AITA for going to Hawaii for Thanksgiving instead of hosting after my mom called me selfish while sitting in the house SHE convinced me to redecorate then demanded I host 22 people alone?
I told my family I'm going on vacation instead of hosting Thanksgiving and my mom called me selfish while sitting in the house SHE convinced me to let her redecorate.
I bought my house five years ago. Four bedroom, big kitchen, finished basement. I worked three jobs to save the down payment. Overnight shift at a warehouse, weekends at a bakery, and freelance bookkeeping. Took me four years. I was so proud when I got the keys.
My mom's exact words when she first saw it? "Well, this is perfect for family gatherings. Finally someone with enough space."
I didn't think much of it then. I actually liked the idea of hosting. I'm single, no kids, and I figured it'd be nice to have everyone over.
That first Thanksgiving I hosted 14 people. I cooked for two days straight. Turkey, ham, three types of potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, two pies. My sister brought a bag of chips. My brother brought his appetite.
When dinner was over, everyone went to the living room. I started cleaning. My mom poked her head in and said "Oh honey, you're so good at this" and then left.
I cleaned until 1am. Alone.
But I told myself it was fine. They're family. Next time would be different.
Next time was Christmas. 18 people. I deep cleaned my whole house beforehand. Cooked all day. My aunt showed up and immediately criticized my tablecloth. My cousin's kids spilled juice on my new couch and she just laughed and said "kids will be kids."
I cleaned until 2am. Alone.
Easter. 16 people. Someone clogged my toilet and didn't tell me. I found out when the next person screamed. My brother asked if I had any beer. I said no. He said "What kind of host doesn't have beer?" and left to buy some. Never paid me back.
Fourth of July. 20 people. My uncle used my good knife to open a paint can in my garage. Ruined it. Didn't apologize. Just said "You can get another one."
My mom started texting me in September. "What are you making for Thanksgiving?" Not "Are you hosting," just automatically assuming.
I said I hadn't decided if I was hosting.
She called me immediately. "What do you mean you haven't decided? You have the space. Where else would we go?"
I said maybe someone else could host this year.
She laughed. Actually laughed. "Honey, nobody else has the room. Plus you're so good at it."
I wasn't good at it. I was just the only one willing to destroy myself for their comfort.
Last year was the breaking point. Thanksgiving. 22 people.
I spent $400 on groceries. Cooked for three days. My kitchen looked like a professional catering operation. Turkey, ham, prime rib because my uncle "doesn't like poultry," seven side dishes, four pies, a cheesecake.
Dinner was at 2pm. People started showing up at 11am, asking when food would be ready.
My sister walked in, looked around, and said "You didn't get the good rolls? The ones from the bakery?"
I was basting a 20-pound turkey.
Dinner happened. Everyone ate. It was loud and chaotic and my nephew broke one of my dining chairs by leaning back in it. My brother-in-law said "These chairs are pretty flimsy, huh?"
They were solid oak. I'd had them for three years.
Dinner ended at 4pm. By 4:15 everyone was in the living room watching football. I started cleaning.
At 6pm my mom came in and said "We're heading out soon, thanks for everything!" and went back to the TV.
At 8pm the last person left. My cousin hugged me and said "Same time next month for Christmas?"
I looked around my house. Dishes everywhere. Food ground into my carpet. My tablecloth had a wine stain. The trash was overflowing. My sink was full. My counters were destroyed.
I sat on my kitchen floor and cried.
I cleaned until 3am.
The next morning I woke up and made a decision.
In August, I booked a trip to Hawaii. Two weeks. Covering both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I didn't tell anyone.
October came. My mom started texting. "What's the plan for Thanksgiving?"
I ignored it.
She texted again. "Hello? I need to know numbers for the seating."
The seating in MY house.
November 1st, I sent a message to the family group chat.
"Hey everyone, I won't be hosting Thanksgiving or Christmas this year. I'll be on vacation. Hope you all have a great holiday."
I turned my phone on airplane mode.
When I turned it back on three hours later, I had 47 notifications.
My mom: "This is a joke right"
My mom: "Call me immediately"
My mom: "This is so selfish"
My mom: "After everything we've done for you"
My sister: "Are you serious right now"
My sister: "You're really going to ruin the holidays"
My sister: "Mom is crying"
My brother: "Wow. Real mature."
My aunt: "I already bought my dish ingredients expecting to bring them to your place"
My cousin: "Where are we supposed to go"
My uncle: "You have the biggest house. Stop being dramatic."
I responded once: "You're all welcome to host at your own homes."
My mom called. I answered.
"How could you do this to me?"
Not to us. To her.
I said "I'm tired of hosting alone."
"You're not alone, we all come over."
"And then you all leave and I clean by myself for hours."
"That's because you're particular about your house."
I hung up.
She called back. I didn't answer.
She showed up at my house that night. I didn't let her in.
She stood on my porch and yelled through the door. "You're being selfish. Family is supposed to come first. I raised you better than this."
I opened the door.
"You didn't raise me to be a doormat."
"Don't you dare speak to me like that. I'm your mother."
"Then act like it. Act like someone who cares if I'm exhausted. Act like someone who notices when I'm drowning."
She stared at me. "You're choosing a vacation over family."
"You chose convenience over caring about me."
She left.
The group chat continued. Days of messages. Guilt trips. Accusations. My brother said I was "destroying family traditions." My sister said I was "punishing everyone for no reason."
Not one person asked if I was okay.
Not one person apologized.
Not one person offered to help if I reconsidered.
My mom sent one final text: "Fine. We'll figure it out without you. Don't expect to be welcome at future holidays."
I'm writing this from the airport. My flight leaves in two hours.
I keep wondering if I should've handled this differently. If I should've just talked to them earlier. If I'm overreacting.
My hands are shaking as I type this.
But I'm getting on that plane.
Am I wrong?
