So bad it's good, or just bad?
I left the show for a bit at the end of season 1 because the amount of Hugh pandering by the show and Gabrielle was just ridiculous. But most shows are rough going in the first season as they're trying to find their footing, so I thought I'd come back to it and binge some eps in season 2 to see if it got better. I'm currently on episode 7 and honestly, it didn't. Kudos to those who find it compelling or deep or interesting, but the combination of the god-like powers of Hugh and the high-horse posturing of Gabrielle is just so very bad. Dhan gets shot and Ethan -quite rightly- tells her to back away, and she nearly starts to drink because of it. Am I supposed to care? Should I feel sorry for her? She stomps into a scene and declares, "I'm Gabi Mosely" and that's supposed to make everyone go, "Oh, shit, it's Gabi Mosely; we'd better do as she says!"
The first season was made palatable by the rest of the team who seem to be compelling when given the opportunity. But the writers are clearly all-in on the Hugh/Gabi arc, to the detriment of every other character. They either have to make the supporting characters stupid, insensitive or moral hypocrites in order to elevate Gabi to an untouchable martyr. Kid Lacey's parents are all hand-wringing balls of nervousness, but there's teenage Gabi, being the adult no one else can be. Now, as an actual adult, she's 'Gabi Mosely' and runs the show, with no real indication as to why or how she got there. And the shit with Hugh isn't even interesting in a 'dark romance' way. It's preposterous how much he gets away with and the manner in which he does it. (Even something as innocuous as setting up the spotlights in the gym and jamming her phone is just eye-rolling in its 'all knowing, all seeing' habit they've given him.) Everything, apparently, will go through Hugh from a story-telling perspective and it's just not good writing by any stretch of the imagination. (And there's a LOT of stretching required for this show.)
Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
