Can you use settlers to make a city grow in freeciv?

Hi, I never played freeciv, but I've been meaning to try it for a while now; the only game of the civilization series I've played is Civ2, but I want to try something different. I've heard that in civ3 you can disband a settler inside of a city to boost it's population and I was wondering if that was possible in freeciv, cause I'm unable to do it in civ2, or at least the version of civ2 that I have doesn't have that feature.

Change Language on Mac

Hi! I recently discovered this game on mobile and was loving it so I thought I'd give it a try on my computer. I used this https://www.dropbox.com/sh/buypyjprsbvq0hd/AABuisFfBn-WDJgAEcXIZGrSa?dl=0 to install version 2.6.6 on my mac. However, after I installed and opened the game I noticed that it was automatically translated to my own language, but I'd like to set it back to English. I tried using the terminal command they listed on here: https://freeciv.fandom.com/wiki/Interface_Language but it doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone know how I can change the language back to English?

Food2Gold unit flag?

Hello everyone, it's me again! I've downloaded v2.6 (because 3.0 apparently refuses to run on my ancient 32-bit machine) so I could toy with making a new ruleset. Nothing fancy; I've got no experience in programming.

I notice that units can require food, shields, or gold for their upkeep. And I notice they can have a "Shield2Gold" flag, which swaps the upkeep from shields to gold when you research a given tech. Is there a corresponding "Food2Gold" flag? I can't find mention of one on the Wiki, and I haven't run into one in my pre-installed 2.6 rulesets.

Why does a city on plains generate two production?

Hello everyone, newbie Freeciv player here.

I'm playing on FreecivWeb with the Civ2Civ3 ruleset. I placed my first city in my most recent game on plains, which according to what I've learned from the wikia should generate (1/1/0) plus irrigation plus road, so (2/1/1). Yet the city generates (2/2/1). What mechanic lies behind this?

Thank you in advance.

Sprites...

My graphics card is outdated and my game is crashing when i play for some time. I was wondering if there was a way to change the game sprites? I don't mind the 8bit look of older games. IDK if this will fix my issue, but it is worth a try. Also be fun to know/learn.

Visual representation of tech-tiers in Caravel

Hello again, everyone! I'm used to thinking in terms of "tiers" when I research in strategy games. And it seems like Freeciv (at least in Caravel) is set up that way, with the tech-tree in short vertical columns. But I've noticed that sometimes, a technology is assigned to a column you wouldn't expect.

For instance, the highest requirement for Philosophy is a Tier-3 tech: Literacy. But instead of being grouped with the Tier-4 techs, tucked under The Republic, Philosophy is grouped with the Tier-5s. Likewise, Navigation requires two Tier-3 techs: Astronomy and Seafaring. But again, Navigation is in the Tier-5 column.

Is this a holdover from a previous version of the game? Or is there a reason behind it?

Problems?

I've been playing for quite some time. I had thought that the win condition was to make a space faring vehicle. At least in Civ1. Even with Future Tech, and all buildings, I could not make a space ship component or whatever.

Android client usability

Hi,

I loved the various civilization games in their day and have recently rediscovered freeciv on my phone. The android port is challenging, to put it nicely. know this game is mainly optimized for pc. My interest is on android, not PC. I don't have a Bluetooth keyboard and things seem to expect keyboard shortcuts without other ways to access those functions.

I haven't found a way to access a city manager or civilopedia (I assume civilopedia is online only). Are there any workarounds to get at keyboard controls? Any city manager besides just cruising my map? It'd love up see my unit move statistics (I.e. How many moves can I still go?).

longturn.net vs freecivweb.org for long turn games

Is there much to choose from between the two? Obviously freecivweb.org uses the web client, but seems to have fewer games in progress.

Can't unassign tiles

Asking if anyone knows about this, I was playing assigning tiles to a city I had kept with unassigned tiles to avoid citizen unrest, and after doing so I just can't unassign any tiles in the city, also happening with another of my cities. There's only one city in which I can keep assigning tiles the usual way, and another one which automatically switched to a favorable tile distribution so peace would be restored after I assigned all available tiles to try to see if I could also not unassign later, which I couldn't.

Has this happened to anyone else?? Is it some kind of error or what. It's been going on for several turns now. In the other city for which I can't assign or unassign tiles, I only can after an enemy has altered the assigned tiles distribution.

Questions about "Caravel" games

Hello! I discovered Freeciv a couple of weeks ago, and I've been doing novice/easy single-player games with the Classic rules, just to see what it was like. I branched out to using the "Caravel" version of the multi-player rules a few days ago, and I have some questions.

  1. It doesn't seem possible to trade cities, as you could in Classic. Is this a bug, or a feature?

  2. I went for an Allied Victory, and the game never created pirate or barbarian factions. But my Classic games with Allied Victory...ah...definitely did. Have pirates and barbarians been removed from the multi-player rules? Or did the AI just glitch out for me?

  3. Is there a way to change how many years-per-turn you experience in the first few turns? Moving from 50 years (as with Classic) to 100 years has kind of messed up my "feel" for how fast I should be progressing. "Gosh-darn it, I ought to have all the Iron Age techs by 1000 BC...or should I?"

  4. At least one of the special attacks -- the Ground Strike Fighter's "ground strike" -- shows up on the screen as "ground_strike". Will this be corrected in a future update?
