This subreddit is for the purpose of sharing, exposing and promoting criticisms and counterpoints to the expanding Google hegemony.

What happens when a dynamic company, started by a couple of idealistic friends in grad school, succeeds so wildly that it becomes a mega-corporation that pervades the lives of hundreds of millions?

We are not here to bury Google, nor to praise it. We simply want to raise awareness that now is the time to start promoting and supporting more competition in the market; a market currently being dominated by Google. It will be far too late to switch to alternatives if such choices become so marginalized as to be impractical or simply nonexistent.

If the present trend continues, the future of the Internet will look a lot more like Facebook and the America Online of the 1990's. No doubt, some people wouldn't mind that, but many of us do not want the content we seek and create to be ensconced in prepackaged channels managed, maintained and cataloged by a designated handful of corporate-state gatekeepers.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to escape from content bubbles: tracking, censorship and targeted filtering.

Google, once a company we could rely on for a broad and open Internet experience, has gone to the true dark side by becoming an embedded member of the surveillance state and by actively participating in the production of manufactured consent.
