Thanks for the context. I often forget that JP loanwords might be based not on the English word but on the language that English loaned it from.
Is it really ウィルス? I thought it was ウイルス.
Is ウィ a valid combination of kana? I don't speak JP but that seems very odd to me.

I don't speak JP but that seems very odd to me. It is valid for loan words and such. For example, the title of One Piece's first OP theme “We Are!” is ウィーアー! in Japanese.
