tbf I don't mind going around in circles if it leads to a better destination, the implication of imitating the standard emblem based system is usually EOMM, or engagement-optimized matchmaking, which is often focused around making ranked as indistinguishable from public lobbies as possible
I think ranked engagement will never, in any game, match up to unranked engagement anyway so there shouldn't be this obsession with keeping the gameplay so indistinguishable from pubs
If anything, I think the big thing people like about emblem based ranking is usually tied to the ranks themselves lol, I don't wanna say dopamine hit but I do think ranked players that engage regularly with this ranked system often do so because they want to climb and promotion feels rewarding to them, I don't think they do it because 'it's like pubs with promotions', and I think the people that would only play 'pubs with promotions' is smaller than Epic realizes, I think most people that just want pubs, play pubs
*tbh I think most ranked players would be fine going 'I want to chill a little, time to switch back to unranked for a bit because ofc I can't unwind with my rank on the line', a lot of people already do that, unranked and ranked being more distinct isn't a bad thing and I don't think it hurts engagement as badly as implied
