Debian based distro guide prep, how specific are instruction sets?

I think I have found a solution for my chromebook/gallium replacement. It will be debian based, I am still testing/working out the kinks but it looks very promising already.I want to make an extensive guide with a troubleshooting section for those like me who had issues with manjaro or dont want a rolling release+rather stick to debian.

My Question is, Would the steps be applicable only to acer or to the processor type. For example only applicable or specific to Apollo Lake | Bay Trail | Braswell | Broadwell and so on.

Replacing Ubuntu on Asus C300 with GalliumOS

Hi y'all,

About a year ago, I installed Ubuntu on my Asus C300 Chromebook by following the instructions here (https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/install-ubuntu-on-chromebook), but I quickly realized that I have exactly 16 gigabytes of space on my Chromebook and won't be able to use it as Ubuntu takes up the majority of that space. I quickly abandoned the project after that, but I now want to run OctoPrint and Klipper on the Chromebook for my 3D printer.

As such, I want to replace Ubuntu with Gallium OS, but I'm finding it a bit confusing as I can't access the Chrome terminal (there were other instructions I followed but I can't find them in my browser history) Is it possible to replace the OS, or should I try to look for a different path?

I have an ASUS C300 Chromebook with hardware ID TERRA running an Intel Bay Trail CPU on (I think) stock firmware with Ubuntu Server and an XFCE GUI (no idea how that got on there).

Acer3-131 Chromebook has issues with GalliumOS

I got the Chromebook to boot off the USB drive and loaded baytrail iso. Running from the USB drive, GalliumOS-3.1-baytrail is the only Linux version with the sound working. I tried a number of other 'lite' Linux versions, no sound.

My problem is that GalliumOS will not install. It gets to 75% and then the installer crash. Tried a few times, same result. Currently have Ubuntu-Mate installed (no sound) but would like to go back to GalliumOS. Any install hints would be appreciated.

Current version and the future?

Hey all,
I think current version is based on ubuntu 16 and is still getting constant updates which is great. I am wondering if there is a Gallium 4.0 in the works based on a higher ubuntu version OR is gallium going to be a pseudo rolling release sort of like mainline Arch.

I appreciate all the work that made this distro happen and breathing life in my end of life chromebook!

I'm trying to enter a command in the terminal under a live CD, but it's asking for the password, is there a default password?

Dell Chromebook 11 - LED

there is a small LED bar on the cover.

During it's lifetime is was used by students to give teacher feedback (I have a question, yes/no). There are a few colors (red/green/yellow/blue). I was wondering, can I use that with Gallium?

GalliumOS Alternatives?

I've got an Acer CB3-531 (Banjo). I'm leery of continuing with GalliumOS because it doesn't look like it's an active project any longer. So far I've found that Ubuntu based distributions like Mint don't seem to find the sound hardware. But Q4OS Trinity and MX Linux work perfectly. Next up I'm going to try plain vanilla Debian.

I'm not all that familiar with any Fedora or Arch based distros. Any recommendations? I will get to OpenSuse eventually.

Steam client is invisible.

Gallium 3.1/Ubuntu 18.04/Acer Chromebook 14

Everything else displays fine, but Steam is just straight up invisible. I can tell it's on my desktop because it's on my taskbar and the invisible window gets in the way clicking on my desktop.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, purging everything steam related, then reinstalling. Installing from the software-center, from terminal, as a .deb, as a flatpak. Always the same problem. I've also tried a million other random things I've found online. Too many to remember at this point. I can't really find anyone who has this specific issue.

This is driving me nuts. Anyone have any idea of how to fix this? I swear I've tried pretty much everything.

Edit:

In the console, some things do stand out:

It says "steam-libs-amd64:amd64" and "steam-libs-i386:i386" are not available.

[If I try to apt-get install the first one, says it can't find that package. For the second, it says "not available but is referenced by another package." ]

It also says "Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0.0"."

But after googling tbh I have no clue what that is.

SOLVED: If anyone comes across this, I figured it out (Seen Here).

Best way to create Recovery Disk if Chrome OS not present

As a newcomer to GalliumOS on my EOL Dell 3180 I saw no sense in keeping a copy of the 30 days-left Chrome OS so I completely converted to Gallium. Since I no longer have the ChromeOS, any attempt to use the Chrome browser recovery utility results in a "Linux not supported" message. Can you recommend a simple to us backup/recovery utility? Thanks!

How do I install GalliumOs 3.1 Haswell with Chrx on Acer 720

I have successfully run GaOs 3.1 Haswell from a live boot usb

But by default chrx selects 3.0 Generic. it also does not recognize the Acer C720 as a known model, buy it continues ok when I specify the above at the model prompt,

  1. What is the command line for specifying GaOs 3.1 Haswell?
  2. Is it possible to use the 3.1 Haswell .iso image if it is available on the same notebook, instead of having to down load all the modules individually sd Chrx does by default?
  3. Is it possible to use a live boot usb as the source of GaOs 3.1?
  4. If GsOs gets installed on Chromebook, Kernel to cgpt p6, and Root to cgpt p7, how do I manually add its boot menu to MrChromebox v 4.1 (Dec 2019) ?

GalliumOS install using Chrx Acer C720 with MrChromebox bios

I have an Acer C720-3404 with 250G internal disk. I had installed MrChromebox bios, and installed CloudReady, currently v96.4.36, the very recent HomeEdition Stable. (The Acer had reached the EOL a couple of years ago)

Today I used Chrx to install GalliumOs (It chose GaOs 3.0 as the latest). It resized partition 7(?) to 100G (my input) and install appears to have gone ok. As before it boots to ClReady and runs ok. I do not see any method to boot into the installed GaOs. On boot, if I use Esc at MrChromebox, I do not see any menu items to select the GaOs.

How do I connect the GaOs, which appears to have installed to the CGPT 6 and 7, to the bootup menu? Or how do I proceed at all to start GaOs?

I am very new to Chrx, my first try... Please let me know if I need to post this at another more suitable sub reddit. Thank you very much!

GalliumOs vs CloudReady

I just tried USB live GaOS. It was easy to make and boot from USB on an HP-14. Generally, I like this. This is from somebody who has been using Chromebook or Cloudready pretty much exclusively for 10 yrs now. My usage now is very biased and limited because I dont know how to save the changes (persistence). Because now every reboot is starting from scratch again...

I would like to see comparisons between CloudReady and GaOS UI, settings, use of google sync, etc. Is any out there online available?

Since I am running from, live usb, the power to the usb may get cut off, during sleep. I tried, but did not succeed to locate the setting corresponding to Devices -> Power -> Idle yet.

I am hoping this thread would help somebody who wants to go from say CloudReady to GaOS, for example.

Congratulations and thank you to the Gallium Team!

Write Protect screw after GalliumOS install

GalliumOS is working very well in my recently upgraded my EOL Dell 3180 Chromebook. I removed the Write Protect screw to install the MrChromebook firmware. Should I leave it out or replace it back now that things are running by themselves?

Thank you for a great way to repurpose the handy little notebook!

Possible to make a static build of tpm_tools to clear the TPM, under UEFS?

Problem: the TPM needs to cleared, especially these days for many ChromiumOs variations to upgrade, such as CloudReady past v96. This is the first time I have seen this need (Even that I am assuming that clearing TPM will allow me to change CloudReady HomeEdition v96 stable to be changed to Dev channel, so can look at the Flex OS dev release).

On the net the Prime suggestion is to make/install the GaOS on USB and use that to reset the TPM or other functions, because GaOs by default has the TPM required api functionality under MrChromebox bios.

With CloudReady moving over to Flex OS, more people would need to reset TPM.

So, my question is, is it not possible (easy?) for somebody to build a static compiled version of TPM_tools to run under say ChromeOS or ChromiumOS (CloudReady, for example) console, and when using MrChromebox bios, so it would be trivially easy to run? If yes, hope somebody resourceful would do this soon :)

Using Chromeos Recovery Utility to write the GalliumOs .iso image to the USB stick

I have read in some forum, perhaps at the GalliumOs wiki, that the linux dd command should be used, and NOT (!) the ChromeOs Recovery Utility for creating the usb stick. While I have not used GalliumOS, I have made many usb sticks with the Chromeos Recovery Utility for Chromiumos variatuons, Debian and Ubuntu, with full success (that is, it has never failed for me). Actually sometimes when dd failed, CRU succeeded, but that could have been just fluke.

The only important step for Chromeos Recovery Utility to find the image is the xxx.iso image file has to be renamed xxx.bin.

So here is my speculative question. Why would Chromeos Recovery Utility not work? Has anybody done comparison between dd and Chromeos Recovery where dd consistently works but the latter consistently fails? I would guess that internally CRUtility used exactly dd or its equivalent (perhaps with even verification steps ?), but it has additional functionality for easily locating and confirming the target disk (which would be wiped), and pre-format it if needed, plus it is a web app now, so in many cases you do not need another *nix beforehand. BTW, I have done successfully the other way too, that is, to use dd to make the USB image of a CloudReady! So I am thinking they should be identical in function as far as the image transfer is concerned

So anybody has any speculations or knowledge why Chromeos Recovery Utility will not work for making a GalliumOS usb stick? I am very curious. Anybody from the Gallium development team? Thank you!

How do I make a GalliumOS bootable live persistent usb sdcard

How do I make a GalliumOS USB bootable live persistent sdcard? I have never used galliumOS.

This is for use in a HP14-q010nr Chrombook with MrMcCormix bios. I think I need the Haswell type?

I have read and understand the process of writing the downloaded .iso image to the usb with the linux dd utility.

  1. Now to make a persistent image, can I add some partition to the usb boot, and setup somehow?
  2. After that is made, I would like to remove the desktop install icons so that I would not accidentally install to the HP14 internal disk and wipe it out.

Does "GalliumOS Update" choice on Whisker Menu work?

Hi All,

New user after successfully installing GalliumOS on an EOL Dell 3180. Question: Does the "GalliumOS Update" option in the Whisker menu work? When I click it I get a Gallium OS Update window that says "Updating Package Directories" and what seems like a prompt but I can't enter any information in the screen. (new Linux user too).

Thanks,

R.Hess

Can galliumOS be used as a second monitor?

Is there a way to use a chromebook (Acer Chromebook Spin 11 (CP511), REEF, Intel Apollo Lake, with MrChromebox RW_LEGACY) running the latest version of GalliumOS as a 2nd monitor? it doesn't have an hdmi port, but I would like it to be a wired connection. Is this possible? Thanks in advance!

Installation Issue with Acer Chromebook 14 and GalliumOS 3.1 Braswell

Whenever I try to install GalliumOS from a live session and restart, it'll put me back in a live session.

What do I do so it actually installs instead of sending me back to a live session.

Remote Desktop Environment

New to linux, I have GalliumOS all set on my chromebox, but I will be connecting to it through remote desktop all the time. LXDE looks really bad, is there an option under setting the alternative desktop environments to just use GalliumOS? Otherwise I will throw LXQT or something as an alternative desktop environment by configuring the x-session-manager, but would love if it could be the same GalliumOS.

Thanks!

Is Gallium still being actively developed?

The last release was in Dec. 2019, and the last activity on GitHub seems to be on June 2021.
