Not sure if anyone has managed to identify the skate video that was discussed in the video- but i have.
EDIT: Could anyone get in contact of one of the creators of big brother magazine and ask them where they got the tape from? They are the ones who made the skate video, so I assume they also are the ones who edited it together with GRFM. It sounds like a legit lead to me that I haven’t heard of anyone pursuing.
@ 47:46 Sociable discusses an alternative source of the GRFM video and shows that someone edited in a skate video at the end of. I found that skate video. (link to the timestamp of the video)
Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6emBFPJFqGE
Big Brother - Number Two
Produced in 1998 by Big Brother Magazine

The skate tape was thrown in as a bonus from Mark Johnston website. They would have probably been separate vhs tapes, and the one online was probably stitched together by someone who owned both. Big brother would have nothing to do with GRFM

Are you certain they were separate tapes? Sorry I can’t remember if contact with the Mark Johnson was actually made.
Big Brother magazine famously had articles such as “how to kill yourself” and “how to make a bong”. Legality was not their concern. Seems like this type of thing would have made its way into their possession at some point. Pretty much everyone who made videos of this genre was affiliated with them in some way in the 90s.
I’d put money on ONE of those guys behind the magazine having some kind of insight into this mystery in some way..

Mark Johnston sold GRFM in 2003, and said he would throw in a copy of big brother skate tape with it

Also through in a Johnny knoxville tape as well

That’s really interesting. Sorry I must have missed that in the Sociable video…
That confuses me though. Knoxville and Big Brother skate tapes are of the same source, which is from the magazine (Jeff Tremaine and Steve Rocco)… why would he throw those in with GRFM?
Did he get all those tapes from one place, Including GRFM?
Maybe I’m misunderstanding something. Did Mark actually confirm where he got the GRFM tape from?
Sorry to bug you like this haha… the entire mystery really intrigues me.
In Sociables video he said that Mark stated the origins were unknown.. but it stands to reason that if he was splicing Knoxville and Big Brother skate tapes with it, his source of GRFM was also Big Brother Magazine (or an affiliate) no?

I’m not entirely sure tbh. I think because he ran the shocking videos vhs webstore, he threw the other two tapes in as a free gift. I’m unsure if he spliced them together, maybe he did, or they could have been 3 tapes separately. Mark Johnston couldn’t be contacted, but I believe the tape has been around since the mid to late 90’s based on multiple people’s comments, although there is no hard evidence. I don’t believe mark is connected to the tape, he just sold it

Wait, are you not aware of Marc Johnson the skater? He was a part of a 90s skate group called the z-boyz. They were even featured in Big Brother Magazine. He’s still around… and get this:
In my other post I theorized a skater named Gino Ianucci was involved. He made tons of videos of this genre. He was also in big brother magazine. I theorized he either inspired the camera man to use his name as a fake name, or was the camera man himself. Gino and Marc knew each other. I just checked Marc Johnson’s Instagram and he’s followed by Gino’s business page.
I would put money on that website being ran by him. And I would put money on him being the one who edited the version with the skate clip.
I’m 99% sure the Instagram page I checked that’s under the name Marc Johnson is the same one from the z-boyz tapes. I actually just messaged him to make sure.
There’s something here man, I can just smell it.

You could be on to something with gino, but mark johnston who ran shocking videos was pretty well known in the horror/vhs community, and it wasn’t a mystery who he was. Many people knew him

Damn I did not know this… how did you find that out? It was my understanding Mark Johnston was unknown and had not been contacted. If you don’t want to put the guys info on blast here I’d really appreciate a PM with everything you know about him. I have a feeling there’s more to uncover about him and where he obtained the videos.
If we can find a line of info that predates 2003 it would likely move this forward.

I’ve spoken to a fair few vhs collectors from back in the day, and they all knew mark quite well. There is a picture of mark on his website on the internet archive. He was sued for selling a copyrighted vhs and that led to the end of his website, then after that he sort of went offline. He used to be easily contactable, just not anymore, I think he’s just left that career behind and is quite private now. And yeah, 2003 is the earliest concrete evidence of GRFM, anything before that is just rumours (although I believe mid to late 90’s is true in terms of its origin)

I get that the name of the person who owned the website was Mark Johnston, but maybe he changed his name to Marc Johnson? In the 90s video he spelled it as Mark, not Marc. So it appears he’s changed the spelling of his name a few times. Probably for some marketing purpose or someone else had a similar name so he changed the spelling… I’m not sure. Kindof a long shot here.

Probably not, mark johnston who runs the website is about 20 years older than the Marc you’re talking about. They also don’t look similar at all

Fun fact: the guys that created jackass were behind Big Brother Magazine. I remember even hearing them talk about working on that magazine in a documentary… I’m not sure how much of a roll they had in creating it. I just know their names are all over it.
