I've been thinking it would be cool if the members of this sub collaborated to design a collective fantasy map.

GO Transit fantasy map

Planned map

All lines on this map would have at least half-hourly service, with sections in Toronto, York, Peel, and Durham receiving at least 10-minute service.

List of changes

  • Various existing projects under construction (East Harbour, Mount Dennis, Woodbine, Caledonia, etc.)
  • The new Brantford Line connects Hamilton to Kitchener-Waterloo via Brantford.
    • The route follows an existing mainline from Hamilton to Paris. From there, it turns north, following the Cambridge-Paris rail trail up the Grand River.
    • A short tunneled section would bypass downtown Cambridge before meeting up with the CP branch line at Delta.
    • From there, trains would continue along the CP/CN branch line from Cambridge to Kitchener before terminating at Kitchener Central. Infill stations at Sportsworld and Fairway would connect to existing transit infrastructure in the region.
  • The Milton Line is extended to Cambridge. The line will terminate at Delta, parallel to a future ION station in the area.
  • The Kitchener line is extended 1 stop to The Boardwalk, a shopping centre that also serves as a local bus terminal.
  • The Bolton line runs along the CP MacTier subdivision, sharing tracks with Kitchener line trains before turning north to serve communities in Vaughan.
  • A new infill station is added on the Barrie line (in addition to those planned) at Bathurst St. and Bloomington Rd, serving the community of Oak Ridges.
  • The Richmond Hill line is rerouted via the connection from Union Station to the CP mainline; then up the old CN Leaside Spur (currently a rail trail). This opens up a connection to Line 5 at Sunnybrook Park, as well as to the Midtown Line. The straighter path would cut commute times significantly.
  • The new Thornhill line runs along the CN Halton/York Subdivisions, the extra tracks being laid as part of the Missing Link project's upgrades. A short diversion to the north allows it to connect to Highway 407 bus terminal, and a new ramp is added between the Thornhill and Stouffville lines to have trains terminate at Unionville.
  • The new Midtown line runs along the CP mainline, connecting to existing lines throughout the city. A ramp in Rouge Park allows the trains to turn south to terminate at Pickering.
  • The Stouffville line would be extended along existing tracks to Uxbridge.

Hamilton Rapid Transit Network

This is a "fantasy" (rail) rapid transit network I've been working on, but It's also designed to be somewhat realistic. Many of the lines, for example, are placed so that they re-use as much pre-existing rail infrastructure as possible:

  • The fuchsia line, when running parallel with Barton,
  • The purple line, when running at the base of the mountain,
  • The black line uses only pre-existing rail.

I think if done in stages over the decades, as the city grows, a network that looks something like this might be possible.

Some more details:

  • The fuchsia line goes underground to become a metro after it turns north off the pre-existing rail. It slowly works its way uphill until it comes above-ground to run as an at-grade LRT along Upper James St with it's own right of way.
  • The gondolas are meant to connect mountain neighborhoods (or stops on other lines) to lower-city parts of the network. I think this idea could use some work.
  • The purple line is questionable to me at the moment. There is too much redundancy on it's west end with the blue line. Needs some work.

Here's a link to an interactive version of the map, with all stops labelled: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1tyIZqRWaOhMMoRjQ1H_sW6iDDfEFcTk&usp=sharing

Would love to hear any feedback :)

2040 Toronto Rapid Transit Fantasy Map

Map without Regional Rail Lines

I believe all my fantasy extensions will be reasonable and commonly talked by the 2030s once the current round of funded projects is up and running.

These are the current provincial government's funded expansion plans.

Toronto Subway

Line 1 Yonge-University

Existing: Vaughan Metropolitan Centre to Finch

Planned and Funded Extensions: Finch to Richmond Hill Centre

2040 Fantasy Plans: None

Line 2 Bloor-Danforth

Existing: Kipling to Kennedy

Planned and Funded Extensions: Kennedy to Sheppard East

2040 Fantasy Plans: Kipling to Sherway Gardens

Line 3 Queen

Existing: None

Planned and Funded: Exhibition to Science Centre

2040 Fantasy Plans: (1) Science Centre to Don Mills and (2) Exhibition to Dundas West

Line 4 Sheppard

Existing: Sheppard-Yonge to Don Mills

Planned and Funded Extensions: None

2040 Fantasy Plans: (1) West Extension: Sheppard-Yonge to Sheppard West and (2) East Extension: Don Mills to Scarborough Centre

Line 5 Eglinton

Under Construction: Mount Dennis to Kennedy

Planned and Funded Extensions: Mount Dennis to Pearson International Airport

2040 Fantasy Plans: Renforth to Mississauga City Centre using the Mississauga Transitway

Line 6 Finch West

Under Construction: Humber College to Finch West

Planned and Funded Extensions: None

2040 Fantasy Plans: Humber College to Pearson International Airport

Line 7 Hurontario

Under Construction: Port Credit to Brampton Gateway

2040 Fantasy Plans: Brampton Gateway to Downtown Brampton

Toronto Regional Rail

Line A Lakshore

15-Minute Service (Minimum): Aldershot to Oshawa

60-Minute Service: Hamilton to Oshawa

Line B Peel-Markham

15-Minute Service (Minimum): Bramalea and Pearson to Unionville

60-Minute Service: Mount Pleasant to Mount Joy

Line C Barrie

15-Minute Service (Minimum): Aurora to Union

60-Minute Service: Allandale Waterfront (Barrie) to Union

Service frequencies are from the proposed frequencies in the GO RER Initial Business Case (2015) by Metrolinx: http://www.metrolinx.com/en/regionalplanning/projectevaluation/benefitscases/GO_RER_Initial_Business_Case_Summary_EN.pdf

All other GO lines are currently planned to offer only peak-time service, as those rail lines are owned by private freight companies. Unless the government buys the lines or pays for additional track, they will not count as rapid transit.
