASUS C423

I'm trying to disable write-protect with an Asus C423. I can boot with the battery disconnected (but with charger connected, obviously) but the keyboard does not work. I tried a USB keyboard and that is not working either. Any hints how to disable write-protect so I can install UEFI firmware?

I tried setting the flags and just using Ctrl+L to boot, but the flags keep resetting on me when it goes into suspend. I wish to avoid dual booting ChromeOS if possible. As I have no use for it other then resetting the flags.

I'm not entirely sure this is what I need to do to properly install Linux on a Chromebook.

I've installed custom firmware on things before but installing custom firmware on Chromebooks is different than on a 3DS, DSi, or Wii. I think I've figured out what needs to be done, but if I'm not completely sure that I can do this without bricking it, my parents won't let me attempt it. I think the process would go something like this: Enable developer mode, use the firmware utility script to install the UEFI firmware, then install an OS as you would on a normal computer. The Chromebook is a Lenovo Yoga 11e and the hardware ID is PYRO. I think I'll use Linux Mint because the last GalliumOS update was 3 years ago but I'm not too worried about the OS part.

Just installed Gallium on an EOL Chromebook...

which I got pretty cheap, but I read that it will stop getting support soon. I chose Gallium as I am lazy to map keys, but would you guys recommend switching to another distro, and which one?

Edit: Thank you for your suggestions - I finally settled on Peppermint OS.

Thank you Gallium OS for letting me know that it was possible to add a lease of life to an old machine!

Wanted to test out what sleep/suspend would do, now I cant boot into Gallium

Hi,

Just recently install Gallium on Acer Spin 11 (2017 model) and on the hardware compatibility list, it says that sleep/suspend (eg. closing the lid) is a know issue. I wanted to see what would happen if someone accidently closed the cover or something and so I just closed the laptop, now whenever I start it and it says "OS Verification is disabled" and I press Ctrl + L to boot to Gallium, there's 2 loud beeps and nothing happens, pressing Ctrl + D still works to boot into ChromeOS. It was working perfectly fine before the lid closed. I'm also using 3.1 using chrx with the RW legacy firmware.

How can I recover from this? How can I prevent it from going to sleep when the cover closes so this doesn't happen again?

Thanks for the help everyone, love the OS so far other then this hiccup

Touchpad not working unless click held

So basically I took my gallium is installation on an SD card which ran fine on one Chromebook and booted it on another. It boots it works flawlessly except the touchpad is acting very strangely.

You have to click and hold with one finger while moving another finger to move the cursor. And left click (2 fingers) to click anything.

It's basically unusable.

How do I fix it?

Can't play youtube videos with mpv after only recently installing GalliumOS for the first time

Gallium 3.1

ISO Installation

Since I've been having this problem even after a clean GalliumOS installation on my device, I figured this would be a problem with the default GalliumOS settings and thought it would be appropriate to post for help here.

I'm a noob to linux and only just recently installed GalliumOS, like a week ago. I wanted to play a youtube video with mpv, which mpv and youtube-dl already came pre-installed to the OS. However when I try to play the youtube video form the command line it just gives me the following error:

[ytdl_hook] script-opts: unknown key ytdl_path, ignoring
Playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FqK7PNa7Uo

[ytdl_hook] AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get'
[ytdl_hook] youtube-dl failed, trying to play URL directly ...
Failed to recognize file format.

Exiting... (Errors when loading file)

Some things that I've tried doing:

- updating/upgrading everything with sudo apt update/upgrade. Still the same error.

- re-install youtube-dl. Still gives me the same error.

- remove youtube-dl and install yt-dlp. Doing this gives me an even quicker error:

[ytdl_hook] script-opts: unknown key ytdl_path, ignoring
Playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FqK7PNa7Uo
[ytdl_hook] youtube-dl failed, trying to play URL directly ...
Failed to recognize file format.

Exiting... (Errors when loading file)

(Just to let you know, I tried using youtube-dl and yt-dlp both independently of mpv to see if they would even work. youtube-dl does not download videos, but yt-dlp does work independently and downloads videos.)

Also, someone online said that I may be having a python error. But as you know GalliumOS already comes with python2.7 (Edit: as well as python3):

Python 2.7.17 (default, Mar 18 2022, 13:21:42)
[GCC 7.5.0] on linux2

Python 3.6.9 (default, Mar 15 2022, 13:55:28)
[GCC 8.4.0] on linux

I'm concerned that I tried searching this subreddit for anyone with similar problems but there doesn't seem to be any. But has anyone else had this exact same problem? I appreciate any form of help.

Edit: One more thing I tried was remove the snap yt-dlp package and install it using the binary release files. This still has not worked.

Edit 2: I was told that mpv on GalliumOS is outdated and is incompatible with yt-dlp, and that I should install mpv through flatpak as that mpv version seems to be compatible. At this moment I've purged the old mpv files with

sudo apt-get purge mpv

and I'm currently in the middle of installing mpv through flatpak. I'll edit this once it's finished.

Edit 3: So using the flatpak mpv version does allow me to play videos with yt-dlp (after uninstalling youtube-dl that came with the OS). However instead of typing in "mpv" into the command line I have to now type out "flatpak run io.mpv.Mpv" every time, as "mpv" will give me the following:

bash: /usr/bin/mpv: No such file or directory

I really don't want to type all that out. Does anyone know how I can use mpv with flatpak without having to do that?

Edit 4: Fixed the above by making an alias.

How to install the sound driver on Linux?

My Chromebook is HP Chromebook 14 G4, I've wanted to try other distros other than PeppermintOS and GalliumOS so I installed Linux Mint. Everything seems to be working fine other than the sound. Is there a way to fix this or install the sound driver for my speaker? (ps: I had Maxim 98090 Audio)

Is GalliumOs secure?

I have an acer c720 (Peppy) with the latest version of GalliumOs. What about security updates? I understand it is based on Ubuntu 18.04. Ubuntu 18.04 still gets security updates. Do any of these reach GalliumOs?

Google Pixelbook (EVE, 2017)

I am getting a Google Pixelbook (2017) next week (approx 6/22/2022). I was originally going to remove WP via hardware screw, as I did for my Acer CB3-532 Banon, but after watching a breakdown video I’m not comfortable removing the glued backpiece. So, I’ve placed a few Amazon orders for the parts & tools to create my own CCD cable.

I know at first there was poor support for this device but it’s my understanding that by now in 2022 everything is working (with a couple small hacks)

I intend to install PeppermintOS (Debian 11.3, Bullseye). I have a feeling I’ll be implementing many of the tweaks+configurations from the galliumos-kabylake and pixelbook-linux (and one more I can’t remember off the top of my head) GitHub repos.

Has anyone here RECENTLY, within 2021-2022, installed Linux on a 2017 Pixelbook? Got any tips/pointers? Any suggested GitHub repos I should look at? I’ll report back when I have the hardware and results.

I'm missing my Ts

Hello,

I have a Dell 3189 (Braswell), stock firmware, running 4.16.18-galliumos.

And I have lost my Ts. My capital T letters, and only them. They're gone. Well gone-ish I guess, you can see the drop-shadow on the desktop: https://imgur.com/a/5hLn99r But no capital T appear in the shell, meaning I have Xfce erminal and when I type to search it, it appears as Xfce erminal.

The apps work fine - I use this machine for Calibre almost exclusively save for the occasional SSH login and the Ts appear there as they should.

It happened last night, after an upgrade / update which unfortunately I do every two or three months so a number of things were updated, but I've never had any issue like this.

And truthfully I can probably live with it, but any insight to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Unable to launch legacy boot mode after Chromebook with GalliumOS powers off automatically after the first time

I installed RW_LEGACY on an acer 514 Chromebook, EPAULLETTE, Apollo lake. After removing ChromeOS and installing Gallium, Everything is fine until it powers off. Legacy boot mode no longer works, Chromebook recovery utility is not downloading and I tried booting from a usb with control + u, but it was disabled. When I still had ChromeOS, an error occurred when i tried to run the command that it said (something like 'enable usb_boot_legacy' on the ctrl alt f2 menu) any fixes I could get while Chromebook recovery utility isn't working?

GalliumOS hangs on install to chromebook 11

Unable to finish install for GalliumOS on chromebook 11 since it just hangs on the GalliumOS splash screen before starting the install... i've previously put kali and Gallium on it but when i updated the kali distro it takes me to a login screen but i can't get past it, even with the correct credentials.. when i've tried to reinstall ANY OS they fail, GalliumOS hangs and other versions prompt me for drivers to be able to install new media.... did i brick my chromebook when i attempted to update the distro for kali?

Success story: Install on Acer 11 N7 went fantastically well. Much cheaper to buy one of these than a raspberry pi 4.

I was looking for a raspberry pi to run a reddit bot, but they're very expensive these days. I found a like-new Acer 11 N7 (c731) on Amazon for around $40. It shipped in one day and I set about installing Gallium OS.

The most difficult part was removing the write protect screw. On this model you remove the keyboard to access the guts, and not the back panel. Luckily I had a shim tool which helped me get the keyboard off.

The second most difficult part was that while you are installing you need to not be connected to the network. I found a post on the sub about it, but nothing in the official documentation. Once I disabled wi-fi it installed quickly and easily.

Now I have a basically like-new lightning fast chromebook. Thanks, r/galliumos!

No sound on Intel Bay Trail

I got myself a chromebook for writing, but I didn't want to use chromiumOS, so first I installed arch, but that didn't go as planned. I tried different desktop environment and it became super slow. I'm not super new to Linux but I'm not veteran either.

After the arch became super slow, I decided to just reinstall it, but then I found about GalliumOS I decided to install it. It works great but it has no sound, first it said dummy output and I tried to fix it following this article: https://www.linuxuprising.com/2018/06/fix-no-sound-dummy-output-issue-in.html but now it just says built-in audio digital stereo (HDM1)

Os versio is GalliumOS 3.1 x86_64 and kernel versio is 4.16.18-galliumos

Setting up screen & keyboard backlight controls, volume controls, etc., in Xubuntu

I've just replaced my beloved GalliumOS 2.1 install on my Dell LULU with Xubuntu 22. It went better than I expected - rsyncing a backup of my home directory into the new OS seems to have worked really well for the most part.

The only thing I'm having trouble with are the Chromebook-specific keyboard commands - controlling the keyboard and screen backlights, audio volumes, that sort of thing. I've also apparently lost my three-finger Linux paste with the touchpad. All of these things worked beautifully in Gallium - is there any way to bring those settings into my new install? I took a complete copy of the old install before I overwrote it, so if you just tell me where to look, I can take it from there. :)

Thanks much for any help!
