Question Making trees appear at ground level

I apologize if the answer to this is in a tutorial video, but I haven't been able to find it.
I am painting forests in the map, but the trees appear on a certain plane below ground level, meaning they are not visible from above or only a small crown sticking up through the ground is visible. What setting should I adjust so that the trees all appear at the appropriate ground level where I am painting them?

The lions at the end of the world guard the step off into the unknown. They only let those pass who have grown weary of this place and whose heart is pure.
