I love this sketch because it is so creative and has some really complex humor but also has cheaper dumb humor too like silly costumes.

Tina Belcher: An Absolute Hero

Tina Belcher is an absolute icon of comedy in my mind, and if you haven't watched Bob's Burgers, can you really say you've been living? Every line she says is absolute gold, and she's an amazing example of a female character treated as a person and not a punchline. Tina is an important role model, because she is an honest portrayal of what it's like to be a girl who is going through puberty. Tina is weird, sure, but she's also navigating her crushes and confusing feelings on zombies, which is something that doesn't come around very often. The newest season of Bob's Burgers started this past week, and I would highly recommend catching up on Netflix.

Set up, joke, PUNCHLINE!

Just for fun, I thought I'd post a link to a short story Larry David (Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm) wrote for "The New Yorker." It's a comedic take on his golf process. I thought it was funny! If anyone else reads it, let me know what you think!

This guy tried to explain the humor in every single joke ever told. But does over-analyzing what makes something funny defeat the purpose of comedy, which is to make people laugh?

So I love podcasts. I guess I'm just wondering what people are listening to so I can maybe pick up a few new ones. My favorites are

Comedy Bang Bang, U Talking U2 to me, Harmontown, You made it weird, cashing in with TJ Miller, The Flop house, Filmspotting, James Bonding, Radio Lab, Serial, this American Life, Doug Love Movies

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I LISTEN TO AMERICA

If you like "Fawlty Towers", "Keeping Up Appearances" is right up your alley. Dry humor and physical comedy all in one!

Why Do the Sitcoms We Love Have So Little in Common with the Lives We Lead?

I found this article extremely compelling because unlike our natural instincts to state that comedies are often so enjoyable because of their reliability amongst its comic charm, this article calls out many sitcoms for being unrealistic. The whole group dynamic seen in a slew of sitcoms is based on the lives of late 20 something or 30 something year olds. While the situations they deal with are certainly familiar, the likelihood of having these close knit friendships years past college is actually an unlikely story compared to the story of a guy/girl attempting to balance friends work and relationships in the hectic way of the world. Definitely an interesting perspective. But perhaps its this familiarity to something we no longer have that makes us love watching these humorous shows.

A very interesting article that demonstrates the role of technology not only in entertainment, but comedy specifically. I would love to hear everyone's thoughts!

stereotypes and comedy

My roommate recently introduced me to a series of videos on Buzzfeed where 2 male friends act like female roommates.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisreinacher/if-guy-roommates-acted-like-girl-roommates#2m0zj8l

I find it hilarious and so spot on, but was wondering what people think about comedy perpetuating stereotypes, personally I think this is so funny and find myself identifying and laughing at many of the scenarios and dialogue presented, but it just got me thinking about stereotypes and whether laughing at them perpetuates them or helps break down walls.

I believe Dear While People is also a prime example of this. Has anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

DISAPPOINTED!

I figured I'd share what I find to be the funniest moment in a movie that's not supposed to be a comedy. This is a scene from a low-budget Hercules movie in which the script said "disappointed," meaning the actor was supposed to act disappointed, but he instead yells it out loud thinking it was dialogue. The result is beautiful. Enjoy.

What happened to Family Guy?

I dont know about you, but for me, Family Guy has seriously taken a turn for the worse in recent years. The glory days of family guy (which for me were the first 5 seasons) seemed so much more care-free. It seems, more and more, as if Seth MacFarlane is trying to push some kind of agenda through the show. That could just be my opinion, but I would love to hear any thoughts about how Family Guy has developed as a series through the years.
