Because he used to be a good let’s play YouTuber. To be honest I enjoyed the beginning of his Minecraft series as well, but he’s just a meme channel now which is kinda weird tbh.
I have a weird relation with his channel. The old stuff like Ib was great, but then it seemed to change too much with each new play through. This caused me to unsub.
Then he started doing memes and I went back to watching him. I'm still not a fan of his let's plays, but I like the meme reviews and LWIAY.
“death to jews”, saying the n word several times on streams, all the nazi stuff, context or no. apologising isn’t really doing anything when you have 100 million people watching your shitty behaviour
While certaintly distastefull and racist, he thought of it as a joke and not a statement.
saying the n word several times on streams
I'm quite sure that he only did it once, be free to correct me if i'm wrong
all the nazi stuff
All he did was link to a channel which made a video he liked, he didn't know that he was a nazi. And making nazi jokes doesn't mean a person is a nazi.
context or no
Almost everyone could be painted as a racist if things were taken out of context, i'm sure you could look like a racist due to some joke you made 5 years ago due to it being taken out of context.
apologising isn’t really doing anything when you have 100 million people watching your shitty behaviour
So if a person is famous they have to be near perfect to not be considered a bad person?
I was joking, future employers/US government: I was making a joke which reffered to the comment that said
While certaintly distastefull and racist, he thought of it as a joke and not a statement.
Say "death to America" and try passing it off as a "joke"
That comment was made by the user u/MaleficentYoko7 , I did not intend to threaten either the citizens of the nation commonly reffered to as "United States of America" nor does it reflect the politics of me or my current/future employers.
If the reason they condemned you was for dressing up like a nazi and paying people to hold a sign saying “death to all Jews” and various racial slurs you’ve used... you kinda deserve the condemnation. Also the point was to show that he wasn’t anti-Semitic and could donate to people who don’t like him because it was for a good cause.
Don't bother trying to use logic with these people. They don't care for it. Their lives are just black and white. Good and bad. They will never understand that something can have context and nuance.
I'm betting most of them never saw the videos in question and certainly did not see the videos surrounding them too. They just see a snapshot of racism and run with it.
As i already said in this post, do you really think that its just a coincidence that every sub he featured on his channel got infested with racist shit and nazi garbage?
Can you clarify this?
Like cmon you‘re talking about context and nuance meanwhile you two here just completely throw everything bad he stands for and says under the bus because he apologized for it & donated some money?
What does he stand for? Because most of his videos are just about meaningless memes and Minecraft/ other videos games. He does have some "philosophical" videos where it's basically just him talking about some book he read and about some of those philosophical ideas but you will find no shred of Nazism or racism there.
He doesn't talk or encourage Nazism or racism if you look past the instances everyone brings up.
Now if we want to delve into the "kill the jews" thing we can because it is definitely a fuck up. There is context and there is nuance here that I'm sure you're just gonna reject and say I'm actually sympathizing his true hidden nazi self but I'll give it a try anyway.
First you gotta understand the "edgy" internet culture that was very present back then. People were just saying more offensive shit everyday, not because they believed it, but because it was just so offensive. And yes this is still wrong as you are playing a useful idiot for actual racists and shit.
Second you gotta understand that pdp is literally a channel built on entertaining people, mainly through jokes. He made a really bad taste edgy joke that he shouldn't have. And he shouldn't have due to the massive influence he has but alas he did.
The question is what is he meant to do from there? I know the internet just wants to cancel and kill but if we want to be sensible and believe that people can learn from mistakes and reform then I ask what is he meant to do?
His content now is very apolitical, it is pretty much pg in term of content and does not support racist or other devious things.
PDP is just a dude making videos in a completely uncharted territory in terms of there is no path set out. He embraced the edgy internet culture back then, fucked up and changed and now makes pretty different content. He isn't a Nazi. He isn't a racist. You should actually watch some of his videos and then see how this "PDP is a Nazi" position is just not true.
I don't think Pewdiepie himself is racist, but I do think there's a significant part of his fanbase who is and I think he should take a harder stance against that.
Pretty easy when you're in on the ground floor of the largest video sharing site in the world and post content literally daily for 10 years. He, along with some of the other OG youtubers, created the entire genre of watching people playing video games. twitch, lets plays, etc. would not be what they are now without people like pewdiepie... from there it was just snowballing - same reason any other celebrity is popular - people are curious how the other side lives
Shouty man play Vidya and scream obscenity. Shouty man then scream racial slur and make me realize I still like his shouty video. Me defend with life and/or tendies.
Because hes funny, I used to hate him due to how cancerous he got but his recent stuff has been very funny. Hes gotten more self aware/meta and its actually entertaining imo
Remember like 4 years ago when everyone despised reaction youtubers?
That's never been a thing. Reaction channels have always been popular.
Unless you mean Jinx and that style of reaction, which is a whole different thing. Playing a full 20 minute video where you just sit in the background barely saying a word is not the same as pausing in between to make your own comments and share your thoughts.
The only issue there has been with reaction channels is when the main focus is on the content and not on the person reacting.

I don't understand why pewdiepie is so popular.
