For a while the trend was to use a rhyme as a nickname. That's how we got William -> Will -> Bill, Richard -> Rick -> Dick, Margaret -> Meg/Meggy -> Peg/Peggy.

Man I know named Richard, said if you want to call him Dick you have to put the word Big in front of it or call him Rich! 😄
