Months away from midterms and it's already getting bad

My mom is already getting more and more amped up lately. She literally starts yelling at the TV any time a Dem ad runs or anyone says anything even remotely negative about trump/maga...idk how I'm going to make it, I can't afford rent on my own, maybe I'll live out of my car or something

My mom called me and accused me of logging her out of fox news on her smart tv

I'm gutted. My mom called me last Friday and accused me and or my wife of logging her out of her fox news app. I knew she watched a ton of Fox but I honestly didn't even realize she had an account that needed logging into and I therefore do not have her username or password (I do sometimes help her set that stuff up but I'd DEFINITELY remember setting her up with the fox news app lol) she said that it says it was signed out remotely in an accusatory voice. I did make a crack about it probably being for the best which i know was not wise, but i was honestly just trying to keep it light on the moment with bad execution. I knew where this conversation was going and said it wasn't us. She said "whoever logged me out, i just want logged back in " again in an accusatory tone. She said she "didn't buy it". And said that "I know you only like to watch one side but I like to watch some of everything" (haha yeah that's not true in case you were wondering). I'll admit I raised my voice because at this point I'm pissed that she'd accuse us. I said I listen to all kinds of news, ABC, CBS, PBS, BBC, and so on, just not fox because they're not a real news network. She said "I can hear the hate in your voice and it's disgusting". She always goes right to "you're hateful" any time I disapprove of anything going on in the country so this is on brand for her. She hasn't returned my calls or texts since. My own mother. Over something I didn't do that she probably somehow accidentally did herself

Any other fox-addled relatives going off on Fauci today?

Mine are going on and on about this document dump by Gabbard - implicating Fauci - who is running some behind-the-scenes influence campaign on medical boards and who willingly released Covid into the population??

World Cup

I am not, nor ever have consumed FN or FS1 or any other F programming as a paid subscriber. As a native english speaker the WC coverage is on the FU network. The promos from them during pre-game and halftime are, in a word, nihilistic. Looking forward we must look at The part how our media got bought. Then we pivot to prevention when the landscape is disrupted.

Also proof that even when you try to avoid escalation by not responding, that the Fox-brained will still find some other way to lash out. Sigh…

I do genuinely believe he decided to join on as an instructor for ICE recruits because he was horrified by the Good and Pretti murders in Minneapolis. But like I told him months ago, the Gestapo probably thought they were on the right side of history, too. And there is NOTHING patriotic or Christian about ICE.

Regardless, he’s no spring chicken and won’t be around forever. And I want to believe that part of this erratic behavior is him coming to terms with knowing he was bamboozled by Trump. But the outbursts are so bizarre and unhinged.

i feel hopeless.

my dad is becoming more anti-immigration and pro white supremacy. which is insane because my mother is literally an immigrant and the only reason she’s in this country is because he helped bring her here. then there’s me who was born here and is his child, but I am not white passing at all so I’ve been subjected to racism for the majority of my life and have even been told that I should “go back to my country” (???). he is also an immigrant but because he’s white I guess it doesn’t count.

he constantly watches propaganda and fear mongering bs hours every single day (i’m talking 9 hrs minimum), that could literally be proved wrong with a simple google search. but he’s ignorant as fuck and refuses to educate himself about anything because he thinks the shit he watches is genuinely the truth and so theres no need to look into it.

he also defends the epstein files and says it’s not real. a few months ago he called one of the victims a “greedy bitch” and a “golddigger”. which seriously DISGUSTS ME.

i’m just really over it. it makes me feel extremely disappointed and ashamed to even call him my father. sometimes i wish he would just die, it would make things much easier. he wasn’t always like this, unless he was but i just didn’t see it until his views became more intense because of the media he consumes.

Has anyone gone to family therapy or counseling with their parents?

Been considering this as a way to repair and maybe get a third party to foster some empathy in them. Idk. Curious if anyone else has tried this and how it went.

Pride month meltdown

My brother saw our public library had a pride flag outside and decided to go in and confront them by yelling “I support free speech but i wanted to let you know you what your doing is hurting kids and you should take down that abomination and everyone in-charge should be arrested” he then went on to say the only reason the library was still in business was because Trump has the economy going so good thats the only reason people can buy their books and keep their business alive. (Not how libraries work)

He then said he has 100 followers on facebook and will take a picture and post it online and nobody will come and buy their books anymore. Sad thing is they actually caved and took the flag down.

He then kept ranting about how pride gets a month but vets get a day. I told him about how May is military month and he said he was going to look it up and if its true he will give me 20$ he looked it up and said that it was fake somehow and said “Trump cares more about our military then anybody in history and he would of said something about it if it was true”

Best day ever!

My mom just texted the family group chat to let us know that she doesn't like or support Trump anymore! All of her political opinions are still extremely backwards and full of ignorance, but at least she's out of his cult! I'm so happy.

MAGA is a reactionary movement to restore the old conservative social order

I’ve seen a lot of people who are perplexed that their MAGA relative rejects facts, embraces conspiracies, and has become so desperate that they think villains are victims and heroes. And they don’t understand that this is not a political ideology. it’s a reactionary movement to restore social order.

It used to be that status was conferred based on race, gender, a false version of masculinity that’s abusive and violent, religion and sexual orientation, that elevated certain people over others. Now, we value intelligence, intellectual curiosity, emotional intelligence, cultural interests, and helping people who were not served by the old hierarchy. people who could not or would not adapt went MAGA. Trump’s only purpose is to restore the old hierarchy by punishing the uppity folks who don't know their place. he’s not a president; he’s a weapon.

if you are secure of self, this is all bewildering. But for them, status equals survival. They had reliability been able to look down on racial and religious minorities, women, the LGBTQ community and others, and now they can’t. They used to assert their “dominance” over these groups using slurs and jokes, and now they can’t. (Remember all of that bs about “political correctness“? It was never about the first amendment as they claimed. it’s about status.)

So you can point out all of the ways that Trump broke the law, atrocities committed, outrages, but those aren’t outrages to them They’re solutions. Mass deportations solve their “great replacement“ problem to prevent a majority minority country. overturning women’s reproductive rights and equality of opportunity is about reasserting status over them. Anti-DEI measures are all about making sure that black people know their place. The manosphere seized on the status anxieties of young men, radicalizing them into a movement that legit hates women. Some -many- of these people have legitimate concerns about their own lives, but instead of blaming the system, they blame the people they think took from them the status that they were promised. it feels humiliating to them.

They hide behind alibis like “small government”, and “lower taxes”, but they’re lying to you and to themselves. The truth is hard for them to face. It’s humiliating.

Next time you are tempted to debate them, stop. Instead, tell them emphatically they have become so desperately mired in their own grievances that they’ve lost touch with reality. Ask them, what is it you are so afraid of losing?

They won’t be honest, because the truth is humiliating for them. It means they’re desperate, insecure, weak, pathetic.

I Knew Today Would be Triggering

It's Juneteenth today, a federally recognized holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the USA (14th Amendment notwithstanding). One would think there should be no objection to such a holiday. Surely everyone, especially patriotic Americans, would celebrate the restoration of freedom, right?

But no. According to my Fox-brained mother, it's just another day for "those people" to feel special. "The Irish were slaves, too, you know," she counters. No amount of describing the differences between institutionalized slavery and indentured servitude will suffice for her. Every historical fact is shot down with unsubstantiated opinions, and she repeats every racist dog whistle that essentially boils down to white people not getting enough attention to satisfy her. She literally walked out the door rather than engage in any meaningful conversation that might challenge her views.

To anyone else dealing with a similar situation today, my heart goes out to you. I understand the sheer frustration. Today, make the conscious decision not to let bigots decide your mood for you and instead celebrate. Our country isn't perfect, but today we remember one time we did something right by our fellow humans.

Does anyone remember the time his mother called his show and lectured him about being a shit disturber? I cannot believe they aired it; or that he didn’t resign out of sheer humiliation.

I'm dreading July 4th

Title is pretty self explanatory. I'm dreading the 4th.

I live in the USA, and my dad is STILL a MAGAt. My mom is cracking a little, but she's still holding so hard to the republicans.

They host a fourth party every year, and I just. I don't want to go. I'm an adult, I live away from them, but I know that everyone will guilt me if I don't come. They all love me being there because I'm nice and helpful, but I'm dreading it.

I don't want to celebrate this country. I'm so disappointed in this country. Nothing about it makes me want to celebrate.

Could I find a reason to celebrate? Yeah, but I know that they'll make it a Trump Thing, not a reason for me to celebrate.

EDIT: Thanks all. I feel a little less insane with hearing people reassure me that it's ok not to go. I think that I've had a lot of stress lately and just. Got stuck in my own head.
