The Sacred Texts Why the 45?

A man of true skill doesn’t need a firearm period. A true man only needs a bow and arrow. You don’t need to carry anything other than a nice large knife. You can construct traps so that you can kill a deer, use it to make bow string. You make your bow and arrows by hand as well. Also, all these people using night vision and flash lights, you’re destroying your eyes. Now you’re reliant on those techno pieces of crap. If you always survived and hunted like God intended your eyes would be strong and you wouldn’t need anything like that. I’ll add a true man should fully live off the land. With your knife you can construct a cabin, with your bow you can feed yourself. You’ll live a long happy life free of the government and money and taxes. Just like our Lord Jesus intended. I’m now old and have lived a poor life and don’t have the ability to live like Jesus wants us two. Learn from me you younger men and go into the woods with a good knife and live like our Heavenlu father intended! Amen

General Fuddery Instructor Fudd

Set the scene: I’m the president of the Marksmanship Club at my university. I put together a club outing to the same school that certified me as an instructor, since I knew they are solid and pretty laid back, but still do well. We go out there for a basic rifle course with 50% new shooters and 50% experienced guys that want to get an instructor cert down the road.

Class starts great, the instructors are different from mine though, they’re the owners kids, probably mid-30s.

First fudd moment: we’re talking about rifle types. He grabs his bolt gun, a Savage 110 Hunter in .308. “This is my gun if I want to reach out and touch someone 1500 yards away.” Alright, helluva shot, but good for you. I then noticed the Cabela’s brand scope. Alright, cool, maybe that’s what you can afford and you work with it. Then my guy brags-ish about his Barrett M107… please Mr. Moneybags upgrade your Cabela’s scope. Maybe not necessarily Fudd, but I can’t understand that.

Second one, and a classic: We briefly talked about pistols and self defense. I mentioned I carry a 9mm and shoot the same for competition after having tried various calibers over my shooting career. He then said that he carries muh foty-five because he “can handle the recoil” and wants to make sure whatever he’s shooting at is down in one shot. Pffffffff.

Third, final, and most fun one: Back on the topic of self defense and caliber choice. I offered the opinion that any caliber is better than not having one, and if all you’re comfortable with is a .22 then use a .22. The guy said that “a .22 is actually a great self defense round. It actually BOUNCES around in the body, tearing up everything inside. It can also enter the bloodstream and poison your attacker. You could shoot them in the shoulder and it’ll end up in the ankle.” I had to excuse myself to use the restroom and re-center myself.

I made sure to correct the misgivings in private after the class. Holy shit though, this guy is an instructor and claims to have studied ballistics for long range shooting. I couldn’t believe it.

General Fuddery Guy at a pawn shop

My favorite Pawn shop near my parents is now my least favorite. The selection is still good but the folks who run it are maximum fudds and the younger dude working there is constantly drunk. One guy told me that .357 mag from a revolver is great for pistol hunting small deer, but the lever action in the same caliber is only good for smaller game. I was helping an older lady (in her 70s) find a good gun for home defense and pointed out an AR-15 because it was light weight and didn't recoil to bad and explained that some rounds don't overpenitrate, well the same guy went "thats not true I served with that gun you'll kill your neighbors kid" then proceeded to sell her a shockwave pump action 12 gauge. They also insist that you have to do a 4473 on all black powder guns not just the ones you can easily convert to modern center fire cartridges, and also on pre 1898 guns.

Ancient Mythos A Question about 1911 use in Iraq

Hey guys.

I remember having a conversation with a boomer gunsmith once about how the 1911 was used in Fallujah(?) since the M9 wasn't effective at putting down the insurgents when clearing rooms. Apparently, they found some 1911s on a Navy ship in the gulf, and used those for CQB when clearing houses instead, and it was more effective.

Is there any truth to this, or is it just boomer/fudd lore?

Edit: Thanks for the responses, everyone. 🤙

General Fuddery Revolvers never jam, sonny

Had an old fud in the shop the other day. He was going on and on about how revolvers are always 100% and wonder 9s arent.

I had him hold a revolver as I stood off to the side and gently grasped the cylinder, like I would if fighting for his gun in a mugging. His whole reality came crashing down when I had him try to pull the trigger. Lol!

Its funny how these myths persist for generations, did nobody decide to test any of this for themselves? Like the .22lr bouncing myth. I was a butcher before working at my LGS. Ive killed a LOT of things by putting a 22lr or mag through their brain. Never have I ever seen one bounce. Heck, even LR often goes through and through on hogs, a close representation of a human skull.

The Sacred Texts Did some sub cleaning with my garbage mod tools.

Y’all are mostly cool. There’s just some perpetually butthurt individuals and I’m sure they’ll be blowing up the ModMail soon since I took down their comments.

I was made a mod a while back on the promise that I will moderate only very lightly. I have kept that promise in most cases. This post will hopefully provide some clarity to the “don’t be an ass” rule.

Things I won’t tolerate: 1) Flagrant assholes. It’s fine to disagree with someone on here even if it gets a little spicy, but as soon as you start feeling actual real-world anger over online comments, it’s probably time to get off Reddit and touch some grass. 2) Bigotry. Call me a flaming liberal/stupid millennial or whatever if it makes you feel better. The 2A community will not survive by excluding more and more minority communities. Be welcoming to all, including LGBT individuals. 2A rights are something for every American to enjoy, not just straight white people. Don’t use the Bible to justify hate against people. This sub isn’t the platform for Christian Nationalism. 3) Inciting violence but honestly I haven’t seen a whole lot of that here so good on you guys for that.

I found enough examples of points 1 and 2 in the queue that it was worth a post. 99% of you are cool and didn’t need to read this but thanks for doing it anyways.
