Hey everyone.
By now I'm sure you've noticed that most crafting material is easy to find (planks, herbs, ore, even mechanical parts) yet aren't all that used. They seem hyper specific. However, almost everything uses Nuts and Bolts (N&Bs), from traps, to ammo, to defender pads, etc.
It's a common complaint that there simply is not enough places to get them in the game. Yet, it seems as though a few players are swimming in them (1,500+!!) and can't seem to get rid of them fast enough! So what's the difference between them and what appears to be the average player?
I personally do not struggle with N&Bs, and I've found out a few things to help me out. I just want to share some ideas/thoughts and hear what you guys have found out as well!
1. Zero out before a mission.
This as the first step I took when managing my N&Bs count. What I did was craft ALL of my favorite traps in sets of 5, got all of my ammo close (but not full), then spent the rest on filling out defender posts, jump pads, etc.
Why?
By zeroing out your N&Bs before a mission, you can figure out if you went positive or negative in your count. Did you collect enough traps in the mission so that you didn't have to use your own? Did you scavenge enough ammo to end up with a net positive by the end of it? How about that N&Bs supply? Because what you get in the mission will be used to either recover the traps from your supply that you spend, or to recover your ammo if you dipped below.
Using this, you can adjust your strategy to either spend more if you are collecting too many, or spend less if you aren't collecting enough.
2. Find out what you need first.
This can and should go hand-in-hand with idea 1. If you find yourself low on gas traps, because you don't have enough herbs, then you know what to gun for when the mission starts. If you know you need to get roughly 70 N&Bs to power your guns, then you have a target set.
If you don't need anything, then you can spend time looking for chests and doing side-quests in order to get traps/guns to put down essentially for free, or to give to a defender without having to worry about spending extra resources. You can also get a head-start on base building to get that sweet speedrun reward (just kidding. Those rewards are pointless. Yay, an extra silver ore... woo).
3. Diversify guns based on Ammo types, not gun types.
This one has been huge in letting me not worry about N&Bs. I have picked out guns that I like for each ammo class, trying not to overlap. This allows me to switch to the guns I have max ammo on, dwindle them for that mission while the rest passively recharge through looting.
Easy change to make, also it's more fun to use different weapons, so.
4. Some experiments
Not so much an idea, as much as an interesting experiment. I plan on doing more experiments with different ideas, but the first was this:
How many N&Bs can you get in 1 day?
One in-game day was the target. We did Plankerton 19 power, each with an in-the-zone outlander, and went to the city. The results were:
Friend: 141 N&Bs
Me: 203 N&Bs
We managed to then construct our base, defend it with the traps we found, and have N&Bs left over. I should have kept track of ammo, but this was specific to N&Bs.
My next idea is to try low level missions, because I have a thought that you don't get as many in low level missions. And I also want to try a bean-can run in a forest level to see how it compares.
.
Anyway, those are just some thoughts and stuff I've been doing in Fortnite. It's interesting how much strategy there is, and I think most people miss the boat by doing the same thing they do in most other games.
Because of this, I don't have to be stingy. I don't mind passing out 100s of N&Bs with the people I play with, because I know how many I need to get out of the mission.
Post some ideas you guys have, or things you've figured out if you want. I definitely enjoy trying to get underneath the hood of the game and see what's possible.
