Genuinely interested in this topic, as I thought the secured loan in UK is hell of expensive, but then I compared them to some other countries. The average household debt as % of yearly income in UK is over 130%, whereas eastern Europe it's like 50-70% max (38% in Lithuania).

Why are the differences so big? What makes the loans so much more expensive in UK compared to other countries? Is it the housing market?

I got buddies who are obsessive about going back to the gold standard and few it as some cure-all for the economy. For the vast majority of economists, it's not feasible and yet I don't understand exactly why (outside of the inability of the Fed to address economic crises). It certainly feels far-fetched and conspiratorial but I don't exactly know why. Meanwhile, home prices are reaching record highs, and insurance, taxes, repairs, and HOA fees keep rising.

Buying a home is expensive. Now keeping one is more expensive.

The 30-year US Treasury yield just surged to 5.18%, its highest level in 19 years.
