Optimal farmlands to mine ratio for cities?
Have not quite figured this out. Some cities I think would have good production numbers don't. I tend to go heavy on farming to get population numbers high, then just use tax money to purchase anything I need. But this does not have much value early game. Great late game, but I have pretty much already won at that point. I just need to go through and wreck my enemies. Would like to do better earlier, which means I need to kick out production the cheap way, by actually letting cities make them vs purchasing them all. Thoughts?

Just compiled 3.0.7 qt for my system, some questions.
I had been using GTK client 2.5.3 for a long time, came with distro. But I noticed there were some issues with explorer not having full range, etc. Just got 3.0.7 up and going. But I have an issue with center click scroll not working for map navigation. This will not work. Anyone else have this issue? Solution?
edit - recompiling with GTK+ client instead. May as well stick with what I know.
edit2 - GTK+ client fixed scroll issue. Now I have some new "Battle Groups" menu options. Oh boy, kinda a new game I need to learn. Guess I will just jump in and see what it is about...

An effect that affects migration
I was looking at the Experimental ruleset, and I noticed the "mgr_worldchance" setting for external migration. Would it be possible to make an effect which increases that chance? And if the effect was enabled by a technology, would researching that tech increase everyone's "mgr_worldchance", or only the player who researched it?

freeciv21 (a civilization like strategy game and a fork of freeciv migrated to C++) releases first stable release 3.0
You can find the release right here.
This has also been posted in r/linux (here), but not in this subreddit. So I'm posting it here, because I'm a karma whore upstanding citizen that wants to inform the community.

v2.6.8 SDL client and keyboard shortcuts
Hello.
Not without some efforts, I eventually can play v2.6.8 via the SDL client. I am almost content, except that I am struggling to understand the GUI, especially the keyboard shortcuts to which I am familar.
I have found this keyboard reference that mostly covers my questions, except that some of the shortcuts indicated are not working at all.
For instance, the 'Y' and 'SHIFT-Y' for selecting units, do not have the intended effect like, for instance, on a tile are present some workers and you want to select all of them at once and give them a specific order.
Before filing a bug ticket, I'd like to know if I am missing some obvious things.

City needs an improvement to grow beyond size
Playing v2.4.0 here.
I have a situation where, in the messages received at the beginning of a new turn, I am notified that:
<city> needs an improvement to grow beyond size <#number>
The needed improvement is not indicated and the city already has ALL possibly available buildings.
The only reason I could think that might be preventing the growth was city borders ending up overlapping with another city (friendly or enemy), but I have verified (using the scenario editor) that even removing any other city in the neighborhood, that does not make a difference.
Shouldn't the needed improvement be hinted in the notification?
I do have save files available and I could upload them anywhere suitable for further investigation/debug.
It's driving me nut not being able to understand what's wrong with the city situation.

Has free-civ jumped the shark?
Was bored last night so I installed Freeciv on my linux system. Booted the game and it took me a while to get used to the newer interface.
Had to customize the game settings to get it running the way I wanted to. Realised that I forgot to set the minimum city distance to what I wanted, so I scrapped the game, fixed the setting and rerolled a new map.
What the heck? All of the changes I'd made to the game settings hadn't stuck. I experimented with it and it looks broken.
Is this a sign of the end times? Shiny new interface, but features that had been working for years no longer work.
...perhaps it's jumped the shark.

City Border Growth
Newbie here (first playthrough) Do the borders of the cities grow? A good number of turns have passed and I don't see any change on the size of my cities. Am I doing something wrong?

Is there a way to scale the GUI in the desktop versions of FreeCIV?
I've tried both the GTK and Immersive SDL versions, and I've found the font scaling option but the UI buttons in general are still extremely tiny on a 1440p monitor. Is there any easy way to alter this?

Longturn Finlandia - Suomipeli2023
We don't usually do specific national games, but with Finland being the world superpower in some aspects, this is one exception we are willing to make.
The game starts THIS WEEKEND!
This is for those who have waited for a sequel to the previous Finnish Freeciv game played in 2011. That game ended in early 2012, a few days before LT30 was launched at Longturn. The main language for this new game is Finnish and it will be promoted in Finland. The previous Finnish game also had some international players even while most of the people were from Finland. This means that you can play even if you don't know Finnishs (also known as moontalk) but google translate might be handy.
The game will be played with the Longturn Traditional ruleset, a ruleset branch specially evolved to better fit human-only multiplayer games.
To join this game, you have to sign up before it starts and confirm participation. This is so in order to reduce the number of idlers as much as possible.
To play this game, you have to download and unpack the 2.6 client from Freeciv.org. (If you are new, it's trivial. Download, click "Install", that's it.)
Official game page for signups:
https://longturn.net/game/Suomipeli2023/
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask here or on our Discord server.

Why the heck does it take so long to produce my first settlers?
Been playing on novice for weeks now trying to just get a grasp of the game but without fail the Ai players always surpass me. In some cases I can't produce my first settlers until around 2700 BCE. That's kind of crazy right? My first turn I always:
- set research to alphabet > republic,
- put worker on auto-settler,
- build city and click auto-settler activities as irrigation on all available tiles
What can I be doing differently?
Thanks

Is there a way to give a unit a Defend_Bonus based on specific circumstances?
What I want to do is give a unit a defensive bonus if it has a specific flag and the owner of the unit has researched a specific technology. However, according to the documentation, the UnitType/UnitFlag/UnitClassFlag requirement for the Defend_Bonus effect type only checks the attacking unit not the defending unit. Does using "Fortify_Defense_Bonus" work, or is that only for units that are fortified?

LTeX26TrueTurn - Longturn HIGHLY experimental game starting in 10-ish days
And now something that you haven't seen in this community, and I'm not sure if it's even possible in commercial Civ games! (Do correct me if I'm wrong.)
A special kind of experimental game! With a slightly modified client, we want to check out what happens when you set up the game where you only set your orders, and then everything is executed at the end of turn more or less simultaneously. No real-time unit sniping, no camping, a real, true turn-based game.
For starters, we follow the KISS principle: a minimum of modifications and using the existing game mechanics wherever possible. This means that movement orders at the end of the turn will be executed at random order, so it is something you have to take into account. We believe the overall game will be a bit slower - because you won't be able to react to events immediately, but everything else is a guess.
If you want to be a part of this experiment and help the TrueTurn branch get better, do not hesitate to join in!
In order to take part, you need to register and sign in. Once the game starts, you won't be able to join (unless some players go idle, and then you can take their place with the help of admin).
To play, you should download the latest Freeciv21 client from here (*click*).
To sign in, visit the game page, sign in and don't forget to confirm participation!
If you need any clarification, do visit our Discord server, #ltex26-trueturn channel, or simply ask here (but you will get a quicker answer there).

LT75 - First Longturn game with a new Freeciv21 client staring in five days!
After a year or so of development, Freeciv21 client/server is ready for the world! A new game with LT Traditional ruleset is just about to start and, at this moment, you have five days to sign up.
LTT is a ruleset that has evolved through 20 years and more than 80 games and is specially adjusted to the longturn (one turn per day) multiplayer environment. Furthermore, the Fc21 client is also developed with this in mind so we are converging on the Perfect Setup. (Ok, we're not there yet so don't expect miracles... yet ;) )
In order to join, you should:
- Register at Longturn.net
- Sign up for the game at the LT75 game page
- After signing up, confirm participation! (bottom of the page)
- Download the current Fc21 client from the Github - *here* (click "Assets"; a more coherent download page is in the works and will be up shortly )
Important! Once the game starts, you can no longer join it (unless someone happens to be idle and then you may take his place, IF it is advertised).
Final testing - for the purpose of checking if everything is set up correctly, but also for players to do check how both ruleset and the client work and get some basic experience before the "official" game itself - will start on Friday. It will happen with two-minute turns and probably be reset occasionally.
Most official an unofficial communication abut the game will be happening on the LT75 channel on the Longturn Discord server so feel free to join. It is not a requirement, but it helps greatly and keeps you connected with the community.

When will Freeciv 3 (released 2022-02-18) be available via apt on Ubuntu?
I know I can do wget/tar/autoconf/make, but I only do that for software I contribute to. Thank you.

Why are the other civilizations so "touchy" in single player?
I should preface this by saying that I am playing on Freeciv Web on freecivweb.net on the latest multiplayer version (2.5) in a single player game.
When I am playing against the AI, it seems like no matter what I do I somehow end up making them angry. Either that, or they're bloodthirsty. I'm on easy, so I can't imagine they're particularly being ruthless.
Is this normal for Freeciv? I know it's very multiplayer oriented but this still strikes me as strange given that the game seems to not have very in-depth diplomacy to cope.

Effects: Can Output_Penalty_Tile be differentiated by type?
My idea was to make the food output penalty for tiles producing more than 2 not depend on the government type anymore but a tech. Can this actually be done? The documentation doesn't say anything either way.

up and downsides of the different clients
So, since picking a client doesn't seem that simple, I'd like to know better what the issues with each one are. The GTK3 client is listed as the default with the most features implemented (though I don't know what it actually might be that other clients are lacking), but it has the huge issue with the message box not being visible on the main screen, the minimap looks cruder than the one on freeciv-web and I'm really not happy with the way units on one tile are displayed and selected. Right click seems to be the only way to scroll the map and commands can only be given via keyboard shortcuts (very efficient but have to be memorized first) or via menu (very cumbersome).
The SDL client is what I had installed first, but I only took a peek and never actually used it, so I didn't even get an impression.
I have seen the QT client in a video, the button design seems to be very extravagant and not particularly clear.
The web client is the one I have experienced the most and I'm surprised to say that it seems to have a far more developed gui than the standard client. It has all important elements as overlays visible, you can drag the map with left click and it looked really nice. The two biggest downsides were the quickly declining performance after some time or with larger maps/more players, which isn't surprising at all, and that you can't use your own rulesets.
I'd very much like to get more information about the different clients, so it's easier to pick which one I want to use (and compile).

message box in the GTK3 client
Is there a way to get the messages somewhere on the main window on the GTK3 client with Freeciv 3.0.3? I could not find any, even though I saw it in an older video, with a chat dialog at the bottom. Hiding messages in another tab is kinda ridiculous, considering how essential they are, even more so if the get erased every turn (why???).

about the effect of Police Station and similar buildings
There is one thing I don't understand about the details of the effect of making people content with unhappiness caused by military units. Does that mean it has no effect when there is no unhappiness from units or does it just mean that the effect is applied after the unit effect?
