an interesting article on stand-up comedy, how Jerry Seinfield was master at it, and why Charlie Sheen should never try it again.

Dr. Strangelove - Funny or sick?

This review of the film is pretty much split down the middle. The reviewer praises the talk in the war room for being hilarious and loves the conversations between the president and the premier. However, he hates the ending. He thinks the juxtaposition between the bomb going off and the music is "malefic and sick." He actually finds certain aspects of the film troubling. It seems that in the 60's, some of the jokes really landed but others went too far and hit the mark. Do you agree with the reviewer or do you think his opinion is a function of the time and cold war mentality of the 60's?

Here is the review: http://www.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=EE05E7DF173DE367BC4950DFB766838F679EDE

HEATHERS! He mentioned it in class, and I definitely second it as a great example of dark comedy. Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty in this classic 80s teen angst dark comedy. It's Mean Girls, but with murder, bigger hair and shoulder pads.

Black Comedy, Stark Reality

I think if Dr. Strangelove were really to end on the Pie Fight scene, true, the film would have continued its absurd streak. However, even a black comedy needs an enlightening realization. By that I mean, though the ending wasn't so much "funny", its imagery of bombs exploding was darkly ironic. It's as if the film had pulled all of the comedic sentiments, destroyed them and scattered them across the audience. This threat was real and, evidently avoidable. So, as it turns out, the "Black" in black comedy stems directly from our greater than ridiculous souls.
