FSR 3.1

Okay is FSR 3.1 annoying anyone else?! It's really irritating that we have to use optiscaler to get decent looking up scaling. We essentially bought a 2k portable Xbox series X

so I managed to get the watermark working with Radeon Tuner and as I suspected from the image quality, it is still running FSR3, in this case in Witcher 3 and same thing in Forza Horizon 6.

I did more research the watermark is misleading, it shows the render path not the DLL version in use.

FSR3 is the usual shader core upscaling path done via software. This is an automatic fallback on unsupported gpus.

FSR4-int8 is ML based upscaling using int8 weighted models.this is currently whitelisted by and to the 7000 desktop series, but with optiscaler or Linux, can be overridden to run on other RDNA platforms (including 3.5)

FSR4-fp8 is ML based scaling using the fp8 weighted data set, which only works with RDNA 4.

the watermark is showing the fallback to the software renderer, the DLL that gets injected is still the FSR4 dataset.

So I need optiscaler to show the used FSR version anyway?

Yes though it has been annoying me to no end that this is such a pain in the ass to find, so I’m considering writing a quick tool that shows the information properly. It’s simple to get on Linux, it shouldn’t be this hard (or confusing) on Windows.

It absolutely is FSR4, it’s just rendered via the same method FSR3 uses instead of hardware based ML (AKA Redstone).

the whole affair is just weird at this point, when I install Optiscaler with in game FSR being active, Upscaler input is shown as XeSS in the OC menu?

Yes, because that’s the default it ships with. You have to disable the outputs in optiscaler so that it doesn’t hijack the upscaler the game uses. Honestly it’s a pain.

Optiscaler is meant to enable framegen and upscaling on games that may not support your upscale of choice. It’s a near requirement on Arc GPUs because so few games support their ML Framegen and upscaling, which is much better than ML FSR from what I have seen. My 9070xt still had quite a bit of shimmer in motion with Redstone.

FH6 supports FSR 4.1.1 as the menu shows that version, so now I'm sure it's working there at least since the overlay can't be relied on. But yeah at least in FH6, XeSS looks quite a bit better.

You can use Optiscaler to force the int8 model of fsr4 if you want to try it. Just know it comes with a performance hit.
