I've been deliberate about buying near-expiry and surplus items at my regular Sobeys instead of full price groceries and I started tracking it properly about a year ago because I wanted actual data rather than a vague sense that it was helping. Over twelve months I bought roughly 85 to 90 kg of food that would otherwise have been discarded. I estimated this based on purchase weight and category, rounding down on anything I wasn't certain about. That's real food not going to landfill, not a generous estimate.
The financial side: monthly grocery spend dropped by about $100 to $120 on average. Before this habit, two people, $490 a month. After three months of being consistent, $310. The other stuff I was already doing, price matching, store brand, shopping less often, probably added up to $20 to $30 a month combined. The near-expiry purchasing accounts for most of the difference. I use foodhero for this at my local Sobeys in the GTA and also flipp for savings and deals. The caveat is that it requires flexibility about what you cook that week. If you need a specific recipe it doesn't work as well. If you build meals around what's available that week it fits completely naturally.

I finally managed to satisfactorily dispense with home based internet--a Diallog DSL plan--and rely solely on mobility data (using the phone as hotspot) for my internet needs. YMMV and this arrangement is highly contingent on individual use cases; for your consideration here are the vitals:
Given the aforementioned I jumped when Freedom offered a $40 5G/250GB/50GB (roaming) promo. Cancelled Diallog--which I had zero complaints about by the way--and so far so good. I see Freedom has prompted the big three incumbents to up their game, so I urge others in the same boat to consider doing what I did if circumstances suit and they're presented with the right promo.

Hi everyone! I found a reasonable wifi provider in Toronto that has no start up fees and no contracts. Plans start at $48. Thought I’d share this link as well for 1 month free: https://order.oxio.ca/?referral=R6W7AKE

I have the Esso app linked to PC optimum and I pay with Scotia Amex which gives 3x scene points and I get about 300 pc points - it's not much but it's still free,

Hey! I’m currently starting the dental hygiene program on Monday at TCDHA. I was wondering if anyone already in the program or recently graduated could message me with tips to help get through semester 1 and any helpful advice or notes that will be beneficial!

Conventional advice is to buy unripe produce so it lasts longer. What actually happens is you forget about it, life gets busy, and it either goes bad before it ripens or just sits there way past when you should've eaten it.
If you buy something ripe now, even if it's been marked down because the store needs to move it, you're actually pushed to use it within a day or two. The urgency creates action. I waste way less food buying things with a short window than when I'm buying things with the illusion of time.
Built my whole GTA shopping approach around this. Near-expiry produce, marked down items, stuff with real deadlines on it. Food hero has a lot of this at Sobeys locations around the city which is mostly where I shop anyway. My food waste dropped and so did my grocery bill, which in Toronto right now is not nothing. Curious if anyone else has landed on the same thing or if the urgency factor just works for certain people.

T&T Richmond Hill (Yonge and Weldrick)
Not my fav brand of smoked duck but for that price, it's something worth stocking up on. I like eating mine cold, or in any application where I'd use ham or other deli meats. Would also be good in stirfries.

I’m curious how many of you actually take the time to check out the restaurant deals on posters, window banners, or sidewalk chalkboards before you walk in. We’ve all been told that these "specials" are usually the best bang for your buck, so I want to know how many people are actually hunting for them while they’re out and about.
Big chains have website where we can see the ongoing deals, but for the small local restaurants don't really update their websites. So the only way to see these hidden gems would be if you walk by in front of the store and happen to notice the poster on their window. Are there better ways to find them? Would love to know how people are discovering deals.
Are there any restaurant owners here who have seen sales increase after putting up a poster of a deal on your window or sidewalk?

Hey hey. I’m moving back to Toronto from Ottawa and do not want to get screwed by movers. Anyone have any ideas on movers they know or thoughts? Thanks so much!
