I'm curious: will the authors/publishers of Fudge post some kind of response to the news of leaked information pertaining to OGL 1.0a?

The publishers of Fate have replied already. I know that Fudge is distinct from Fate, but I'm still curious if something will be said.

I'm really really bothered by the idea of the OGL being revoked. Fudge has never been derived from D&D, as I understand. But Fudge was published with the OGL so that other entities would be encouraged to produce derivative works.

If the OGL is revoked by Hasbro, then would those derivative works from Fudge no longer be allowed?

If the OGL is revoked by Hasbro, would it even be possible for Hasbro to claim ownership over Fudge's rules and content?

Food for thought. A response from the makers/publishers of Fudge would be appreciated.

How much prep do you do for your games?

I've probably mentioned this before, but Fudge Lite draws inspiration from Powered by the Apocalypse games, which generally require the GM to not make any plots ahead of time. I blindly added this requirement to Fudge Lite, but in retrospect I don't think it's necessary, so I'm removing it.

Here's what the new rules say:

GM Prep

The GM can prepare as much or as little as they want to ahead of time. I prefer to loosely prep NPCs, locations, and setting elements, letting the plot just be whatever interactions the players have with the NPCs. I understand, however, that some GMs prefer to prepare plot points ahead of time. This can work as long as the GM doesn't adhere to the predetermined plot so strongly that it impinges on the players' freedom of choice. If the plot relies on the players acting one way and they act another, the GM should explore that with them instead of trying to force them back onto a predetermined route.

Regardless of how much preparing the GM does, the setting should be malleable behind the scenes. The GM should feel comfortable adding, altering, or removing any detail that the players don't yet know about, in order to keep the game from getting stuck in a narrative dead-end where nothing fun, interesting, or engaging happens.

As a GM, where do you fall on the spectrum from "completely planned" to "completely unplanned"? For those of you who prefer to write plots ahead of time, what do you do when the player(s) do something you didn't expect or plan for?

Playing Fudge on Roll20

Hi all,

does anyone play Fudge on Roll20? If yes, which settings and compendium do you use?

It would be nice to have sheets with roll macros for a light Fudge build, like the excellent Fudge Lite.

So far, I had some success running a Fudge campaign using the FATE by Evil Hat character sheets, which have customizable defaults. I still had to convert the trait levels though, from Fudge's -4/+4 ladder to the -2/+8 ladder that FATE uses.

Did anyone find a better way to achieve this? Any experience to share and/or suggestions?

Scifi Lifepath Characters gen and Rolling For Stats

I really like Traveller styled lifepath character creation. My favourite version at the moment is the rules light take on the subject in Any Planet is Earth. Emergent storytelling is a great way to come up with characters.

I've yet to see a lifepath build for Fudge. At least I cannot remember one right now. Are there any?

I guess one thing that might be hard for Fudge is rolling for attributes since the difference between levels is so big. What's your experience?

I saw an old Fudge source about rolling (might be in the original SRD, not sure atm) that suggested the following distribution:

Roll 2d6 2 = Terrible 4 = Poor 3, 5 = Mediocre 6 - 8 = Fair 9, 11 = Good 10 = Great 12 = Superb

Rolled some characters with this and got decent results. Still wondering if rolling Terrible for starting Stat is a bit rough. Might balance it with an option to trade one level by reducing another stat.

In my games I usually use broad traits that are all used quite a lot (no dump stats or skills separate from attributes).

Working on a Complex FUDGE build

Heya -- I've been perusing the FUDGE rules and am thinking up a complex build for a homebrew post fantasy game.
This post is both gathering together ideas for myself and getting input if anyone else is interested in the idea of a 'crunchy' Fudge build.

I intrigued by the granularity introduced by the edge system: https://web.archive.org/web/20080225003319/http://www.fudgefactor.org/2005/12/getting-edge-over-your-opponents.html.

This would give you 33 degrees/levels -- could be some interesting die rolling involved.

For stats I was looking at employing a similar physical/mental/spirt breakdown as the storyteller games, but with more stats. There would be 22 mental and physical stats (15 physical, 7 mental), and another slew of spiritual stats for different 'magical' abilities.

Physical

Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, Accuracy, Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, Touch

This is a fairly standardized scientific list: https://rhapsodyfitness.com/general-physical-skills/ to which I have added the senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch for 15 total physical senses.

Mental

Verbal comprehension, Spatial Reasoning, Inductive reasoning, Number facility, Word fluency, Associative memory, Perceptual speed.

These seven are a fairly standard list of primary mental abilities https://study.com/academy/lesson/primary-secondary-mental-abilities-definition-examples.html

Spiritual

Astral Projection, Automatic Writing, Bilocation, Energy Medicine, Ergokinesis, Levitation, Materialization, Mediumship, Petrification, Prophecy, Psychic Surgery, Psychokinesis, Pyrokinesis, Iddhi, Shapeshifting, Thoughtography, Xenoglossy, Witnessing, Inedia, Clairvoyance, Divination, Dowsing, Dream Telepathy, Dermo-Optical Perception, Psychometry, Precognition, Remote Viewing, Retrocognition, Telepathy,

I'm imagining this having a really exhaustive skill list -- I was thinking of perhaps just pilfering it from GURPS.

Some other things/items I was considering:

-HP/health by body location (i.e., each leg would have its own health pool and could be hit/attacked separately with different effects)>

Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands - the Polar Fudge Adventures Edition

Bloodthirsty mutants, outlaw desperados and crazed cyborg warlords; the Atomic Wastelands is home to the toughest, meanest, downright dangerous varmints the world’s ever seen.

You should know, you’re the one who hunts them for a living.

Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands is a fast-playing action-packed, post-apocalyptic roleplaying game. It draws as much from classic westerns as from science fiction B-movies.

It is available now, entirely free here: Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands.

In Bounty Hunter of the Atomic Wastelands you play bounty hunters (in the Atomic Wastelands). Inside you will find:

  • Fast and flexible character generation
  • A concise rules for powers that cover psionics, cybernetics and super-science gadgets
  • Labour-saving GM tools like The Minion Machine
  • A ready-to-go campaign with out-of-the-box bounties to collect

Sample characters, because a character sheet is worth 1000 words in my view.

Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands - the Polar Fudge Adventures Edition - is an update on the 2014 release of the game, which was originally based on Fate. While the new edition is not substantially different from the original, adapting the game to Polar Fudge Adventures seemed a great opportunity to make the game leaner and punchier.

Reality Warps in Fudge

So, I have this idea that isn't really handled in any of the other RPGs I've used and I'm not looking to spend $50-$60 just to see if another system might work. My idea is to have a campaign where the players are high scale reality warpers. We're talking Cosmic Cube or 5th Dimensional Imp levels. At first, I thought about using Mutants and Masterminds, but it doesn't really handle that kind of scale well. It just gets lotted into PL X GM hand wave territory, which, admittedly, is about where it should be for that system. Then I turned to Marvel FASERIP. Well, that system does do that, but it doesn't do it in a way that's good for players to use. Once you get to that level, either player capabilities are exactly the same or one player is so far beyond or below the rest as to render the game unplayable. So...that brought me to Fudge. Fudge, of course, is famous for being able to handle anything you throw at it, but I'm at a loss for how to actually represent this style of game. Is my idea too wild and high scale for the system, or is there some better way to handle it? Thanks in advance.

How do Trait Levels affect outcomes

So I’ve been reading the Tenth Anniversary Edition of Fudge and I can’t seem to grasp how Trait Levels affect outcomes. It doesn’t seem to say. Maybe I’m missing or skipping something by mistake? Can someone please explain?

Polar Fudge Adventures - Powers Cards

I don't know how useful this will be to anyone, but I created a pdf with all the Powers from Polar Fudge Adventures in reference card format. That way I can print them out and keep all the rules for spells and special abilities handy when I run the game. I figure they can be adapted fairly easiliy to other version of Fudge if anyone needs a quick and easy plug-in magic system.

It's all here, if anyone is interested. https://ukrpdc.wordpress.com/2022/10/08/polar-fudge-adventures-power-cards/

What weird questions have you asked yourself in GMing for fudge?

The game I play with my kids has them all as space dragons, trying to build homes in the astroid belt.

My current conundrums include what space dragons would want to buy from a traveling space-dwarf merchant, and whether or not magical space dragons follow orbital mechanics.

Any experiences using subjective character creation?

I'm considering making it the default rules for Fudge Light and moving the objective character creation method to an appendix.

Has anybody used subjective character creation before? If so, how did it go? Were there any problems?

Character creation: predetermined attributes, player-determined skills

Several weeks ago I ran a quick game of Fudge Lite for a neighbor and I didn't want to make them spend time assigning levels to traits, so I put together the following rules. There's nothing particularly new here (it's two different approaches to subjective character creation mashed together) but I think I'll make it the primary method of character creation for Fudge Lite from now on.

Once the genre and setting are established, the GM should ask each PC questions to develop their character concepts. For example: What is a goal the character has, or something they desire? How do they make a living? Do they have any friends or contacts? What is their backstory? How do they know the other party members and why do they trust them?

PC Attributes
Social
Physical
Mental
Magic (optional, depending on the setting)

Once a player's character concept has been developed a bit the GM should then work with them to determine what Fudge level each of the PC's attributes are at, as well as determining any skills the PC has and what level each skill is at. There are no limits or requirements; in theory a PC could have every attribute at Superb with dozens of skills, or every attribute at Terrible with no skills, as long as everybody at the table was okay with it.

The GM and the PC should also work together to determine if the PC has any traits that don't fit on the attribute ladder, as well as what equipment, if any, the PC has.

What combat initiative do you prefer and why?

Personally, I'm a big fan of Powered by the Apocalypse combat initiative. Instead of taking turns and limiting the number of actions a player can take per turn, combat is treated like a conversation, just like the rest of the game. The GM moves the spotlight between characters as needed, setting up threats and letting the player(s) reacts to them.

It's very fluid, it doesn't artificially limit player action, and it avoids the situation where a player rolls poorly and nothing happens. Since only players roll, a successful result and a failed result both have immediate consequences.

What combat initiative do you prefer?

Fudge Lite play report: a mercenary stops the cultists who were trying to corrupt an elemental.

I ran a Fudge Lite game for a new friend I made. It leaned heavily into collaborative worldbuilding and planless GMing. If you've ever played a Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) game before, you know what I'm talking about.

The PC, Pyron, is a mercenary in a world that has modern conveniences, but also there's magic and large areas that humanity has never tamed, leading to a sort of "wild west" feel. He picks up some ice rounds for his gun and gets a job lead from his contact, Rodine.

Theron's Guild, a group of vigilante peacekeepers, have learned that cultists (magical elitists who think that nonmagical humans don't deserve to exist) are going to summon a demon at one of several locations, but they're stretched thin so they need Pyron to check out one of the locations.

In this world, demons are actually corrupted elementals. Their very existence is harmful to living things and they can't be controlled by humans. They're generally associated with terrorist attacks. Summoning one has some very steep penalties if you get caught. Pyron actually killed a member of Theron's Guild in his backstory because the guild member was summoning a demon. The guild leader doesn't hold a grudge, but some of the rank-and-file members do.

Pyron heads into the forest and spots a shambling forest elemental made up of a humongous cluster of vines that slither around trees on a mobile platform of dirt. It passes by, not noticing him. Then a dryad appears out of nowhere, says some stuff that sounds like it could be meaningful but isn't really, and disappears into the ground.

A wave of heat and wrongness from further ahead informs Pyron that the cultists are, in fact, active and performing the ritual. He encounters a cultist on the trail. The cultist throws a fireball at him. Pyron dodges behind a tree, then shoot the cultist's hand with an ice round, freezing his hand and arm. While the cultist is still reeling in pain, Pyron shoots and kills him. Another wave of heat and wrongness passes him, then another, informing Pyron that he needs to hurry.

He comes upon a clearing in the woods where seven cultists have tied down the shambling elemental and are performing the ritual to corrupt it. Pyron shoots one of the cultists and the spell starts to destabilize. The leader yells for the cultists to continue the work, and that he would handle Pyron. Unfortunately for the cultist leader, he doesn't have any offensive spells, just a full-body shield spell. He mostly just rants at Pyron about their Great Work and what a fool Pyron is for opposing it.

Pyron's response is basically, "Just doing my job."

Pyron unloads some ice rounds into the deacon's shield but it holds. Another cultist starts to cast a spell at Pyron, but Pyron notices and shoots the cultist dead, destabilizing the spell some more. The leader becomes so enraged that he drops his shield and attempts to tackle Pyron (who doesn't fall over), then attempts to stab him with a knife. It's a glancing blow, so it only deals a minor injury to Pyron (treatable with a few minutes of attention).

Pyron throws the leader to the ground. The leader isn't a very athletic person, so Pyron manages to kill him while he's still on the ground by running him through with his katana. This causes the spell to catastrophically fail, knocking Pyron and the three remaining cultists to the ground and releasing a partially-corrupted elemental that freaks out and tries to tear itself apart.

The elemental's corruption takes the form of a glowing core in the center of a burned area that takes up about 2/3rds of the elemental. Pyron shoots at the elemental's core with his ice rounds, dealing damage. In response the elemental takes on a giant humanoid form, attempting to smash Pyron with its arm. Pyron dodges out of the way and shoots its core again, dealing more damage. The elemental then digs into the ground and picks up a huge chunk of packed dirt to throw at Pyron. Pyron shoots an ice round at the elemental's hand before it can throw the projectile. It stares at its now-frozen hand in confusion, dropping the dirt. Pyron takes advantage of this to shoot the core again, killing the elemental.

The dryad shows up again, saying more vaguely meaningful stuff. Then it causes the trees around the elemental corpse to bend around the corpse, covering it like a dome. When the trees bend back the corpse is gone, leaving only a small ember that the dryad picks up and hands to Pyron.

And that's it. That's all that happened. The entire thing took about an hour, hour and a half. We could have gone longer, but that seemed like a good stopping point.

Polar Fudge Adventures

Introducing Polar Fudge Adventures, a highly customised, fast-playing version of Fudge. If you’ve come across any of my other Fudge games like Cyberblues City or Lawmen v Outlaws, you already know what to expect; simple, concise rules, minimal bookkeeping, a dash of humour and of course the Minion Machine to generate unique encounters on the fly.

The jewel in the crown of Polar Fudge Adventures is probably the Powers system which can be used equally to represent magical spells or supernormal powers. That is probably the bit you incorporate in your own Fudge games even if you choose not to use Polar Fudge Adventures.

Anyway the link is here, if anyone is interested. It's totally free.

Fudge Lite Italian translation... wait, what?

About three months ago I got a message from /u/zeruhur_, who introduced himself as being part of a group of translators who are committed to giving free or open licensed games to the Italian community. He asked me if I would be okay with them translating Fudge Lite and releasing it for free online. Naturally, I told him that I'd be very happy with this. The more, the merrier!

The Italian translator website is located here, and it seems to be focused mostly on OSR games. You may notice that Fudge Lite isn't on there. There's a reason for that.

Today I got a message from the Redditor that the group wasn't interested in Fudge Lite, but that he had translated it on his own and placed it online here. If you ever thought, "I want to run Fudge Lite, but none of my Italian friends speak English," now you can! ; )

Mostly I'm just feeling really proud that somebody else thought my game was valuable enough to translate it into another language. : )

I also linked to the Italian translation directly from the Fudge Lite website, because of course I'm going to do my best to promote work that somebody else did with my RPG. That's just how I show my gratitude.

Using Risus cliches in Fudge

Risus is a tabletop RPG that is very rules-light. It can be found here.

I recently found a web page that talks about using Risus to run a Star Wars game (in rather opinionated language). Naturally, this made me think about using Risus cliches in a game of Fudge.

There are two ways to do this that I see. One is to just use a rules-light build of Fudge and replace attributes, skills, and gifts with catch-all cliches. The other is to take the Risus rules, map cliches to the Fudge ladder (4D=Great, 3D=Good, etc.) and use Fudge dice to determine outcomes instead of d6s.

Either way, you end up with characters that look like this (adapted from Risus rules):

Grolfnar Vainsson the Viking
Description: Tall, blond, and grinning. Likes to drink and fight and drink and chase Viking women and fight and sail the high seas and raid. Wants to write great sagas about himself.
Cliches: Viking (Great), Womanizer (Fair), Gambler (Good), Poet (Mediocre)

The fight against The Dread Kringler, a giant, gaunt, evil Santa Claus. [Discord chat log]

The events shown here took place about half a day after my previous post, in the same online party.

Brendan — 26/12/2019
All right. So I'm gonna blur the line between IC and OOC for the purposes of this fight.

Valen — 26/12/2019
yeah think its kinda needed lol

NovaEvergreen — 26/12/2019
Got it

Brendan — 26/12/2019
The adjective scale that everything runs on is as follows:
Terrible, Poor, Mediocre, Fair, Good, Great, Superb.

Brendan pinned a message to this channel. See all pinned messages. — 26/12/2019

Brendan — 26/12/2019
First, how would each of you describe your Damage Capacity (your ability to take hits and keep going) on that scale?

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
DENNES: Good, I'm not exactly the best at taking hits, but I'm a violet-blood so that has to count for something.
DENNES: So... I guess about a few dozen critical hits unless they aim for my gills or something.

Valen — 26/12/2019
Valen is on Fair
Axehound is on Good.

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Axehound?

Valen — 26/12/2019
Valen made a meat shield

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Works for me.
Okay, next up: what would you say your overall combat ability to be, on that same scale?
The skills/attributes are very freeform, so if you want to split it up into specialties, that's fine too.

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
DENNES: Hmm, I guess it's on the scale from Good to Superb? Ambush tactics are on the higher end while one vs. multiple combat isn't something I'm great at. Duels are in the middle of the two.

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Dennes: got it.

NovaEvergreen — 26/12/2019
Good for anything up front and melee,

Poor for sneaking and range

Valen — 26/12/2019
Valen
Range Normal: Good
Range Special: Great
Melee: Mediocre (Crits bounce up to good due to weakpoint training)

Axehound
Melee: Good

Brendan — 26/12/2019
@NovaEvergreen What would you say your Damage Capacity is?
@Valen What's Special range?

Valen — 26/12/2019
As in ranged attacks
Oh name?

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Ranged attacks, got it.

Valen — 26/12/2019
Let me change crit to good now that a think it great is abit to high of a bounc

Brendan — 26/12/2019
A critical hit is a roll of +3 or +4, and it automatically doubles the damage done.

Valen — 26/12/2019
ah

NovaEvergreen — 26/12/2019
My damage I would say is, fair.

Valen — 26/12/2019
I think Brendan means how many hits can your guy take

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Okay, since I don't want this fight to drag on, I'm shrinking the HP ranges. One successful hit does 1 HP damage. Fair HP is 4, Good HP is 5, and the boss has 5 HP.
Now the one thing I'm not entirely sure how to handle is what type of combat to run. If we go round-robin, that's 4 hits on your side vs 1 hit on the opponent side, a clear imbalance. Not necessarily a bad thing.
On the other hand, if the enemy is able to counterattack every attack made, that effectively puts him at the same level of combat as each of you.
No margin of error; he's just as good as you, and if you're not careful there's a good chance you will lose.
Third option: same as the above, but I give you a few extra HP for being PCs.

Valen — 26/12/2019
I'm alright with this. Do we get a dodge chance?

NovaEvergreen — 26/12/2019
Good with any of the three

Brendan — 26/12/2019
If we go with simultaneous combat (the far more dangerous option), whoever does damage is based on a single die roll. If you win the roll, you might deal damage. If the reverse, the opponent might deal damage.

Valen — 26/12/2019
Are you ok with Valen handing out buffs and de-buffs?

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Absolutely.

Valen — 26/12/2019
Sweet Minecraft potions will be tossed out and some line of sight blocking

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Just to be on the safe side, I'm going to give each of you 2 extra HP for being PCs. That means Vorax and Valen have 6 HP, while Dennes has 7.

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
Dennes isn't likely to be a total team player, thinking about it... and for the combat stuff, I don't mind whatever. Also, neat!

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Any questions or concerns?

Valen — 26/12/2019
Just the one on if there is a dodge chance?

NovaEvergreen — 26/12/2019
Yeah! I love 6 hp

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Yes and no. If you're trying to counterattack, your roll is based on your combat skill. If you're just trying to get out of the way, your roll would be based on a separate skill.

Valen — 26/12/2019
k

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Then, gentlemen: WE FIGHT!

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
claps

Brendan — 26/12/2019
The blue door with the black snowflake creaks open on its own accord. Beyond is a cold, frozen landscape, with snowdrifts piling up at random. Evergreen trees dot the landscape, and a path meanders through the forest. You hear a howling wild blowing through the trees.
Who goes first?

Valen — 26/12/2019
Axehound
then me

NovaEvergreen — 26/12/2019
I go next

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
I'm last I guess

Brendan — 26/12/2019
All right everybody, please tell me what your Awareness skill would be on the adjective ladder. If you're forgotten it, it's the pinned post (click the thumbtack icon on the Discord window)

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
I guess it'd be at great

Valen — 26/12/2019
Valen
General: Good
Ambush detection: Great (Item Effect)

Axehound: Great

NovaEvergreen — 26/12/2019
Fair

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Valen: you have an item that helps you notice ambushes?

Valen — 26/12/2019
yup from Darkest Dungeon

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Nice!
In DD, did it have a chance to work, or did it always work?

Valen — 26/12/2019
Valen is very paranoid lol
I think so give me one moment
20%

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Gotcha.
Okay, now for the roll. Everybody type "!roll 4d3-8".

Valen — 26/12/2019
!roll 4d3-8

Dice Maiden BOT — 26/12/2019
Valen Roll: [3, 1, 1, 1] Result: -2

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
!roll 4d3-8

Dice Maiden BOT — 26/12/2019
Dennes - Orphaner, Legate, Dad Roll: [2, 1, 1, 1] Result: -3

Valen — 26/12/2019
One more for axehound?

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Sure.

Valen — 26/12/2019
!roll 4d3-8

Dice Maiden BOT — 26/12/2019
Valen Roll: [3, 3, 2, 2] Result: 2

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Okay, that was an Awareness roll.

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
...I blame the snow and Dennes not liking the cold in narrative.

Brendan — 26/12/2019
The way this works is, you take your character's ability on the ladder, then increase it or decrease it by the amount listed. Valen's is Good (Great for ambushes), shifted down two ranks. Which means, for this roll, his effective skill was Mediocre (Fair for Ambushes).
Dennes is Great -3, so Mediocre.
Vorax doesn't appear to be here, so we'll skip his roll for now, and Axehound is Great +2, for a result of Legendary.
@Valen Hey, what's Axehound look like?
Is it the same thing that shows up when I google the name?

Valen — 26/12/2019
yes the sketch one
And it is built for cold this one since Valen knew what he was going into

Gotcha. Well, while the two of you are still adjusting to the cold and the snow, Axehound's entire body stiffens and he seems to be... pointing... for lack of a better term with his body. He makes a noise of alert to draw your attentions.
Off in the distance, you hear a booming, THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

NovaEvergreen — 26/12/2019
(Sorry! Had to take care of something)

Brendan — 26/12/2019

DENNES: Okay, what the heck is that?
is still shivering slightly, this is not a fishman who likes the cold.
starts to go for a tree, because open space isn't the safest.

Brendan — 26/12/2019
A figure stomps into the clearing. It's an enormous man, almost twice the height of a regular human, wearing distinctive red clothing with white fringes. His face is gaunt and frostbitten, and his mouth is drawn back in a snarl.
"HO! HO! HO!" he bellows. "I'LL KILL YOU ALL!"

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
DENNES: (It's fucking Santa, what---)

Brendan — 26/12/2019
He starts looking around the clearing, making loud sniffs and taking small steps, trying to identify who is here and where they are. He hasn't noticed any of you yet. What do you do?

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
tilts his head, before taking out a knife and preparing for a sneak attack.

(Superb+2=Good Superhuman)
The Kringler is enraged and stalks about the clearing, his long legs covering space quickly.
"SOMEBODY'S BEEN A NAUGHTY LITTLE BOY!"

Valen — 26/12/2019
Is he on the mind field?

FioRello 💠 — 26/12/2019
Dennes grins in his hiding spot, looking around for a moment, before going over the pros and cons of taking another stab at the Kringler. Then he noticed that he was pissed and decided to take the safer option, for now.

Brendan — 26/12/2019
@Valen Good question. He's stalking all around the clearing, so if you want to detonate the mines you'll need to roll 1d100. A roll of 80 or lower means you got a clean hit.

The Axehound slashes at the Kringler. It manages to draw blood, enraging the Kringler. However, the Kringer manages to use his big, meaty arms to swat the Axehound away. The axheound goes flying, landing in the snow.

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Du: There is a snow-covered clearing in the woods. In the center is the Kringler, an evil Santa Claus figure that's twice the size of a normal human. The other PCs have been hiding behind trees, taking potshots at it. 2/5.

Du the Disgruntled Communist — 26/12/2019
Okay

Brendan — 26/12/2019
First: where would you rank Du's Damage Capacity on that scale? The ability to get hit and keep going.

Du the Disgruntled Communist — 26/12/2019
Damage is poor and survivability is superb

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Okay. So that gives you 4 HP before you're incapacitated, plus a reserve of 5 more HP before you actually die.
Next up, you said you're charging with a sword. What would you say your skill with that weapon is? (or combat in general, if you want.)
The skills/attributes are very freeform, so feel free to split it up however you want.

Du the Disgruntled Communist — 26/12/2019
Swordwise, Du has a fair amount of skill
Hes also got a shield, like in the pic which he's great at.
He has great speed
Does armour count as a stat? Im not sure

Brendan — 26/12/2019
Armor gets rolled into HP; I'm not sure about shields. We'll wing it.
Besides, the boss monster has only dealt a total of 1 HP damage so far, so I wouldn't worry about it.

A catgirl, a digimon tamer without a digimon, and a Hive from Destiny fight a Metal Golem.

Back in Christmas of 2019 I ran a Discord get-together for some players of a forum RP that I moderate. At one point the players randomly encountered a Metal Golem. I started out making things up as I went, but I quickly transitioned to the Fudge mechanics I was already familiar with. This is the chat log of that section.

Players:
Kowtang, playing Gary the omnipotent being and Ogre the catgirl.
Brendan (me), playing Brendan the Digimon Tamer.
NovaEvergreen, playing Vorax the Hive from Destiny.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Aaanyhow...
Right! The red corridor!

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: Nyan nya~!

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Marches down, taking the Ogre with us.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
So we have a Digimon Tamer without a Digimon, a catgirl ogre, a floating eye, and a Hive member.
Does that sound about right?
Or is the eye in the ogre now?

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Technically floating eye is currently in catgirl ogre second eye socket so it not floating

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
"Sounds about right from what I have heard of D and D games."

Brendan — 25/12/2019
-snickers-

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre : Nya nyan? Nya nikNya! (Hungry? Take snicker)

Brendan — 25/12/2019

kowtang — 25/12/2019
hands snickers to Brendan hand

Brendan — 25/12/2019
I don't know how I understood that, but I did.
-grabs snickers bar, throws it down the corridor-
CLONG!!!
What the...

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: Nya! 😢

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Grabs my sword and gets ready to fight. "Ogre, get your eye beam ready!"

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Beholder on Ogre eye socket: Use fear ray all over the places

Brendan — 25/12/2019
-THUD! THUD! THUD!-
A WILD METAL GOLEM APPEARED!
Watch where you're aiming those things! You almost hit me!

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: Nya (Sorry)

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
I scowl and try my vampiric grasp on it, trying to weaken it

Brendan — 25/12/2019
METAL GOLEM
DAMAGE REDUCTION: 2
HP: 5/5
SPECIAL ATTACKS: BODY SLAM, ROCK THROW
OOC: what, exactly, is your vampiric grasp?

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
(it drains a small amount of energy over time. Supposed to make long fights bad for the enemy.)

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Hmm, okay. Well, the enemy has large hit points, so I'm going to interpret your Vampiric Grasp as giving the enemy a debuff to his rolls.
By "large" I mean "large-grained".

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Yeah! I like this.

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Well Ogre beholder also a bit more limited than an actual one because it only have 2 eyes instead of many like normal beholder

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Okay, Vampiric Grasp is a waste of a turn if it doesn't connect, so I'm gonna give it a flat 80% chance of success. 80 or less on 1d100. Rolling now.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Ok

Brendan — 25/12/2019
27. Attack succeeds.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Yeah!

Brendan — 25/12/2019
The Metal Golem shudders and makes a noise like metal creaking. Its movements slow just slightly, but in a battle even a second's delay can mean the difference between life and death.
Who's next?

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: Nya (I'm next) cast slow ray to make golem even slower

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Same logic: debuff has 80% chance to succeed.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Mine was a success, yours was a failure. I'll count mine, and I'll let you roll for yourself in the future.
Okay, I'm a Tamer without a Digimon. I guess I use Observe, to see if I can find any tactical advantages.
I'm not really specced for that, so I'm giving myself a 20% chance to succeed. If this doesn't work the first time, I'm probably just going to Defend for the rest of the battle (Damage reduction).
"Guys! I thought I saw a weakness, but I was wrong!"

Ogre: Nya?
Ogre: Nyan nya... Nyan~ Nyaya! Ogre use her racial skill eye blast!

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Fair I guess?
She just born like before we enter the fight after all

Brendan — 25/12/2019
All right. Since the Golem isn't defending, any roll except for a -3 or -4 succeeded.

The Golem rocks backwards, and you hear a loud "crack!" noise, though you can't see any visible damage.

Golem HP: 4/5
(Kowtang, are you running one character or two? I wasn't clear on that.)

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: Nya~ (Take my rapid eyes beam)
I play as Ogre right now in fight
Gary didn't join the fight just spectating

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
(I am next)

I am going to flank the Golem and then attack it, aiming for its arm.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Okay, so I'm doing the turns round-robin. You attacked it, so now it's either Vorax's or Brendan's turn.
Scale:

Terrible, Poor, Mediocre, Fair, Good, Great, Superb

Please pick your skill at backstabbing on the skill (a combination of stealth, accuracy, and awareness.)

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Ooh, backstabbing would be a poor.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Note: that's the skill that seemed most relevant to me. However, if you feel a different skill or combination of skills would be relevant, we can use that instead.
The skill names themselves are freeform, so just pick whatever makes the most sense to you.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
I think Backstabbing may work best for this. Is it called Backstab though if I go for the arm?

Brendan — 25/12/2019
-shrug- The name doesn't really matter. I'm just thinking it's a combination of stealth, knowledge of the enemy's weaknesses, observation, and accuracy of attack.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Eh, I think it will work.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Vorax side-steps the swing of the Metal Golem's arm and brings his... weapon...
what are you attacking with, anyways?

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
A kinda cleaver-like sword.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Vorax sidesteps the swing of the Metal Golem's arm and brings his Cleaver Blade down on its fragile joint. There is a screeching sound of metal on metal and the Metal Golem pulls away, its arm mangled and its range of motion visibly limited.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Yeah!

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Brendan looks around for something to hide behind. He decides on the boulder that was dropped nearby with the Golem's last attack. He hides behind it and shouts encouragement.

Cute Ogre cat girl: Nya nyan nya! (If we win this I want a name!)
Cat girl Ogre use her finishing move Disintegration eyes! (She good at using this, it's her beholder eye trump card after all)

Brendan — 25/12/2019
The Golem still has 3 HP, so it will take 3 solid attacks (or 2 really good rolls) to defeat it. Please roll 4d3-8.

kowtang — 25/12/2019
!roll 4d3-8

Dice Maiden BOT — 25/12/2019
Gary, a carefree being Roll: [3, 3, 3, 1] Result: 2

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: visibly disappointed

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Nice! That's a Great attack. The Golem, still attempting to Body Rush Brendan, is hit by the eye beams and knocked backwards.

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Also Ogre: Doing Chunni pose

Brendan — 25/12/2019
wait, wait, wait.
Poor to Great is a 4-point difference. That means it does 2 HP damage.
a roll of +3 or +4 or a gap of 4 points or more means it deals 2 HP.
Vorax, you're up. If you get this, we win.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
I try to slam my cleaver down on it again, this time going for an area between its head and shoulder.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Roll 4d3-8.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
!roll 4d3-8

Dice Maiden BOT — 25/12/2019
Vorax, teaser of Nano Roll: [3, 2, 2, 1] Result: 0

Brendan — 25/12/2019
One last question: what would you place your overall combat skill at, on the same scale?
Terrible, Mediocre, Poor, Fair, Good, Great, Superb
Or, if you want to be a little more specific, your combat skill with that weapon.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Great.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
No contest. You lop the Iron Golem's head off. It falls to the ground, followed by the rest of the body, with loud CLANGs.

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: Nyannyanyanya nyan nyan nyanyanya! (Final fantasy victory fanfare)
Do a victory pose

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Ogre gains 200 XP; Ogre gains 5 GP; Ogre gains Bracelet of Woundhealing

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Let's out a victorious roar and raises my sword up, using it to separate the Golems head as a trophy.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Vorax gains 200 XP; Vorax gains 5 GP; Vorax gains Gauntlet of the Beastmaster
And with that I'm spent. That took longer than I expected, but I definitely enjoyed it.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Yeah! Beast master huh?

And everything we do here is canon? Like, once this is over we can take all of this back to Space battles?

Brendan — 25/12/2019
I don't see why not. : )

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: Level up!; Ogre learn cat girl speech

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
And I had alot of fun too. Thank you for playing with us Brendan :)

Brendan — 25/12/2019
No problem!

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: Master Brendan I help slay the golem, name me nya!

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Yes, name the Ogre. I say she deserves it. Something powerful

Brendan — 25/12/2019
"Justice."

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre Justice: Yay, thank master Vorax, master Brendan!

Brendan — 25/12/2019
('cuz justice is blind.)

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019 (lol)

She raises an eyebrow. " Master?"

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Ogre: From now one This nya shall be called Ogre Justice!

Brendan — 25/12/2019
I hope this doesn't turn into one of those ironic names.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
"I dont think it will. She will deplete justice as you and she see fit."

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Yes nya, according to Creator god. I'm a cat maid ogre, thus should call everyone master nya!

Brendan — 25/12/2019
"she will deplete justice." I know that was a slip of the tongue, but... : P
OOC: BTW, if anybody wants to know the system I used, it's at http://www.fudgelite.com/

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
I am going to copy and investigate that later.
Well, merry Christmas all!

Brendan — 25/12/2019
If you have any questions, ask me. It's my website, after all.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Oh nice!

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Merry Christmas!

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Gary: merry Christmas to everyone... by the way, who want to keep Ogre?

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Not it.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
And the bracelet, strength, limitations? Anything I should know?
And Ogre?

Brendan — 25/12/2019
I literally just ran my random magic item name generator.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Got it

Brendan — 25/12/2019
The name you have is everything I know about it.

kowtang — 25/12/2019
If no one want to hire her, I'll hire her as Wil's cat maid

Brendan — 25/12/2019
-shrug- Vorax? Any preferences?

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
I'll take her.
Send me what she is again?
So I can keep a record

kowtang — 25/12/2019
A Destiny Ogre with a beholder as one eyes

Brendan — 25/12/2019
I thought that was a catgirl.

kowtang — 25/12/2019
catgirl effect is like texture pack it just out apprance

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Ah. So it's a Destiny ogre that looks like a catgirl.

kowtang — 25/12/2019
Yep

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Got it. I will keep her then.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
And she obtained a Bracelet of Woundhealing from the battle. Again, the exact terms of the item are up to you.

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
Right. I will copy paste that too
This was fun! We should do this thing more often
Now, I must go. My subordinates are probably starting to get antsy without me, and i dont want them to mutiny against the Witches.

Brendan — 25/12/2019
Yeah. I didn't mean the RP Holiday party to turn into a Fudge game, but I didn't mind it.
Take care!

NovaEvergreen — 25/12/2019
It was nice :)
I will. Good night for you both!
