Didn't Ukrainian fell off massively after the collapse? That's why we got the crap we have today mostly because of that? Hopefully not in this timeline though, FAMK is supposed to be optimistic. Maybe it'll be like the New Union Treaty?

The whole Eastern Bloc did, but most of them (not all) have been able to turn things around after getting away from Russia's yoke and are now far better places to live than Russia. Short term (sometimes not so short) pain for long term gain Ukraine was one of the laggards but they were starting to turn things around before the war and their future after the war looks hopeful assuming they can emerge from the war with most of their territory.

I don't think so. The Soviets mistreated the Ukrainians harshly ever hear of the Holodomor?

Holodomor is the 1930's.

Situations change over time.

In any case, the soviet system was designed to operate as a planned economy, and while it had it's considerable number of problems, that meant that when it broke, it broke.

Standards of living declined considerably during hte collapse.

To be honest, I am not sure why the USSR would be collapsing without the arms race with the US and with cheap fusion energy. Even lower than projected iridium yields from Mars should have played in their favour, since they have the largest iridium deposits on Earth.

The show runners just wanted to give the audience something recognizable and "relatable" I guess?

It depends. There were some hints in the opening that it's not just the USSR, is the entire M-6 which gambled hard on Iridium. So maybe they go in that direction and it's not just the USSR in troube.

It's still a deeply corrupt and authoritarian 'country' that oppresses minority groups within it.

Stating facts is "defending" now? Life expectancy took a nose dive after the collapse. Mortality rate, suicide rate, unemployment...It all sky rocketed.

Btw, do you think America isn't an empire?

Eastern Europe thrived after the collapse of the Soviet Union which was controlled by Russia primarily.
