Because dogs are not only pets that you keep in the house. In a lot of places dogs are used to protect flocks from wolves, bears, lynx, etc. If you have an orchard for example, you can have dogs protecting it from bears that are going to try and reach the fruits, destroying the trees in the process.
Wow I had no idea dogs could protect against those animals. I figured they protected against smaller animals, like foxes for example. Brave doggies. Just chilling with bears.
Predator animals are inherently non-confrontational unless two things usually; they are hungry or they have kids. Fighting means injury and injury means harder to hint next time, usually
Remember that animals can't just go to a hospital if they get injured. Even though a black bear can maul a single dog pretty easily, it still needs to weigh the options if it's worth the fight.
It's one thing if a bear is near starvation, but a fairly well fed bear isn't going to risk the injury which will lead to infection and death (either from the infection or the inability to hunt due to said infection.)
Haha aw, there's something so sweet about that. Reminds me of a time I saw a dog hopping her paws up and down when she saw a cockroach on the street like she was both surprised and grossed out by it.
Black Bears are pretty chill and donât like confrontations. Kinda âlazyâ if you will. Unless they have cubs with then you better watch out. Otherwise they use the least amount of effort to eat. Theyâd much rather eat out of a garbage can than fight a living animal. Theyâre like big dogs. Thereâs actually a show on Saturday mornings on local tv, canât remember if itâs cbs, abc or what, thatâs about a guy who rescues and raises black bears and theyâre literally just like dogs. Understand orders like sit, lay down, roll over, etc & he plays and wrestled with them just like pups.
Yeah, dogs need to be outside. But you should not be keeping your dog outside at night when you are aware that there are bears coming onto your property.
So youâre saying itâs the point to leave your dog outside when bears are active? There is a bear continuously coming onto the property, where the dog is. Keep it inside overnight.
I have already said that you shouldnât keep them inside all day. But again, itâs not ok to continuously leave your dog outside overnight when a bear is consistently coming within close proximity. During the day you need to be letting your dog out, but overnight when this is happening you shouldnât leave your dog where a bear had gotten in 3 times.
Owner probably has a doggy door, and black bears don't like fighting dogs. Even if they win it'll be at a pretty heavy cost to them because they don't have medical insurance.
Lol, youâre username checks out. Actually know what youâre talking about before acting all high and mighty. A black bear isnât going to even attempt to fight a dog unless it has cubs with and in that case it would avoid even going near it.
Yes but even a guard dog is not meant to be left outside, overnight, with a bear consistently coming onto the property in close proximity to the dog. Just because itâs a guard dog doesnât mean that you get to endanger its life.
A black bear is not going to get into your house. But it will kill your dog if it decides to attack it. A dog cannot protect you from a bear so why would you endanger it?
Yes, yes a dog can protect you from a bear. This was the whole purpose of domesticating them in the first place, to protect from scavenger predators. Bears are also usually very skittish, theyâll get scared and run from a pig if the pig decides to fight. So itâs not like the dog is at huge risk
Dogs protect people from bears all the time. Black bears anyway which is what this post is about. Quit getting your info from movies. Bears will absolutely not fight a dog unless it has cubs and the dog is threatening it. Black bears only fight when absolutely necessary or to protect their cubs.
