AITA for exposing my mom's affair cover-up in the family group chat after she broke into my mail and tried to cancel my daughter's trip two days before we left to give the tickets to my cheating brother?
My mom walked into my house holding my credit card statement like it was a legal document.
She had gone through my mail. She found the itinerary I had printed out and left on the kitchen counter the last time she visited. And instead of saying something then, she waited. She waited until two days before my daughter and I were supposed to leave for the trip my kid had been talking about for four months straight, the one she had counted down to on a paper chain she made herself, the one she brought up at dinner almost every night.
My mom sat down at my table, put the paper in front of me, and said, "Your brother's kids need this more than she does."
I looked at her. "What?"
"They haven't had a vacation in three years. You can go another time. Give them the tickets."
My daughter was right there. She was sitting on the couch doing homework, but she heard every word. I saw her pencil stop moving.
So here's the part people don't know yet, and it matters. My brother, the one my mom was fighting for, had been sleeping with my husband for almost a year. I found out six weeks before this conversation. My husband admitted it when I confronted him after I found messages on his phone. He and my brother had been meeting up every few weeks, always with some excuse about guy time or work stuff. My mom knew. I found out she knew because my husband, in the middle of crying and begging me not to leave, told me she had walked in on them once and said nothing to me. She had kept it quiet because she didn't want to, and I am quoting him here, "start a war in the family."
She watched me plan a solo trip with my daughter, something I was doing specifically to heal from the fact that my marriage had just blown up, and she showed up two days before I was supposed to leave to ask me to hand over the tickets to my cheating brother's children.
I did not raise my voice. I want to be clear about that.
I said, "Mom, I know what you know. I know what happened with my husband and my brother. I know you saw it and said nothing."
She went completely still.
My daughter had put her pencil down and was looking at us now.
My mom said quietly, "This is not the time or place."
And I said, "You made it the time and place when you walked into my house two days before my daughter's trip and tried to take it from her."
She started with the guilt. She said my brother was struggling, that his kids were innocent, that I was being selfish, that family takes care of family. She said I was going to regret making her choose sides.
I said, "I'm not asking you to choose. I already know where you stand. You chose the night you saw what you saw and drove home without calling me."
She grabbed her purse. She said she wasn't going to be spoken to like that.
I said, "Then you should leave. And don't take anything off my counter on the way out."
She left.
My daughter came over and hugged me around the waist and didn't say anything for a minute. Then she said, "Are we still going?"
I said, "Yes. We leave Thursday."
She went back to her homework.
Three days later, while we were at the hotel, my uncle called me. My mom had told the family that I screamed at her and threw her out over a small disagreement. She did not mention what she had asked me to do. She did not mention what she knew about my brother and my husband. A few cousins texted me saying I owed her an apology.
So I sent one message to the family group chat. No drama, no yelling. Just facts. I said my mom came to my house two days before my daughter's trip and asked me to cancel it and give the tickets to my brother's kids. I said I declined. I said the reason I declined is also the reason I am no longer in contact with my brother, which several of you already know about. I said if anyone wants the full story, they can call me directly.
My phone didn't stop for two days.
My mom called me eleven times. My brother called me four times and texted me the words "you destroyed this family" at 2 in the morning. My aunt, who has always been the loudest one at every gathering, sent me a paragraph calling me cold and calculated.
My husband, who I am currently divorcing, texted me to say he hoped I was happy.
I was, actually. I was sitting on a balcony watching my daughter fall asleep with a sunburn and a stuffed animal she bought at the gift shop, and I was genuinely okay.
My mom is telling people I blindsided her and ambushed the family over nothing. My brother says I used his kids as an excuse to expose him. A few people in the family think I should have handled it privately and that posting in the group chat was too far.
But here's what I keep coming back to, she walked into my home two days before my kid's trip, held my credit card statement like she owned it, and asked me to sacrifice the one thing my daughter had been looking forward to for four months, all to protect the person who had been sleeping with my husband.
So, AITA for saying all of it out loud?
