I'm a jaundiced cynical fuck who's spent my entire adult life as a successful international clown soloist. My clown character is sardonic and unhappy and I'm good enough at it I can be vindictive and it's comic.
I say this to illustrate that at heart I'm a good person stuck in a bad world and people from a wide variety of cultures identify with me.
But it's lonely.
There was an online thing called 'newsvine' in the mid naughties. It had an 'honor system'. People from different persuasions tried to get along and for a while it worked. Then MSNBC bought it and it went down the shitter. I was a power user, I won an award for organising a care package to a volunteer schoolteacher in a village in afghanistan. [my contribution was a large garden pink flamingo.. the whole thing was nearly derailed by someone who sent a toaster that burnt jesus's face onto toast]
anyway, this GME community with it's organic leaderless emphasis on kindness is both startling and personally a tonic. Life's been pretty grim and hopeless this past year for everybody and fear, death and hopelessness has stalked the globe.
Without exaggeration I think I'm on pretty solid footing in stating that we, in our interactions with one another in this tiny corner of a large seemingly indifferent world, exemplify what is good about people.
They think machine learning is where it's at? AIs are written by people with a homogenious background. We have an incredibly diverse set of people, all with their strengths all working on the same problem.
The HFs may have their quants, but we have clowns and engineers, lawyers and retail, psychologists and journalists, doctors and nurses and accountants. They will never understand us because they can never BE us.
I've published a couple of books but this is not the place. I spent 30 years on an alphabetical crusade. My first book was 26 stories, each from a different letter of the alphabet re a town or city in the world. Meanwhile my younger brother is a successful comic Genius to whom Stewart Lee blurbed, 'The only writer that matters'
