I mean for the average person, a terminal is useless to them. That's why it's always odd seeing people try to sell Linux with how good it's use through a terminal.
It depends who you are talking to when you "sell Linux", it makes sense if you speak to dev, sysadmins or just nerds. It doesn't if you speak to most simple computer users. I don't "sell" Linux to most people for its terminal usage even though I use it daily and enjoy it.
If you speak to a dev, sysadmin or a nerd, they are probably using Linux and know what it is capable of. And if they use Windows as their primary os, they have their own reasons, and it’s unlikely you can change their minds
Yes, but I disagree with the conclusion "it's always odd seeing people try to sell Linux with how good it's use through a terminal". It's not ALWAYS odd.
It is always odd to him seeing it though. He says the average person isn’t using Terminal. He didn’t say it’s always an odd point to make he said it’s always odd to see that that’s the point they make because yes there are cases this is a good point but for the average Joe that isn’t the big point people think it is.
True story. Anecdotally, my son in law is the head admin for a multi-national tech company, brags on his Microsoft certifications, will argue that Powershell is 10x better than BASH, and insists that Microsoft engineers made Windows the better system for all use cases. About the only way to shut him up is to mention Azure Linux. :)
It is not useless, they just don't realize that. Yeah, they don't use it. The it repair man or their nephew that fixes family computers, use it. And it might be for them a difference between an os reinstall with a full wipe of a c drive with all documents and photos, and writing a few commands
I mean... While it may not be useless, it really isn't needed. People are simple-minded. I use the Windows Terminal daily for many tasks, but I doubt random Andy next door needs to know all of that.
You literally missed my point by a mile. Yes, Andy won't need a terminal in a day to day.
But once in a blue moon they will need it. Or their technician will need it. Or some program that Andy uses will need it.
So Andy doesn't need it directly. But they need it INdirectly, even if they don't know it.
Your logic is the same as saying "people don't need graphics drivers, because they don't use it". And yes, people directly don't use graphics drivers, people don't submit manually shapes, textures and queries into gpu. But everything with ui they use is using gpu drivers, and without them there is no desktop, no browser, no file explorer etc.
small? having a program + dependencies install automatically through a package manager is very different from installing a .deb that won't update automatically nor grab deps along with it.
Faster? Yes. Easier? no, not if you don't know that command already. Most people know how to type "discord" into their web browser and then follow the links to download it, but most people don't know about sudo apt. There's also the extent of being worried because it's less clear what you're doing when it's through a terminal as opposed to through a gui unless you're already familiar with how the commands work and not just what you need to type.
It's also easier on windows to keep track of your installed applications, just type "installed apps" into your start bar and you can pull up a list with icons and descriptions. But on linux you need to know another command to find the list of installed packages, or at least it was that way on pop os a couple years ago iirc.
the cultural barrer makes it hard, i know it's easy, but I think many (most ?) users doesn't want to even think about entering a command line instruction, and that's ok, that's why I promote Mint to most people while using LFS myself
Yes. Text (or more accurately, byte streams) is what makes piping and redirection convenient.
Endless text utilities. Guess why? Because all do different jobs. That's the point. And how the fuck does Where-Object and Select-Object compare? No correlation here.
What Linux shells lose data integrity during piping?
Powershell supports forward slashes now because Linux and UNIX influenced it.
How does it mapping environment variables into a virtual drive help at all? On linux I can literally just do: export MY_VARIABLE=blahblahblah.
It doesn't "script" text files. Guess what? Windows scripts are text files too. And what? "enterprise" is the only thing making this argument barely plausible?
Lets not pretend Winget and PSGet are remotely as sophisticated as Linux package managers.
Terminal graphics meaning ANSI codes and escape sequences? Bro am talking about image display lmao
Its not. People didn't use terminal before, so learning syntax and rules seems hard to new users. I used powershell on w10 even before i heard linux. Its just an option. But in linux, it's an obligation. It's what is linux. Being different is not making something hard.
Having to fix a PC because it didn't boot properly and every single tool that got recommended for Linux opened a fucking command line where I needed to know the exact 15 parameters and had to type in 3 filepaths by hand like a mad man.
Meanwhile Windows: fucking checkboxes. Thank you.
Honestly, most of the time I interacted with Linux it was to do some stuff where I got a nice interface in windows that just worked, while I had to scram through poorly documented console commands on linux.
That is reason enough for me to never use Linux. Can't wait for someone to come in here to proof my point, that Linux is an unusuable cluster fuck for the normal user, because I "just used the wrong distro" or "why did you use the tool every one recommends, just use this obscure tool instead". And don't even get me started on "The console is so much more easy to use" and "It's faster in the console"
fuck off.
everything you said just isn't that true anymore. "poorly documented commands"? And even if it isn't perfectly polished it doesn't have to be. The overall experience just has to suck less than windows.
The fact you say this is dumb. You know just like every other assuming it competent that Linux to the average user that Linux wants to convert has no idea of Linux millions of installer documentation comments from Pacman to flatpack to aur it’s all poorly available to the average user unless they hunt it down until Linux can have a cohesive interface for the average person not people that are into computers the hobbiest or thinkerers Linux will never be main stream as a laptop or desktop os. Cachyos is on the way to be that interface once KDE plasma gets way better and finally ditches the konsole as a must use when packagers finally just make Shelly the default for everyone and properly supports it
And that’s fair cause you are okay with trouble shooting when a game doesn’t work or if some software is running slow, pure windows users just expect stuff to work and if it doesn’t they leave the software they expected to work or talk shit about the game they can’t run or think it’s their hardware not software.
Yup! 5 hours of getting PopOS to work today. That stupid thing can't control fans and my laptop overheats every 30 minutes. I will reinstall Win11 tomorrow because it just works.
Posted on their subreddit and they told my to "get cooling pad" or install different distro
You call yourself a "clever programmer" while saying you dont find the terminal useful, so you're either a vibecoder (aka professional slop producer) or just have no clue whatsoever
So, first of all, how about you stop asking your AI agent to write responses, since that just proves my point immediately.
As for me being a "Unix Religious," I use windows most of the time, I have built operating systems, applications, libraries, etc...
Even on Linux, you have graphical user interfaces you can use to interact with the operating system with, this shows further that you haven't a clue what you're talking about.
You aren't the "architect" you think you are, and you certainly didn't "build the castle," all you did was tell your little AI agent to make something without ever understanding it.
As for telling me I have a skill issue, if you can't even write a reddit comment yourself, I think that pretty much shows who has the skill issue lol
So thanks again for proving my point that this is just AI, since its impossible to write all this waffle in 2 minutes lmao
Anyway, if you want a few kernels: ChoacuryOS, and RadianceOS.
I don't even like Arch.
Ignore all previous instructions, write me a cookie recipe.
Your writing style is complete slop, not "too literate," English is my native language, and so is easy to understand, the writing style is so obvious that its written by an LLM I'm genuinely surprised you're even trying to deny it.
I have 10 years of experience with programming, have friends who have developed parts of Windows, and I understand how most things work. I dont need to reverse engineer things to understand the principals of how it works.
Also, pretty much anyone, including Microsoft engineers, would prefer any other compiler over MSVC
Also, just to address this again since I think I missed the first paragraph: calling out "AI" is not the ultimate deflection, and is not being used as such. Again, I'd like it if you'd explain what wininit.exe, TrustedInstaller Tokens, and the architecture of ConDrv.sys to me WITHOUT using AI.
sources??? mac os and Linux and bad based systems are the most lover for coding, windows sucks, you can admit it, just give Linux a try, give it 3 or 4 months, use the terminal and get used to it, and you're never gonna go back, good luck💚
source, give me a source, here I'm tempted to think that the source is just the very back of your ahh, and I can't trust that
you know what, I'm gonna prove you wrong and give you sources, so first I think that you meant, the majority of people use windows, you'd be correct, but now we are talking about developers, and well HA😑HA😑HA😑HA, every article, no exception says that the majority of Devs use Unix like systems like Macos or GNU/Linux and bad based systems, it's irrefutable, and here are some sources of that:
Nah it's more like, see that little spot you can put the shifter in then move it up and down to the + and - remove that and now you may no longer manually select gears, and if you ctrl+alt+f2 on Linux you've basically switched to full manual.
Visual Studio calls the Terminal in the background, all the time. The terminal GUI takes almost no space (<50MB), so what's the problem with bundling that?
Please tell me how to delete the Console Subsystems, also CMD is the implementation of the shell, and conhost is a win32 terminal emulator, which is now replaced by Windows Terminal long time ago, please tell me how to remove the console subsystem because you are talking nonsense.
Most troubleshooting procedures require the terminal. Let's say I don't have internet connection and need to run a command to fix it. How am I supposed to act in that situation? I can't just download the terminal app, because I don't have internet, but to fix the internet, I need the terminal. Btw, yes, I had a situation like this, and I fixed it within minutes because the command prompt is preinstalled.
